Tame the Tide! (Auburn at Alabama Open Thread)
Auburn takes on the defending national champions today
(Photo by John David Mercer/USA TODAY Sports)
War Eagle, everybody! This afternoon, the Auburn Tigers travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to take on the the hated Alabama Crimson Tide in the Iron Bowl. It is time for the biggest rivalry in college football to play out once again.
This game will kick off at 2:30 PM Central Time, and it will be nationally televised on CBS. I’ll be at the keyboard with hot coffee and a big bowl of Chex Mix for this one and will have a full play by play.
After a rainy Black Friday evening, skies should be most clear by Saturday afternoon, and temps will be temperate, in the mid 60s at kickoff. We’ll have sunset during the second half, and it will be roughly 60 degrees F by game’s end.
As always, feel free to join in and enjoy this thread. I will at the keyboard this morning and afternoon, commenting on play around the SEC and the nation. We’ll take on the Tide and never give up hope! I’ll be here to help pull my Tigers through this contest. War Eagle, and let’s beat Alabama!
…..I am going to switch over to an old DVD, and try to let it all go, for the rest of the evening. I did give up early, on South Carolina. They continue to make of a fight of it, over in Clemson. I’m kinda football saturated at this point, and filled up with the last of the turkey… My time is up. I thank you for yours! Grades, tomorrow afternoon.
…..I am consoling myself watching Muschamp and Coach O melt down under disappointing performances. Jimbo’s team is really punking Coach O.
I have not had a drink all day today. 52-21 is sobering!
Auburn Football has some soul searching to do after this season. The AD has probably turned his phone off tonight. The Auburn call in show is intense tonight. I feel that Chip Lindsay will take the fall for this season. The OL was not as good this year, but Stidham also regressed. Gus threw in the towel tonight. It was a very disappointing season.
…..I find it interesting that national talking heads are pontificating that the SEC is down, and is no longer the top league in college football. I just went through the standings, and looked for myself. With Vanderbilt’s win today, the SEC has 11 bowl-eligible teams, out of 14 total. The nearest competitor is the ACC, with 9. No one else has as many.
…..South Carolina looks a lot like US. Playing hard, playing inspired, but they are starting to get ground up like hamburger. They have no answer for the Clemson offense.
…..Even if you wanted to put Petrino’s reputation aside, What I looked at is that this guy is not personable at all. How is he going to lure recruits? Petrino solved that issue by job-hopping. He’s an awesome play-caller. Left some dumpster fires behind. Louisville/Strong era, Falcons misery, an Arkansas fiasco that still hasn’t recovered, and even Western Kentucky is suffering from his tenure. Petrino stayed too long at Louisville, and it caught up with him.
…..Sometimes you just have to ride it out. In 2008, I was all in on growth stocks, saving for my retirement. Took an absolute bath, and lost about a third of a life savings. Did not change tactics… I am diversifying finally, ten years later. I would have missed out on the longest boom in a century, if I had bailed out.
Sounds like fun!
Hey buddy, that reminds me… imma going to the AU – NC State game on December 19th in Raleigh, NC. I might let you guys know how that goes.
At least I can drown my misery in some Auburn basketball.
Back in the day, Ben Affleck bought Jennifer Lopez a golden thrown like you said.
I think I would have got. A golden toilet along with the sports car
Anyone one getting 600,000 a game is on a thrown.
Malzahn, sitting on his thrown…..
If Auburn was going to slum they would have had Petrino a while back. Bo Nix will be on campus soon and his dad will soon follow. Native Son… hierarchy to the thrown of Malzahn!
I have always enjoyed your analysis Acid, win or lose. I hope that Auburn remembers this game next season.
Wake up guys and face reality.
Everything ol’ Gus knows about coaching Offensive football, ol’ Gus learned by coaching offensive football in High School.
Ol’ Gus’ Offense will get you beat in the SEC.
Ol’ Gus is out of his depth in this league.
Yes. Saban could not hire Freeze due to SEC rules. Freeze’s daughter is now a freshman at Auburn and he has been in town a few times. A friend saw them at the Waffle House. Where do we go from here? I will just have to grin and bear it as I deal with my Bama family members and UGA friends.
Stidahm’ numbers and rankings are just like Matt Ryan with Falcons , they look good on paper but they don’t equate to wins and in tough games folds.
I suspect that the roughing penalties against Bama were on purpose. I was guessing that they figured that Stidham would get all squirrelly if he got punched in the mouth a few times.
…..I’ll have to watch this hot mess again tomorrow, but I thought that the offensive line played pretty well, except for a few snaps. Stidham can’t blame his struggles this game, on them. On the scheme, perhaps. Definitely on another half dozen dropped balls.
Auburn will never hire freeze after Alabama got declined that idea.
Stidahm at his best can’t perform on par with Ga, Al, or Clemson w/o a dynamic running back.
Supposedly Saban kicked around the idea of hiring Freeze, so I can’t say that Freeze’s bad reputation should stop Auburn from hiring him.
I do agree. Also, Jarrett Stidham did not perform well.
…..Yeah, dyingculture. I think Lashlee left because he knew he’d never develop his own reputation, under Gus.
…..I feel for Chip, if that is true. I really don’t think he’s been the issue. What we saw this year was happening way back in 2015, and is just a continuation.
I think that Hugh Freeze will be getting a call soon.
(that was a snarky comment, in case you didn’t know)
… Malzhan was meddled with, and he had to let go of Rhett Lashlee. The offense hasn’t been the same since.
Bo Nix and Patrick Nix … bring it on…Malzahn set back and shut up
Chip Lindsay could be gone tonight.
…..If Gus is coming back, he has to call it as he wishes. If that’s Hugh Freeze, so be it. The idea of hiring Patrick Nix so that his kid will sign, smacks a little too much like Houston Nutt, to me.
Yes. Gus will be back for at least another year. He will need 10 wins to survive.
