The Great Debate….Bama or ND?

By on December 6th, 2012 in Football 22 Comments »

Could You pull for these guys in the BCS Championship?

Just wanted to ask you fellow die hard Auburn fans who you will be pulling for in January. I realize that in most situations, it is second nature to pull against Bama at all costs. I have frequently said to people, when they asked how I can be from the state of Alabama, yet pull against Bama in a national championship game, that if Alabama played the Taliban I would wear a turbin.

I feel a little different this year. I cannot help but let my hatred for the conference title-less, conference-less, nearly lost to Purdue, highly overrated Notre Dame team overshadow my Bama hatred. Most years I am against any win that would add another number to the mythical list of championships that Bama claims, but this year will be different. Just curious who you want to see win.

I plead my case for pulling for Bama (gulp, cannot believe I am writing this). Bama, played in a TOUGH SECCG against a great GA team. Bama also played ( and stomped ) AU. They had to EARN their trip to Miami. Notre Dame simply won out. No division championship, just 12 wins and go. I also cannot stand the NBC contract thing that ND has. Even when they were horrible they were on during prime time many times in the season. I simply CANNOT stand Notre Dame and what they stand for.

Also, and this will draw some fire, so I am ready…..Auburn, as of now, is not in the same league as Bama. We may be next year, and hopefully for a while in the future, but with the exception of 09′ and 10′, the divide between Bama and Auburn is very wide. I simply can not continue to ignore/hope for/deny the greatness of the Bama program. They are in a position that few programs  will ever be. It just takes too much mental energy to be the Anti-Bama. I can still love, and root for, and give my money and attention to Auburn, but I simply cannot spend all my time wishing to see trouble befall Bama. As much as I enjoyed the A & M win, those losses are rare.

Just curious who you will be screaming for on Jan. 7th. I plan to be wearing an Auburn shirt, at Smith’s Old Bar, yelling for the Crimson Tide to bring the crystal back to the south.

I understand your frustration but I wouldn’t pull for Bama except to save the lives of my wife and son. Irish for a day. Tiger for life.

  2. CapnVegetto says:

I’m hoping a giant meteor crashes in the middle of the field, or at least on Saban’s head. That will be a good day.

  3. idnod idnod says:

So, God’s Team made it into the Last Official BCS Championship, but which team is it ?? The Crimson Tide likes to believe it is Divinely Ordained to reign supreme in College football, but the Golden Domers have Touchdown Jesus. Its The Liturgy vs The Process. As an Auburn fan, who do I pull for, other than the meteor streaking toward the 50 yard line on the night of the big game ? Its kind of like choosing between a root canal and a colonoscopy. I want the Title to remain in the good old SEC, the state of Alabama, and I want someone to make the arrogant, Conference-Avoiding, too-good-to-join-anybody-else Fighting Irish shut up. But then I’ll have to listen to the Bammers for another year, and you’d better keep an eye on your dog, or some nut case will spray paint “15” on him. I just don’t know, even the Traditional Christmas Holiday creeps me out a bit since Saint Nick took up residence in Tuscaloosa. I’ll probably keep an eye on the proceedings, sort of like Gary Powers in his U-2 over the Soviet Union back in the early 60s. Its good to keep an eye on the enemy, if we can just figure out who they are !!! Golden Domers vs Mobile Homers.

  4. Tigerstripe Tigerstripe says:

No debate at all, not even a question for me… Go Irish! Hatred > Loathing. I can’t stand to think of Saban sitting in living rooms across the southeast with a third ring on his finger saying, “would you like to kiss one of my rings?”

…and I don’t want to hear the argument about supporting the SEC in the NCG. It’s not like we don’t already own the first week in January. We are freakin’ 8-1 in NCG and the one loss was LSU’s loss last year to bama. We already own Boardwalk and Park Place and have already dropped a couple of fat hotels on the lots.

    Go Irish!

    I say:

  6. Tigerz Tigerz says:

I’m confused. Auburn is not playing. Who in the world else would I pull for besides whoever is playing uat??

  7. Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

If my hatred for UAT was people, it would be CHINA! I do however favor the meteor plan. We ARE Auburn. NASA connections abound.

  8. Acid Reign Acid Reign says:

……At the risk of sounding too EDSBS, “ur doin’ it wrong!” I’m working during the game, because I’d never blow a personal day to watch Bama play!

……I’ll watch it late-night, with a plate of food and enjoy. If Bama kicks butt, I’ll bask in SEC supremacy. If Notre Dame wins, I’ll be laughing myself silly, and thinking of good snark for Bama folk at work the next day.

