What former BCS National Champion in the SEC is truly having problems?

By on December 5th, 2012 in Member Post 4 Comments »

Well friends, I don’t believe that to be Auburn. Yes, I was a bit disappointed in the hire of Malzahn initially.  But we could have done a lot worse.  Add to that I was a bit impressed by Arkansas’s hire…. but I think we are ok.  I think good things are around the corner for AU. I have already spoken to the things happening on the Plains tonight…

The team I am referring too is Tennessee.  It is reported tonight that Charlie Strong has turned Tennessee down.  That is a major slap in the face.

An update:  it appears that adding insult to injury UT offered the job to Gundy as well… and it to was rejected.

To recap…. Tennessee first set their sites on John Gruden… but was told no thanks.  Then they went after Charlie Strong… and he too has said no.  Now Gundy has been added to the list.  Who is next?  Can it be that Knoxville is actually in worst shape than Auburn?

I don’t know… but obviously the AD there is back to his white board drawing up future possibilities..  I hear Skip Holtz is unemployed… and they could hire Gene Chizik…  it will be interesting to see who they get.

The SEC is an unforgiving place.  UT has never been the same since UT fired Fulmar (AKA the orange pumpkin).  I hear a country boy can survive… I wonder if that counts for a volunteer?

I never saw this coming back in the mid- 1990s.  Did you? Who would have thought that UT would be worse off than UK????? Not me…

I think UT lost some national respect because of the Lane Kiffin debacle. Rest assured however, UT will resurface sooner than later.

I don’t make much of this. These are not small potatoes that they are cooking. Gruden, Gundy and Strong are BIG names and all have better CIRCUMSTANCES than they would have if they went to Tenn. Make no mistake, UT is a much better job than Oky State or Louisville but there is also a lot of pressure to perform and the competition is double or triple what they would face. Strong has a chance to immediately be a big dog in the ACC and Gundy is percieved as a high quality coach despite routinely managing no more than 8 wins….he is solid 2nd tier in the Big 12, what would he be in the SEC when UT has slipped to the bottom third?

I give UT credit for reaching for proven commodities. They may have to settle, like we did, but at least they aren’t rushing to do so.

And guys, I completely agree. UT will resurface.

But I NEVER saw this coming.