I was thinking the same thing aboout OSU. The lopsided final score will probably be the excuse the committee needs to put OSU in the playoff, even though they probably don’t deserve it.
…..I’ve seen administrative meddling work just one time, when Pat Dye was forced to fire Frank Orgel and Jack Crowe. Auburn went on to win 3 SEC titles. After that, Bowden was called out and meddled with, and left a mess. Tuberville was meddled with, and it ended up with Petrino and Jetgate.
I think we will get a bowl win. At 7-5, we will probably get a matchup where we far outclass the opponent talent-wise.
I doubt if Oklahoma could stop Bama’s passing attack. West Virginia put up 704 yards last night. If Ohio State wins the Big 10, they may get into the playoff.
Malzahn is here to stay (2 years)!
…..My thought is that the administration handed Gus this big contract, and we will have him back next year. That’s been announced publically by Athletic Director Greene. How much meddling will happen, though?
Will Malzahn get his first bowl win other than Birmingham Bowl?
…..There will be some interesting debates coming, on coaching changes. I will put my two cents in, as well.
…..I like watching college football, and will watch with interest. But no, I won’t be pulling for either team in the SEC Title game.
Yes. Auburn has some recruiting to do. The Auburn call in show on espnau.com will be interesting tonight. I cannot pull for either team next week in the SEC trophy game. Both fan bases have no class at all.
…..We will see if anyone else can stop them. I’m betting Alabama/Oklahoma would be interesting…
…..Auburn tallied 281 total yards, Bama 498. Alabama passed for 377 yards, and did not have a turnover.
Seasonal affective disorder- a mood disorder characterized by depression that occurs at the same time every year! Thanks Gus
Hate that post game cheer
…..Alabama beats Auburn, 52-21.
…..Will be one more play. Willis will give to Shivers, will get the first, and this one will wind down.
Hats off to Bama – they’ve got the talent and the coaches
…..Clock under a minute. Power set. Here is a fake, Willis, will get nine, and that may do it.
…..3rd and 1. Two back, tight end. Finally. Motion across. Power play to Shivers, will pick up the first.
…..2nd and 7. Motion in. Willis fakes, pumps, fights to midfield.
…..At the Auburn 43. Malik Willis in. Trips right. Fakes, keeps, cuts back, and he’ll get about 3 after running nearly the width of the field and back.
….Christian Tutt, tripped at the 42.
…..Alabama will punt from the 18.
…..Clock still running. Alabama will milk that clock. Hurts, will scramble, stopped a couple of yards short by Darrell Williams.
…..No call, 3rd and 5.
Painful to watch. On to next season. Changes have to be coming.
…..2nd and 8 Bama. Give Harris, facemask? Got to the 15.
…….Alabama takes over with 4:33 left. Hurts gives to Harris, for two.
The “Dixieland Delight” song went sideways tonight.
…..Here’s Siposs. Out of bounds, at the nine.
…..Now 3rd and 9. 4 wides. Blitz, tried to dump it to Whitlow, incomplete. Dropped.
…..3rd and 4. Trips right. Hurry up! What are you doing? Delay of game.
…..Stove in motion, fake, and Stidham keeps, dumped for a loss at the 37.
….2nd and 2 for Auburn, after Stove got a catch.
Auburn could have beat them by 100 and it wouldn’t have changed anything.
…..1st and 10 at the Tide 43, and Auburn has to burn a timeout.
….Bama bails us out with a roughing the passer flag.
…..A terrrible throw by Stidham, WAY underthrew Canella, should have been picked.
…..Poor, poor call, stopping the clock for Bama.
After last year this game has less significance than ever! Except for our emotional stability.
…..2nd and 8. trips left. Throws the ball over the head of Whitlow, incomplete.
It’s one thing to lose to your arch rival; allowing them to score over 50 points is entirely different
….Shivers on the sweep, run down after 2.
Next year Bryant and Nix with his dad as offensive coordinator. Malzahn will be here!
…..Troxell is indeed, in the game at left tackle.
…..3rd and inches. Here’s Whitlow, all the way to the 40.
Announcers are debating Stidham’s future. I can’t imagine him sticking around for this cluster another year.
It was over after the 75 yard td was called back!
My HS football coach was on the 1957 team. Auburn won 40-0. The Auburn money people will not like the results of this season.
…..8:35 remains, in this root-canal of a game.
…..And Prince Tega Wanagho is down, favoring a knee. That would be a big loss. I’m guessing Austin Troxell would come in?
…..2nd and 2. Auburn taking forever to get a play in. Three wides. Draw, Whitlow, will fight for one. That fooled no one. Good individual effort.
Bama and UGA will only get better next season. Auburn has a long way to go to catch up. Gus is trying to run clock.
…..Auburn will start at the 25. Stidham is still in, huddle. Schwartz on the speed sweep, goes out at the 33.
…..Worst margin isn’t in danger here, I don’t think. If Bama gets another TD, most given up to Bama is in danger.
As bad as this looks it’s the best we have looked which is sickening.
Looks like they are a threat to smash that record tonight
….1948, in fact. The Earl Brown years….
….Worst was 55-0, back in the late 1940s.
Auburn don’t need a backup qb, put another RB on rooster!Cause that’s all backup does anyway.
Hey Acid – what is the worst all-time score Bama has put up on us?
…..Whew. Bama covers the spread, if this stands. Bulovas is up and good, and with 9:29 left, Alabama leads, 52-21.
…..Hurts fakes, throws, and hits Waddle, and gone for the score. Wow.
I do not feel that Stidham will be back next season.
…..No matter if I was Saban, or Malzahn, my starter gets benched, now. More football to be played this year, and this game is over.
…..Alabama takes over at their 47, with 9:39 left in the game. Alabama leads Auburn, 45-21.
…..Even read correctly, if Stidham puts that ball higher, only Tucker Brown could get it, or nobody.
Let’s see who they put in at QB.. is it clear the bench time?