    …..We can’t lose, that day.

  9. rn4au rn4au says:

    Rudy! Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!

  10. War_Eagle_2010 War_Eagle_2010 says:

KevinATL, you’ve been in Atlanta too long if you can actually root for UAT. My best friend is a bammer, and it was hard enough dealing with him during the AU six winning game streak (remember those stupid “got 12?” shirts). I would rather laugh all night as a pathetic ND team kicked UATs butt. Also while I hope he doesn’t get injured (would never wish that on a player) I hope ol’ TJ Yeldon Turncoat has fumblelitus that day and Cyrus “B. Arnold” Cuanjo (I refuse to spell his name right) misses a few key blocks, but I probably shouldn’t be so petty… oh well

  11. sullivan013 sullivan013 says:

My first purchase at J+M bookstore was a bumper srickere that read “I’m an IKISH War Eagle” in 1979. They were still wildly popular after 1973 and 1976 and soid well as late as 1980.

And if I could find one, I’d buy it again.

    • bryankwalton says:

OK, Sullivan, I’ll bite. I’ll admit that I’m not sure I’m geting the “IKISH” part. Can you explain the bumper sticker?

      • Col.Angus Col.Angus says:

I’m going to assume that was supposed to be “IRISH”….or given it was the not so PC ’70s, a drunk IRISH….”IKISH” since that was the last time the ND was dominant for a period and feuded with the Bammers.

  12. KungFuPanda9 KungFuPanda9 says:

Well, I guess I’m gonna be the Lone Ranger here. I am pulling for Bama because it is good for the prestige of our conference. I will never forget 2004 when we should have played for the National Championship. That will never happen again as long as the SEC keeps a team in play for all the marbles.

LSU got in with 2 losses largely out of guilt for us having been overlooked in 2004.

Plus, don’t we all get a cut of that money?

I know we hate the unwashed fans, but the players should be a different story. I will never forget one of the Bama players saying something personal and encouraging to Cam after the 2010 game. Let that spirit of brotherhood be an example of what the players feel.

  13. Col.Angus Col.Angus says:

Like Acid said above there isn’t really a “bad” outcome in this. If Saban wins ANOTHER Championship does that make it any tougher on us? No, not really, he pretty much gets any player he NEEDS. He IS the best college coach in my lifetime, including Bryant since he doesn’t have to stock his roster with 200 players to dominate…he dominates within the rules (that we know of). Gotta respect that. And of course the SEC gets the prestige, money, blah, blah, blah.

But…I’ll be rooting for the IRISH. I truly think it is bad for college football for the SEC to win EVERY single year (unless its Auburn). Fans outside of the SEC are losing interest in football since they don’t have a chance to win and look at the God Awful realingment going on…..all just to find a way to compete with the SEC. If it isn’t careful college football will end up looking like MLB where only a few super wealthy teams get to compete for a championship every year.
Notre Dame needs to win for college football to mean something again, hopefully for the STUDENT athlete to MEAN something again. We all know that Bama is just a football factory that spits out 5-6 first rounders every year, Notre Dame will be luck to get that many in the draft period. We need competitors to the SEC, we need traditional powers to get back in the mix so teams like Boise, TCU and Northern Illinois aren’t populating the BCS just because they went undefeated against the San Diego States of the world.
I want competition not domination… GO IRISH!!

    • ATL_AU_FAN ATL_AU_FAN says:

As much as I agree with your premise, we would not feel that way if this was Auburn heading to Miami instead of Alabama. With that said, I will be in the minority of AU fans pulling for UA against the Irish.
And my wife, she being the fine Catholic girl, will be on your side Col. pulling for the Irish!

  14. james4au says:

No debate for me. Number one on my hate list is bammer. The Irish are a close second but the thought of my Jack Russel having a big crimson. UA and a 15 turns my stomach.

  15. SuperDave says:

Man!! I’m a die hard AU fan but this hate mail is disgusting!! Now I know why my girlfriend is so offended by my distaste for Alabama (she’s a bama fan). It just makes us look petty and cheap when I see it in print. I don’t care for Nick Saban and many of their fans (not all) but at the end of the day let’s keep it in perspective. These are kids who have parents and families and it is a football game. It is also the SEC. I will be pulling for Alabama on Dec 7th for sure. And, I will be pulling for Auburn to bring our program back up to the level they have been in recent years so we can crush them next year and hopefully every year after that. Realistically, any reasonable person who can divest themself of their own ego would have to admit that they have created one heck of a program. WDE
