Tide Latest Victim of Hot Auburn Tigers – (with video highlights)

Despite injuries to key players Bruce Pearl has the Auburn Tigers playing fast and physical ball. Just three days after beating Kentucky for the first time in 16 years, the Tigers defeated arch rival Alabama 83-77 before a sold out crowd in the Auburn Arena Tuesday night.

Just like last Saturday, Auburn fans provided a wild and noisy atmosphere to help their Tigers win a close one against their in-state rival. It was Bruce Pearl‘s first victory over the Tide as the Auburn skipper.

And it was a see-saw battle that saw Auburn (9 – 8, 3 – 3 SEC) come from 10-points down to lead 40-37 at halftime. The physicality of the game was evidenced by the fact there were 68 free throws. The Tigers were 28 of 40 from the line and Bama (10 – 7, 1 – 4 SEC) was 19 of 28. Three Tide players fouled out and one Tiger (Tyler Harris). The battle of the boards further showed just how close the contest was with the Tigers edging Bama 42-38.

Kareem Canty and  Cinmeon Bowers led the way again with Canty tossing in 25 points, including two free throws to seal the win with 22 seconds to go in the game. Bowers had his eighth double-double, scoring 20 points and pulling down 17 rebounds.

After being kept out of the starting line up for seven games for lack of production, Bowers appears to be back to form.

“He has been really locked in, he’s been really focused. He understood why he got out of the starting lineup,” said Pearl. “And he understood why he’s back in it. He was just a man, inside and out. He played terrifically tonight.”

Auburn looks to stay hot in a  road game Saturday night against Florida.

  1. How sweet it is!

    • Yes anytime you beat Bama in anything it’s sweet.

Pearl is doing a fantastic job. Canty was playing on an injured ankle and still put up 25 pts. Hope the Tigers take care of business in Gainesville.

Love beating bama, even when it’s tiddlywinks.

AU still has most of its season ahead. Not sure this team is one that will get into tournament play if it continues to lose games against teams like Missouri or Vanderbilt. BL: we must improve if we want post season play.

Celebrate the win but realize more work is ahead. Pearl is the right fit at this job and has the charisma to make AU’s program the best program in the SEC. One that can play for… Dare I say it? Championships.

And that is saying something. I believe he is JJ’s best hire.

Speaking of which has anyone else seen his 16 for 16 priorities for AU’s athletic department? All I can say is BACKWARDS.

Nice win, but a painful game to watch thanks to the guys in the striped shirts. I swear there were periods of time where every possession had a foul called, as evidenced by the almost 70 free throws taken in the game. And the reversed traveling call at the end was a joke, even though it was a huge help to AU. I’m not sure our guy traveled, but I don’t recall ever seeing a ref come in from 30-40 feet away to change a traveling call made by the guy standing right in front of the play. That crew left a lot to be desired. A LOT!!.

I second the officiating, from both sides. Just dreadful. Made a great game unwatchable at times. There wasn’t a spot on the floor safe from Canty. Wow.

No doubt about it, Pearl is the right guy, got his team playing tough and physical. Can’t help but wonder what he might could have done this season with a healthy team and an eligible Daniel Purfoy.

I am glad to see Pearl getting it done no matter what he has to work with. I will be in Gainesville Saturday night to cheer them on against UF. I hope we can keep the upsets rolling along. And beware of this team at full staff and healthy.

Agree and upsetting UK and Bama is a great step forward for Pearl and the program. Wish we could be in Gainesville too JRowe – pull’em through!