…..Read the tight end throwback. Another play Auburn has run several times this year.
…..3rd and 3. Huddle, under center. Fakes, lobs one, and Jennings picks it off. Terrible pass.
Tough to watch.
…..2nd and 7. Trips left, give Shivers, got about 4.
…..New set of downs. Trips left. Give Shivers, they are going to kill that young man with no lead blockers.
Agree with your mother Randy… Malzahn should go because he can’t recruit and that idiot president who gave him an extension should go too – malpractice
……Targeting, no call. Double twins on 3rd and 6. Stidham will all day, runs, and somehow got the first!
……2nd and 8. Huddle, motion out. Give Shivers, hit in the head, for 2.
Hopefully Stidahm will go and play for his father n law , we tired of him.
…..1st and 10. Give, Shivers won’t get much. No lead blocker, once again.
…..3rd and 1. Shotgun? Motion in. Give Whitlow gets it on second effort.
If Auburn played this hard earlier we wouldn’t lost to Tennese guarunteed!
…..2nd and 5 for the Tigers. Pistol set. Fakes, keeps, got the first down? No, too big a slide.
It could be a shoot out. Justin Fields will need to play for UGA.
Can both teams lose next week?
…..Trips right for Auburn. Give Shivers, to the 30.
…..Kickoff, fair caught by Cox at the 21.
……After getting blown out by both Georgia and Alabama, all I can do it tip my hat to them. SHould be interesting in Atlanta, next weekend.
Time to air the ball up. My mother says that Auburn needs to get better players.
He’s coming then Bo with his dad!
…..PAT is up and good, and with 14:29 left, this one has gotten ugly. Alabama 45, Auburn 21.
I will agree, Bryant isn’t the best passing QB. But neither was Nick Marshall.
…..That is a catch, a great one, unfortunately.
…..One official called in incomplete, and one a catch. Will be reviewed.
Kelly Bryant will be in Auburn next year with Bo Nix as understudy! Then Patrick Nix will come on board the following year to run the offensive show. Count on it!
…..Here’s A fake, fade. Ruggs, caught?
…..Quick screen, Waddle, down to the 21, another first down.
…..2nd and 7 Tide. Pistol. Give Harris, will power for 8.
Well…. sold on Bryant or not…. could Kelly Bryant possibly be any worse than Stidham this year?
…..Bryant was benched, and bailed the same week. That makes me nervous… Of course, with the free agent rule, no telling how many Auburn players will be lost this next year. Hopefully we can pick up a few in compensation…
Kelly Bryant could be made to order for a Malzahn offense. He’s 6’3″ and weighs about 230. He could be the best RPO QB Auburn has seen since Nick Marshall. Marshall adapted in one offseason to the offense. Cam Newton did too.
…..Everyone is sold on Kelly Bryant, but I’m not, either. Another quarterback that has to come in and adapt to a weird offense.
Hopefully Stidham enters the draft. If he does, Kelly Bryant to Auburn is probably a done deal. But unfortunately, I just don’t see how Stidham can enter the draft considering how flawed his play is this year.
Who will be a running QB? Clemson’s reject?
…..Stidham may be back. His draft stock has really taken a hit, this year.
…..2nd and 7. The third quarter comes to an end. Alabama leads Auburn, 38-21.
…..Here’s the Bama offense. Give Harris, got about 3.
I am really looking forward to having a running QB again.
…..Only 33 yards. Average continues to go down.
O line continues to be manhandled
…..Siposs in to punt again. Siposs with a bit of a rugby look, goes out at the Auburn 43. Poor, poor punt.
….Sacked on a 3 man rush.
…..3rd and 19, from the AUburn 13. Stidham will be sacked at the ten.
…..Was outside the tackle box, but that does not apply on a flea flicker. Correct call.
….ONly 2, 2nd and 8. Trips left again. Pistol. Moves Whitlow, flea flicker, and Stidham has to throw it away.
…..1st and 10 Tigers. Trips left, give right to Whitlow, got a 3.
…..Here’s yet another Tide kickoff. SHort, at the five, Igbinoghene, put down at the 22.
…..Bulovas is up, and good, and with 2:22 left in the 3rd, Alabama leads Auburn, 38-21.
……1st and 10 Tide. Two backs. Motion out. Fakes, will fire to Smith, jukes a man, scores. Igbinoghene gave that one up.
….New set of downs at the 45. Give to Harris, juking tackles, to the Auburn 40.
……4 wides for Tua. Takes, fakes, hits Devonte Smith for a big gain.
…..Oh, it was a bit of a push!
…..Carlson to kick off. Another touchback for Carlson.
…..Saban is going nuts, claiming that Slayton pushed off. Why does Malzahn get flagged for arguing, and Saban is 40 yards downfield doing the same, and gets no call?
A great play by Slayton. His tendency to drop balls has always puzzled me.
…..Carlson is, and good on the PAT. WIth 3:31 left in the 3rd, Auburn has cut the Bama lead to 31-21.
…..I can’t believe Alabama had that bad of a coverage bust! Way underthrown, but Slayton was able to adjust!
…..3rd and 2. Huddle again. Fake, slings it, Slayton, will SCOREEEEEEEE!
The talent gap in this game is huge.
…..2nd and 7. Milling around on the formation. Huddle, breaking out. Woody? Fakes it, swing to Schwartz, got about 4.
….1st and 10 Tigers. Double twins. Stidham changing his play. Give Whitlow, falls forward for three.
I am looking for Chandler Cox.
…..Ryan Davis apparently done for the day.
…..Auburn nearly got another one. Tutt will take the punt, out to the Auburn 37.
….All out blitz, made him throw early.
…..Tua will take, and fires high for Ruggs!
I agree. I would just line up and throw the ball.
…..At the 26. About 3rd and 4.
…..2nd and 8 Bama. Three wides. Give Harris, got about 3.
…..Give Jacobs, got 2.
