Yahoo! Sports: Auburn Under NCAA Investigation

Pat Forde at Yahoo! Sports is reporting today that Auburn’s football program is under NCAA investigation. Forde writes, “According to multiple sources, NCAA investigators have been working for weeks on potential improprieties involving Auburn recruits, players, coaches, representatives of the school’s athletic interests and third parties. Assistant coaches Trooper Taylor and Curtis Luper have been scrutinized by the NCAA, sources said. Taylor is the assistant head coach and wide receivers coach, while Luper coaches running backs and is the recruiting coordinator.”

Numerous reports say that NCAA officials were on campus this week talking with coaches and players.

When asked to comment on today’s report, Chizik said, “I’m not going to comment on any speculation out there. I will talk about the Iron Bowl and Alabama.”

Taylor and Luper have been pulled from recruiting activities for most of the season. In recent weeks they’ve been seen on the sidelines at Auburn High School football games where both of their sons star.

This story only adds fuel to the fire over speculation that both athletic director Jay Jacobs and coach Gene Chizik will be released following Saturday’s Iron Bowl.

So far, Auburn officials have declined to comment. NCAA spokeswoman Stacey Osburn told Yahoo! Sports Wednesday that she cannot comment on current, pending or potential investigations.

Chizik has been asked about the status of Taylor and Luper on several occasions, most recently last month.

“I don’t have time for all of that,” Chizik said on October 30th. “I’ve got one direct focus: that is my team and my players. That has nothing to do with us winning. Whoever said that has nothing to do with anything, so I am not getting into any of that stuff. I’ve got one track, and that is our players and our coaches, and trying to get us to the next win, so, all of that stuff, I have no comment on that.”

He insists today’s news is not a distraction. “It’s not a distraction to me,” he said. “We haven’t thought one second about it. We’re right down the line on the Iron Bowl.”

Auburn heads into Saturday’s contest with Alabama a 34-point underdog.

    Will the cloud ever leave?

  2. ATL_AU_FAN says:

I have had enough of this. If these NCAA investigations are accurate then two things are obvious. We need a new AD and a new HC and, also if true, we should forget any buyout predicated on these investigations.
Im also for throwing TJ to the curb.
This is one TUF and Auburn Fund donor and season ticket holder who is finished is the BOT and Gouge don’t take some action. And the quicker the better – is there someone who will coach AU worse in the Iron Bowl??

  3. ATL_AU_FAN says:

And now being reported by Charles Goldberg at AL.com saying the NCAA has interviewed at least one assistant coach and several players this week.
I’m guessing there will be more to this than we care to hear…
    Damn. Just damn.

  4. Jonathon Jonathon says:

This hasn’t caught me off guard. I was privvy to some of this prior to today’s Yahoo! report – as probably plenty of other folks as well.

What has caught me off guard is a 3-9 season, losing to every single SEC opponent in effortless fashion from top to bottom. And the fact that we STILL DON”T KNOW WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN WITH CHIZIK AND JACOBS!!!

Coaches have done far less that what’s transpired this season on the Plains and have been fired much earlier.

For this, I’m not Thankful For on this Thanksgiving stretch.

  5. uglyjoe says:

Isn’t there a contract clause that allows Auburn to fire Chizik without paying the buyout in the case of an NCAA penalty. Could this be the reason nothing is happening?

    • Jay Coulter Jay Coulter says:

I had that same thought. Most contracts have that clause in them.

      • uglyjoe says:

I can see a scenario where Auburn knows they are going to go down and negotiates with Chizik to resign without the buyout or with a greatly reduced buyout. Chizik gets to save some face, the University gets to save some face from firing the National Championship coach, and Luper and Trooper are the scapegoats. Haven’t figured out where JJ fits into that scenario…..

  6. restless6 says:

The fat lady is singing. Bad times are coming and I want the guilty to pay dearly. That includes those who had knowledge of the cheating.

It’s time to flush the entire football staff, JJ, Dr. Goob, and any boosters and BOT folks who are complicit.

  7. AETiger AETiger says:

Gosh almighty. When does sh*t end? WTF!!!!!!!!

  8. chief says:

What more does President Gouge need to clean house? My idea of housecleaning includes removing Jay Jacobs, Coacxh Chizik and Pat Dye’s office and access from the athletic complex.

  9. Malakai Malakai says:

Told my girl what was happening. Her words, ” but, but we suck! DOES NOT COMPUTE!” I had the same feeling. Hansas State, Oregon, now this?! It’s like Christmas came early for Bama fans.

  10. KungFuPanda9 KungFuPanda9 says:

Just let the investigation run its course. Do not assume there was any wrongdoing by Auburn people. The NCAA has to check us out based on the “confession” by the school counselor involved.