…..You have a stable full of receivers, and you throw it to the kicker on 4th down. Wow.
…..A swing gate sort of play, offensive line to the left, Carlson to the right, and Bama played it well.
…..On 4th and 4, weird look. Willis in, fires to Carlson, short.
….Two down territory? 3rd and 6. Fans on their feet. Twins. Motion in. Stidham swings it to Whitlow, will go down at the 23.
…..2nd and 6. Twins either side. Changing the play. Stidham rolls right, Schwartz can’t get it.
….New set of downs. Stidham, screen to Sove, moves to the Bama 25.
…..Well, not to the face either, on that replay. Just late.
…..No targeting, but will call roughing the passer, which will tack on.
…..Wasn’t a head to head on Stidham, but hands to the face definitely applies.
….Low throw, and Slayton had to take a knee to catch it. WOuld have been a score. Bama targeted Stidham, and they flagged it, too.
….Brings up 3rd and 9. Bunch look, Stove in motion. Fires to Slayton, first down!
….2nd and 9. Empty, slant, dropped by Slayton.
….Buck sweep, guards didn’t get around.
…..1st and 10 Tigers. Give Whitlow on the crossbuck, nothing doing.
….Oh, yeah. Back then, you stuck your helmet right in there. Most lethal weapon we had, we were taught.
…..Davis is up, and will be walking off under his own power. Bama players wishing him well. That’s good sportsmanship, there.
Number 4 for Bama knew that hit was bad. Ironically, we were taught to target. I broke one face mask when I was hit on an end sweep in HS.
…..That should move the ball up to about the Auburn 44.
…..Auburn trainers are tending to Davis. He is moving, which is a really good sign.
That is the definition of targeting.
…..Ruling is confirmed, targeting. Mayden is ejected.
…..Helmet to helmet, there.
…..Flag, and targeting? Ryan Davis is knocked out.
…..3rd and 6. Stidham throws underneath, and Ryan Davis is popped down short.
…..Waited WAY too long to throw that.
…..2nd and 6. Bunch, moving around. Trips left, now. All kind of time, Threw deep, Slayton, short, tipped around, and lucky it wasn’t picked.
…..1st and 10 Tigers. Three wides. Now a shift, unbalanced line, Whitlow gets 4.
Yeah, Stidham just hasn’t been up to the task this entire year. He looked good in the Washington game, but that was the highlight of his year. Stidham has reliably disappeared during every big game.
…..Bulovas to kick off. Taken at the one by Igbinoghene, and he is BELTED at the 21.
…..Bama has taken the top off the Auburn defense twice, in the second half.
It will now be a difficult hill to climb unless Stidham can begin to play better.
…..That’s a bust. Auburn was in a Tampa two zone, and the running back should NEVER get past the middle linebacker.
Par for the course. Goodnight.
…..Knockout punch, there. The PAT is up and good, and Alabama takes a 31-14 lead with 9:49 left in the 3rd quarter.
…..Split backs for Bama. Fake, Tua fires on the seam route to Jacobs, and he’ll break tackles into the end zone.
…..Russell. That moves it to the Auburn 33.
……New set of downs. Twin backs. give Harris, and Auburn pulls him down by the facemask.
…..2nd and 2. Expect a shot, here. Tua, tunnel screen to Jacobs, and he’s out to midfield.
…..Fake, and fired to Devonte Smith, for about 8 yards.
…..Auburn simply isn’t a threat to get the ball down the field to even 1 wide receiver today, much less 3. Wasted bodies.
…..Play calls to open the second half, a roll and throw too high. Predictable give up the gut with 3 wides in the game. Then, a throw short of the first down marker.
….Only 37 yards, giving Alabama field position that their offense does not need to have!
…..Siposs with the boot, fair caught at the Bama 31.
…..Had a clean pocket that time, but not a wise choice.
…..Brings up a familiar 3rd and 8. Stidham with 4 wides. He’ll have time, throws to Schwartz short, and will be a couple of yards short.
…..2nd and 10, behind the sticks again. Motion to the wide side. Give Whitlow, not much.
…..Auburn opens with 3 wides, 2 backs. Fakes, rolls right, misses Slayton at the 40. He was open…
…..Igbinoghene and Shivers deep. Booted into the endzone, downed.
…..Who will have the best halftime adjustments, Malzahn offensively, or Saban defensively? We’ll find out soon.
…..Jamel Dean on man coverage, made a swat at the ball, but that was perfectly thrown.
…..The PAT is up and good, and with 12:57 left in the 3rd, Alabama leads, 24-14.
…..2nd and 2. Going up top, Jeudy on the corner route, touchdown Bama.
…..New set of downs. Tua with time, fires to Smith, tripped by Davis, got 8.
……3rd and 1. Bunch set. Motion. Give Jacobs breaking through, to the 46.
…..2nd and 9. 3 wides. Tua will fire short, Irv Smith for about 9
…..1st and 10 from the 25 for the TIde. Give Harris, not much!
I use baking powder instead of yeast. Time for a big stop.
….>Carlson to kick off, to the goal line, Jacobs takes a knee, touchback.
…..Stole that stat shamelessly from the radio team…
…..Auburn has blocked 7 kicks, this year. The most since 1950!
Yuengling and Miller High Life makes a great pizza dough. A chef in St. Louis gave me his recipe.
…..Fans weakly applauding, as Alabama returns to the field.
…..How about that? We got about 10 seconds of coverage of the Auburn band!
It is time for Jarrett Stidham to go long. Bama’s safeties are creeping up to the line and not respecting the pass.
…..JaTarvious Whitlow leads all Tigers, with 65 total yards, 40 on the ground and 25 on a dumpoff pass.
Tua Tagliova is 14 of 20, for 116 yards passing. He added 26 yards on 4 carries. Tua hasn’t hit the downfield passes, but he’s hitting them underneath. Auburn has tackled pretty well, to hold him to 5.8 yards per pass on 70 percent completion percentage.
…..Auburn has done most of their damage on the ground, as Stidham is just 5 of 15 for 36 yards.
…..I’m really a cheapskate, these days. Black Box Pinot, or Bota are staples. Beer, I’m likely to just pick up a case of Yeungling at Sam’s Club.
…..Trader’s is a great place to shop for beer and wine, as long as one isn’t a brand snob. A lot of their store stuff is pretty good. I’m having Club-400 whiskey. I’ve earned it over the last few days!
That is a great beer. I use it for my pizza dough. You say that Auburn has a chance
Good idea. I will get a Boatswain double IPA from the fridge. 8.4% and costs only $4.99 for a six pack at Trader Joe’s, actually very good! It’s a little hoppy, so it’s not for everyone, but I highly recommend… a true price performer!
Whoa! What Gus team is this?? More fodder for why he is inconsistent…
…..It is now time to switch over from coffee, to a drink more substantial.
…..I figured Vandy would win that game, but I figured it would be closer.
…..The 2 three and outs near the half were huge. Auburn had the short end of the stick, till that point. Got the blocked punt, and converted it for a touchdown to keep it close.
Vandy is beating Tennessee 17-0 going into halftime…..
…..And it’s halftime. Alabama leads Auburn, 17-14 at the half.
I guess Malzahn is happy with going to halftime down by 3.
….Neither team using their timeouts. Both have all 3.
…..Pistol set. Give Whitlow, nothing doing.
……2nd and 8. Clock runs, under a minute.
…..1st and 10 Tigers. Two backs. Give Shivers, cut it up, to the 32.
….Stops the clock with 1:46.
…..2nd and 2. Package coming in. 3 wides. Give Whitlow, will power close, picked it up!
…..2:31 left in the half. Huddle. Power set, pitch to the boundary, got about 8!
….Got it off, Ryan Davis gets it at the 16, to the 19.
…..Alabama sends out the punt team, and the boo birds are out.
…..Iggy ran him out short.
…..Rabbit package for Auburn, on 3rd and 9. Pressure, and tua will scramble, spottted a yard short!
……2nd and 10. Pistol set. Give, nothing for Harris!
…..Tua in the gun for Bama. Time, time… misses Ruggs, well covered by Dean.
I think he used to be a high school QB.
He probably has more TD passes than stidham
…..Here’s Carlson to kick off. Sails out of the end zone.
Special teams has been amazing like that the whole year. Porter switching to special teams coach may have been the most intelligent coaching change of the offseason..
…..Can’t believe that worked.
A little razzle dazzle
……Alabama failed to see that coming, even though Ryan Davis lined up way back. Auburn has run that several times before. Ryan Davis has been money throwing that ball, though.
…..Carlson is up and good, and with 4:04 left in the half, Alabama still leads, 17-14.
…..Throwback double pass, TOUCHDOWNNNNN, AUBURN! WOW!
…..2nd and 10. Motion out. Davis will throw to Malik Miller, and he will score!!!!
“Punt Bama Punt”
…..At the Bama 23. Huddle, empty set. Lobs to Schwartz, and nothing there. Fumble, caught by Tega!
….No, it was Smoke Monday!
…..Did Peters get that?
…..It is BLOOOOOCKEDDDD! Monday!
…..Short by a yard, where it is marked, and in comes the punting team.
…..3rd and 3. 3 wides. Give to Jacobs, he’s close.
…..2nd and 12. Tua throws on the out, caught by Jeudy, at the 23.
…..Bama from their 16. Here’s Jacobs on the give, loses two!
I’m losing hope that an NFL team would want Stidham after this showing. Bye bye, Kelly Bryant, because Stidham might have to come back next year.
…..Bama takes over with 6:32 left in the half. Auburn defense must find a way to get a stop. Allow a touchdown here, and the game is likely out of reach. Alabama gets the ball to start the second half, as well.
…..siposs picks up a low snap, boots it to the 13, downed at the 16. Only 38 yards.
….Kim got beat up the middle on the pass rush.
…..3rd and 7. 4 wide bunch. Motion across to the left. Misses a wide open Slayton on the out.
…..2nd and 7. Martin checks in. 4 wides. Changing his play. Stidham dropped the ball on the fake, and had to fall on it.
……Bunch set, under center. Motion, give Schwartz, only about 3. That was easy to see coming.
…..Moves the ball to the Auburn 43. Official timeout?
….Yes! Wipes out the sack!
…..And a flag? Facemask?
…..3rd and 7 for Auburn, possession play. Stidham bringing 6. Sacked.
…..2nd and 10. Give Whitlow, not much, about 3.
…..Auburn will start at the 25. Three wides, 2 backs. Under center now. Fake, has to throw it away. An unblocked rusher.
Another fair catch at the goal line?
This play series is important.
…..Here’s the kickoff by Bulovas. Fair caught by Shivers at the two.
…..Vandy up on UT, 14-0.
…..Basically a 3-point call by the refs on that one, on the trap that wasn’t. A 40 yard attempt would have been much more dicey.
Welp. We saved some face there.
…..Right down the middle good. Alabama grabs a 17-7 lead, with 8:59 left in the half.
….Brings up 4th and 10. Bulovas in for a 30 yard attempt.
….Review, stands. Bama gets the call, natch.
…..Ball hit the ground and the hands simultaneously. The ground cannot help with the catch, and it did, there.
…..That is a trap. Not caught! Will review…
Tackle, tackle, tackle!!!!
…..Tide has trips right. Pressure, Marlon Davidson can’t get him down, Waddle makes the catch at the 12, and put down.
…..And a late flag thrown, intentional grounding! 3rd and 20 at the 22.
…..2nd and 10 at the Auburn 11. Three wides. Big blitz, throws it away, again no grounding call?
….Screen Jeudy, cuts back, nothing doing!
….3rd and 6. Motion in. Blitz, doesn’t get there, slant to Ruggs, inside the 15.