……Looks like a well-timed holiday s-storm someone’s cooked up. I’d caution everyone to note that there are really no new facts in this story. We knew that the Jovon Robinson situation was being investigated months ago. The administration staved off the Cam mess two years ago. We’ll hope this one goes similarly.

  12. SandMountainTiger SandMountainTiger says:

I thought we already knew about this Robinson crap. Isn’t that why he’s not here? Also, this is the same scumbag that hounded us about the whole Cam/Miss St. junk. Piss on Matt Forde and everybody that looks like Matt Forde. I notice none of the other outlets are jumping on this.

  13. rn4au rn4au says:

Honestly, I’m done even worrying about it anymore… if we don’t get rid of the problem all the way up the ladder then we might as well get ready to see this happen again. Add me to the list totally fed up fans who want to see heads roll.

  14. plains74 says:

I plan on going to football games some where. If we do not have a house cleaning after all this, I am done with season tickets priority or not! It then is a matter of season tickets to the Falcons or the Titans! I have four Auburn Bammer tickets sitting on my desk that I can’t give away to any of my Auburn friends. I am sure not giving or selling them to any Bammers so I guess they will just have to sit on my desk! If I thought there was any chance of being a contest I would take my son and grandson and go! There just is no excuse for this. How did we get here, when we had everything going for us two years ago!

  15. Randyc37 Randyc37 says:

I am thankful that I took that fork in the road years ago and decided to spend a weekend in Auburn to tour the campus. I never thought that I would go to Auburn since I was an Alabama fan when I was growing up. I felt at home the first time that I stepped on campus and Auburn has been a part of my life since 1972.

Thanks to the great writers on this site. I always look forward to your articles and I would like to think that our voices are being heard by the Auburn decision makers.

Happy Thanksgiving and may Auburn find some way to upset Alabama this year!

  16. KoolBell KoolBell says:

Hey guys and gals, these same stories we are hearing now, are coming from the same sources that we heard from in the whole Cam scenario. My bet is that this is much ado about nothing.

This centers around the Jovon Robinson grade changing. It only makes sense that they look at AU since, you know, Robinson chose to play at AU. It’s merely an investigation, not an accusation. I don’t know if any of this is true or not, and since AU practiced due diligence with the Newton investigation, I’ll lay odds they are doing the same again.

Try not to panick, and don’t let any of this rile you up, it is not worth it. If by some chance there is some wrong doing, then those heads will roll, I can gaurantee that! Jay Jacobs and the AU compliance staff have kept things very tidy around Auburn, so let it play out.

  17. Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

After reading the article, it doesn’t look like anything new. Honestly. This seems like a high school issue.

Be that as it may, the fact is that two coaches have been taken off the recruiting trail. Not good. This is under the same coach that has to hire a goon squad to babysit his otherwise wholesome players. So tired of this crap! Fire his ass and get on with it!

  18. Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

Moreover, the timing of this smacks of negotiating Chizik’s buyout….meaning 0$ vs 7.5mil$$.

  19. DBAU81 says:

Look at it this way. Would we rather have the NCAA posse in town while we’re on top, and therefore have a long way to fall, or now, while we’re at rock bottom anyway? Hopefully this will turn out to be nothing, but if not we might as well take on all our bad juju at once and get it over with. If the investigation hastens the departure of JJ, Chizik et al and perhaps even saves us buyout money in the process, then so much the better. You have to locate the cancer and cut it out before the healing can begin. Bring it on and let’s get on with it, come what may. War Eagle.

  20. almightytmc1 says:

Stuff like this is becoming rather normal for the Jacobs/Chizik regime. More bad press. More losing. More negatives.
It should stand to reason that since Chizik has been given every tool to be successful and through his incompetence and/or utter laziness has managed to fail, that he has not been monitoring recruiting ether.
This is getting beyond old. Screw the buyout. The Auburn administration needs to send a powerful mssage here. It s far better to be viewed as being strong in your convictions, than beng weak in your doubts.
    Fire everything with a tongue.

    • restless6 says:

Agreed. The NCAA has been smelling blood since 2010. They have finally got what they want.

I don’t care if this is the university releasing this or not. It’s out there now, and a black cloud is hanging over Auburn.

  21. Acid Reign Acid Reign says:

…..As you may recall two years ago, amid the Cam Newton feeding frenzy, one journalist stood up and said that there was nothing to the claims, and nothing would come of it. He was widely reviled as a homer. Two years later, hindsight proves that he was right.

…..I’ve watched Phillip Marshall’s posts carefully on this one, and it’s more of the same. The NCAA is asking questions about the Jovon Robinson mess, but we knew they were going to do that months ago. Glacial wheels of the NCAA, and all that. There’s really nothing else to it, it seems.

…..What Pat Forde did is generate some hits for Yahoo, with the Iron Bowl frenzy. You’ll note that he even managed to get Cam Newton’s name in there again. In short, this whole thing is much ado about nothing.