…..2nd and 6. Tua with time, dumped it, grounding? No call.
…..Give Harris, will mash for about 4.
…..New set of downs for Bama, at the Auburn 26.
….Both hands, and the early takedown.
…..1st and 15. 1 back. Fakes, deep… and a flag on Javaris Davis, hit him early.
…..First and ten Tide. 2 backs, 3 wide. Alabama jumped early!
…..3rd and 2. At midfield. Two backs. Bunch set. Give, Jacobs gets outside, to the 36 of Auburn.
…..call it 8. 2nd and 2. Pumps, over the head of Smith.
…..New set of downs. Trips left. Give Harris right, slashes for about 9.
……Alabama in the bunch. Tua to throw. Will dump to Harris wide open, to the 42.
….A three ‘n’ out sure would be nice, here. Better yet, a turnover.
50 yards, no return.
….In comes Siposs. Waddle deep. Waddle takes at the 32, and NOTHING! Dean…
Past few plays stidahm balled way before pressure got there
…..3rd and 17. Trips right. Changing the play. Six in the box.3 man rush. Runs, throws to the sideline, incomplete.
3 rd and hundred
…..Knew it was coming, jumped anyway.
……And Auburn jumps.
…..3rd and 12. Stidham will get field pressure, this time.
….Bunch set, Stidham, has time, will have to throw it away.
…..Good call, not executed.
……Two backs. Motion out, Swing pass to R. Davis, no blocking, lost two.
…..Auburn starts at the 25. Run up the gut coming.
…..Here is the kickoff. Booted short, fair caught by Shivers at the nine.
…..Vanderbilt is leading Tennessee, 7-0 near the end of the first quarter.
…..Auburn helped Bama on that drive, with a kickoff out of bounds to give them good field position, and then the facemask.
….Bulovas is up and good, and with 14:15 left in the half, Alabama leads Auburn 14-7.
…..Reviewing? I think he scored.
…..first and goal, quickly, screen, and Ruggs fights the ball over for a score.
I’m just glad we made it to first commercial without Bama score.
…..2nd and 9. Bunch set, quick out to Jeudy, near the stake, got it to the 4.
…..Shotgun set for Bama. Give Harris, fell forward for a yard.
Weak holding call on 75 yard td
…..The tale thus far is dropped balls and penalty yards. Auburn had 48 penalty yards, in just 1 quarter.
BS! Bama has all of their yardage on Auburn “penalties”
Zebras helping Bama
……At the Auburn 15, 1st and 10, and the clock runs out. That’s the end of the first quarter, tied at 7-7. Bama is threatening, though.
…..Gonna be a facemask.
…..2nd and 8. 4 wides. Fake, throws the hitch, Jacobs fighting close, and a flag.
…..Throwback to Harris, tripped for just 2.
…..No, not even hit. Just fell down.
Multiple missed tackles, but he’s fast
…..Block in the back uncalled.
…..3rd and 5 Tide. 4 wides. Motion in. Time, spins, will run, faked a man out of his shoes, and picks up 21.
……2nd and 10. 4 wides. Motion, fake, thrown short, Smith for about 5.
…..1st and 10 Tide, Pistol set. Harris, stopped in his tracks, nothing!
…..And Carlson boots the kickoff out of bounds. Youtch.
…..I would look for some Alabama adjustments, here. Auburn hasn’t even thought about a deep ball, yet. Alabama will ratchet down the coverage.
Yes. That was a great series by the offensive line.
…..And then Stidham read the delayed blitz, and found his checkdown receiver Whitlow, wide open.
…..What was shocking on that last drive, was that the Auburn offensive line really took it to the Tide front.
That was a beautiful set of downs.
…..Carlson is up and good, and this game is tied at 7! With 2:37 left in the first quarter!
…..1st and 5 at the nine. Wildcat, give Schwartz, WILL SCOOOORE!
…..Call, Bama had 12 men on the field, 5 yards, repeat first down.
…..First and ten Tigers. Give Whitlow, flag not much.
…..3rd and long. Trips right. Delayed blitz, dumped to Whitlow, all the way down to the 14!
…..2nd and 12. One back, Whitlow. 4 wides. Whitlow wide, pass batted down at the line.
…..Stidham, will run, will be dropped at the 39.
……Huddle, breaking out. Empty set. Screen, Davis, inside the 40, a first down!
…..3rd and inches. Two backs. Motion in. Whitow bulls to the Alabama 47!
……2nd and 2. Whitlow, bouncing, I don’t think he got there.
…..New set of downs. Trips left. Stidham gives to Whitlow, busting through for 8.
….Power to Whitlow, got about 4.
…..1st and 10 at the 27. Two backs, 3 wides. Give Whitlow, gets about 7.
…..Here is the boot! At the one, Igbinoghene, run down at the 28.
…..Auburn got a bit of its own medicine, on that last play. Auburn was still trying to get lined up, when Alabama jumped into an unbalanced line and quick snapped it.
…..PAT is good, and with 6:38 left in the first quarter, Alabama leads Auburn, 7-0.
…..3rd and 3 for the Tide. Bunched up again. Keeper, will power into the end zone.
…..2nd and 5 at the Auburn 9. Bunch, Give Jacobs, stopped for a couple.
…..A shovel pass, on that last one.
…..First and 10 at the Auburn 14. Three wides. Motion, pitch to Ruggs, and he gets 4 or so.
…..Quick pass to Ruggs, breaks a tackle, picks up 20.
…..I’m guessing Michigan’s defense won’t be number 2 in the nation, after today. Ohio State leads 62-39, late.
…..2nd and 10 Tide. That’s Auburn’s best cover corner out for a play, at least.
Auburn needs to play smart. These refs look like they will be calling a tight game.
…..Dean jogs off, perhaps got the wind knocked out while diving for the ball.
…..Jamel Dean with a non-contact injury?
…..Jeudy was well covered.
…..Tua in the gun at the Auburn 34. Bunch look. Fake, time, will overthrow.
…..Auburn is making just too many mistakes, to have a chance in this one.
I would have thought the butterfingers by receivers would have been corrected this late in the season
…..Well, upon slow motion review, Javaris Davis hit him, before the block in the back. Kick catch interference coming, at best.
…..Was blocked into Waddle, and drew the flag.
Dumpster is already on fire
…..That’s going to be a targeting, possibly.
…..Siposs will launch one, Auburn runs over Waddle, he’s down, and a flag.
…..3rd and 27. Stidham takes, and gives to Whitlow, got a yard to the nine.
…..2nd and 27. Two backs. Motion out. Screen, Ryan Davis will get nothing. Telegraphed that play…
…..At the eight, empty. A drop by Whitlow on the screen, nothing there anyway.
…..Ticky-tack calls, there.
Home cooking is in effect.
…..Backs Auburn up, way up.
…..And now they throw a flag on Malzahn, too.
…..Holding on Canella, will wipe out a score.
…..Shivers scores, but a flag, and a bama man down.
…..New set of downs. Half huddle. Motion out. Give on the sweep, Shivers, LOOOOOOOSEEEE!`
…..3rd and inches. Give Martin, turns the corner, to the 25!
…..2nd and 10. 4 wides. Stidham changing his play. Give Kam Martin, got about nine!
…..Two back pistol set. Davis in motion. GIve Whitlow, nothing at all.
…..Auburn needs to catch the ball, this drive.
…..They spot it at the ten.
…..4th and 5 for Alabama, and in comes the punting team. Bernier, will hit at the five, killed at the 12.
…..3rd and 5 for Bama. Rabbit package for Auburn. Blitz, lobbed up, too far, incomplete!
…..2nd and 5. Fake, rolls left, and knocked away by J. Davis!
…..New set of downs. Give Harris, will push up near midfield.
…..2nd and 7. Bunch set. Tua to throw. Finds Smith Jr. to the 45.
…..1st and 10 Bama. Give Harris, bangs for 3 off right tackle.
…..2nd and 5. Trips right. Fake, will dump to Jeudy, wide open. 13 yards.
…..From the 12 goes Bama. Pistol set. Give Harris, slashes for 5.
…..And a flag? Unnecessary roughness on Bama, Josh Jacobs.
Those balls have to be caught. Time for some defense.
…..An Auburn 3 and out. Siposs in to punt. Waddle will fair catch, at the 25. A 50 yard punt.
…..3rd and 10. Time.. and throws underneath, and nearly picked off.
…..2nd and 10. Motion out by Whitlow. Dumped to Davis, and he can’t hold on.
…..Auburn starts at the 25. Two back set, Whitlow and Cox. Stidham will fire to Williams on the slant, dropped.
A perfect afternoon for this game.
…..NO, ALabama is kicking off. I misunderstood, early. Bulovous kicks a touchback, for Alabama.
…..They typically scatter the auburn contingent in the upper decks.
I am looking for the Auburn fans. I have friends at the game.
…..Coin toss… Auburn calls tails.. it’s heads. Alabama wins the toss, and wants the football.
…..I loved hearing from all the players that they interviewed in Auburn history…
…..Teams are entering the field! Hostile noise abounds.
I really enjoyed the interview with Patrick Nix. His son is the real deal and will be on Auburn’s campus in January.
…..I’ve had the radio on since 12:30! I’ve also switched over to the antenna from the cable box.
Florida State has really fallen on hard times. What a difference from the National Championship team. It is time for me to mute CBS and listen to Rod and Stan.
…..In the afternoon SEC slots, we have wars for 2 states, Alabama and Tennessee. In Nashville, Tennessee and Vanderbilt are both 5-6. The winner will go to a bowl.
…..In the SEC, Georgia 45, Georgia Tech 14, final.
Florida 41, Florida State 14, under 5 minutes left in that one.
….CBS has announced a 2:39 PM Central kickoff, so, we are just 18 minutes away.
Ohio State could be picked for the ratings factor and they do have a better defense than Oklahoma. Of course, I do like watching Oklahoma play. War Eagle!
…..We are 20-30 minutes from kickoff. Time for 1 last snack break!
…..The committee let Ohio State in a couple of years ago, when they did not win the big ten. Passed over Penn State. The Buckeyes then got blanked by Clemson.
Ohio State will most likely be the favorite if they can win the Big 10.
…..Should Alabama beat Auburn, and lose to UGA, both UGA and Bama might get in, leaving both conferences out.
…..PAC-12 is already out, as their champion will have 3 losses, and Wazzo has 2.
…..A think a conference champion, and perhaps two, will get left out, this year. I figure on Clemson, Notre Dame and Bama going undefeated. That means either the Big 12 or Big 10 will get left out.
Ohio State is playing their best game of the season. The Ohio State players probably got tired of listening to media.
…..Cashed. A Buckeye screen to the two, and punched in from there. Ohio State 41, Michigan 19, late in the 3rd.
…..I had watched Shea Patterson, when he was at Ole Miss. Incredible athlete, but not the greatest accuracy or decision-making ability. And he just threw a hopeless ball into coverage for a Buckeye pick…
…..I had not scouted either team enough to have an opinion.
Most of the “talking heads” picked Michigan.
…..Ohio State blocks a punt, and Michigan is on the ropes. Buckeyes lead, 34-19 with about 4 minutes left in the 3rd.
…..Ohio State drove the length of the field, and kicked a field goal. They lead Michigan 27-19, midway through the 3rd.
…..Early SEC games are already pretty much decided. Georgia is pounding Georgia Tech, 45-7. Florida has opened up a 27-7 lead over Florida State.
…..Auburn was only 2 of 12 on 3rd down, against Liberty last week.
Auburn has little to lose today. I will be tracking the third and long situations. This will be Jarrett Stidham’s day to improve his NFL stock.
1972 was my first year at Auburn. The Auburn/Bama ticket was $2. Each student received a ticket packet when they signed up for classes.
…..1972 I was building one of those little Revell models. My parents were listening to the game in the next room, and I was kind of half listening. The game was not on TV. Alabama was a big favorite, and dominated the game, till those 2 blocked punts. House went nuts!
It is time for a coaching change at GT. Ohio State is playing much better than I expected. In 1972, I sold my student tickets and went deer hunting. I still regret my decision to this day.
…..And Alabama covered by 10 points by halftime.
Auburn was a 32 point underdog in 2012.
…..Warmups are beginning, in Bryant Denny, for the Iron Bowl.
…..Early SEC games are at the half, as well. Georgia leads Tech 38-7. Florida leads Florida State 13-7.
…..Buckeyes have to settle for the field goal. They lead Michigan, 24-19 at the half.
…..Ohio State is threatening, with just 15 seconds left in the half. Flags being thrown on every play, it seems like. Ohio State benefited from 2 very questionable flags on the Michigan secondary, then the Wolverines got beat over the top on a flag route. First and goal Buckeyes.
…..Patterson takes a sack on the 2 pointer, and the score remains 21-19. Michigan trying to chase lost points, early.
…..A wheel route not covered by Ohio State, and Michigan has closed it to 21-19.
…..Tigerwalk in Tuscaloosa is concluding. We are about 2 hours from the Iron Bowl kickoff.
…..Meltdown in the Shoe! Buckeyes muff the kickoff, and Michigan has it deep in Buckeye land!
…..Shea Patterson comes up with a miracle two-minute drive for Michigan. Had two balls that should have been picked off, but were not. A fade to the corner, and the Wolverines score just before half. Ohio State 21, Michigan 13.
…..Ohio State scores again, and leads Michigan 21-6. The Wolverine offense gives them little chance to make up that deficit. We’ve been seeing the narrative all year that Urban Meyer is finished, but it looks like the Buckeyes will once again be B1G champs, and in the playoff conversation.
…..Make that 13-0, Florida, midway through the 2nd quarter.
……Ohio State leads Michigan, 14-6.
…..Early SEC games are progressing more or less as expected. Georgia is pummelling Georgia Tech, 35-7 near the half. Florida leads Florida State 10-0.
…..I’m seeing headlines that Alabama is using helicopters to try and dry the field at Bryant Denny Stadium. That’s odd. an hour up the road here in the Tragic City, we only got about a half inch of rain, last night.
…..So, Michigan decides to go for it on 4th down near midfield, is late lining up, and has to call timeout. After the timeout, they mill around, confused as to where to line up, and then two linemen jump early. A discombobulated offensive mess…
…..Watching Michigan vs. Ohio State a bit, this morning. Not impressed with Michigan play-calling. They waste first and second down trying to run to the boundary, and end up in long yardage time and time again. Sound familiar?
…..Checking early SEC action… Georgia leads Georgia Tech in Athens, 14-7. Florida vs. Florida State is still scoreless, late in the 1st quarter in Tallahassee.
……On FOX, Washington State hosted Washington in the annual Apple Cup. That game, too, featured some early rain, but the precipitation switched quickly over to snow, and the white stuff fell heavily the rest of the game. The weather severely crippled the Mike Leach airraid attack, while the tight-end-heavy Chris Petersen offense found traction in the ground game. The Huskies won it, and their division, 28-15. With Washington State falling to 10-2, the PAC-12 is effectively eliminated from Playoff consideration.
…..Friday night was a channel-flipping treat. In Morgantown, West Virginia, a playoff elimination game was played, with more scoring than an old pinball machine. Oklahoma outlasted West Virginia, 59-56, to win their division. And no, there was no overtime. That was all in regulation.
…..Friday afternoon, Missouri thrashed Arkansas 38-0 in Columbia, putting the Razorbacks squarely in last place in the SEC, with a 2-10, 0-8 in the SEC mark. Big news from Co Mo was a torrential rainstorm during the game. Glad I wasn’t sitting through that cold weather drenching!
…..The altercation even involved coaches from both sides yelling at each other during and after the game. Presumably, the 3 Mississippi State players that were ejected will have to miss the first half of whatever bowl game the 8-4 Bulldogs play.
…..In SEC action, we had a couple of blowout games, but there was still drama. Mississippi State beat Ole Miss in the annual Egg Bowl, 35-3 in Oxford, Mississippi. The big news from that game was a bench clearing altercation, in which 4 players were ejected, and an unsportsmanlike conduct flag was thrown on every player on both sides.
…..And we are live! It has been a fun, and bizarre holiday weekend of college football, thus far.
….I don’t really keep up with the history of spreads. The Duval/rain/Florida game was 2001. Auburn won 23-20, to go to 5-1 on the season, before the wheels came off that year.
Just curious, when have we been larger betting underdogs? I was at the game at JHS when we beat #1 UF when Duvall hit the game winning FG with no time left in the rain. I think we were 16 pt “dogs”? What year was that and when have we been greater dogs? And second question, won?
About Acid Reign:.....Still making noise after all these years! Lifetime slacker, dreamer, and miscreant with a knack for calculation. I was born in the United State of Texas, but have spent the majority of my years here amongst the shaded hills of the Tragic City, enjoying glorious smog-enhanced sunsets. In a troubled county, I live in a little slice of paradise between the ridges of Red and Shades Mountains. I've been an obsessive Auburn football follower since the Punt-Bama-Punt days, and have seen a lot of great football on the Plains. This lazy shirker finally learned the value of hard work and persistence from the fine folks in Auburn, and enjoys his return visits immensely! Hobbies include guitar-playing (or really just making loud and weird noise on any sort of instrument or object), cooking, computers, tennis, and old-school pen and paper RPGs. I love getting together with a good drink, great family, and friends..... (Acid Reign is Track ’Em Tigers’ Senior Editor). View Profile →
