One Week to Go

By on August 23rd, 2013 in Featured Article, Football 19 Comments »

2Auburn6_crop_north- Nick MarshallGood Friday to you. I’m stepping into Derrick’s spot this week, while he takes a much needed breather. A week from now we’ll be marking off the tailgate spot. It’s hard to believe college football is here.

I can’t remember being this excited for a football season. I guess it’s because we didn’t have one last year. I know the season is here because I’ve started obsessing about Washington St. After last season, I’ll never underestimate any opponent. By next week this time, I’ll be convinced we can’t stay on the field with them. Yep, I’m ready…

I knew from the start it was a mistake. While driving through Birmingham this week, I let my curiosity get the best of me. I decided to tune into the “new” Paul Finebaum Show.

As the radio knob clicked to WJOX, the first words I heard from Paul were, “I’ve always maintained that the 2010 Auburn team was the weakest national champion we’ve had in the BCS era.”

I just laughed and turned the dial back to country music. Some things never change. I still can’t believe ESPN offered this ass-clown a national radio show. Thank God for Sirius-XM…

Speaking of Sirius, I’ve been listening to Gene Chizik now for several weeks. On the whole, he’s not bad. I’ve especially enjoyed his insight into the Johnny Manziel situation. If there’s anyone who has walked in the shoes of Texas A&M coach Kevin Summerlin, it’s Chizik.

You can catch the former Auburn coach throughout the day on most of the College Sports Nation programs on satellite radio…

That Nick Saban really cares about his players. After driving drunk and running the risk of killing innocent people, the Alabama coach really stuck it to DUI victim and current Alabama cornerback Geno Smith.

Saban lowered the hammer, giving Smith a one game suspension. That will show him. Give me a break. What a joke..

Johnny Manziel got a wakeup call from SEC coaches yesterday. Despite being the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, he was named second-team All-SEC behind Georgia’s Aaron Murray. At this point, I can’t really blame them.

Auburn Running back Tre Mason, center Reese Dismukes, kicker Cody Parkey and punter Steven Clark each received All-SEC second team recognition, and tight end C.J. Uzomah and defensive end Dee Ford were named to the third team by the SEC’s coaches…

Something I’m excited about that hasn’t gotten a lot of press is the weekly coaches’ luncheon being hosted by Gus Malzahn on Friday’s before home games. For $15 you can have lunch in the Letterman’s Lounge at Jordan-Hare Stadium and listen to Malzahn or one of his assistants preview the next day’s game.

Next week’s lunch is sold out, but tickets remain for the other home dates. Click here for more information…

Malzahn is bringing back the “real” Auburn Tiger Talk radio program. Airing from Bob’s Victory Grill (which looks awesome) across from Academy Sports in Auburn, Malzahn will again accept questions from callers, something Chizik got away from last year – for good reason. The show will air on Auburn Network affiliates across the South on Thursdays at 7 p.m. CT…

Auburn’s student section was recently named one of the 20 Best in College Football by ESPN. Tell us something we didn’t already know…

How about that weak ass schedule that Bama gets each year?

Not to sound like a LSU fan, but they actually play the better teams in the East.

Also, former Auburn great Patrick Nix will kick off his high school coaching career in Scottsboro this year. He’s been inspirational, and even has Updykes excited.

Look back at Bryant’s schedules while he was HC at bama. If SOS had been a team ranking factor back then bama would not have faired as well as they did.

Haven’t listened to that man in 2 years and don’t plan on starting back. I don’t see how he’ll make it as long as his callers are from AL for a nationwide show…….Listened to Gene a few times….not half bad and actually has some personality. I do love Jack Arute though!

I don’t see how Parkey and Clark can be on second team when each is up for an award and one was a finalist last year. Guess that’s the same as winning a Heisman trophy….no respect.

Got my e-mail this week for our tailgating menu so it’s time to get on the #GusDelorean and implement the #MarshallPlan !! Beyond excited at this point!! I already have my Orange and Blue glasses ready!

    War Eagle Errybody!

WOW! One week to go. A couple of friends and I are going to make the long trip to The Lovliest Village to be there for the start of the Gus Era. We were there for the start of the Dye Era and look where it went! I hope the first game is better than Dye’s first game. As for talk radio, I’ve never had much use for it here in Baton Rouge for obvious reasons. Not even sure if Finebaum is on here. I’d rather listen to my homemade CD’s. I’m really getting excited now and looking forward to a great time next weekend with 87000 of my best friends!

IT’S GREAT TO BE AN AUBURN TIGER !!!

    WAR EAGLE !!!

    GO BIG BLUE !!!

So glad Coach Gus is taking calls from the fans! Now if only the assistants will be able to take live calls on the post game radio show like they use to.

  5. AubieCE AubieCE says:

I would be stunned if Finebaum’s anti AU rants will go over well with a national audience
    Not that I would listen
I recommend Sirius XM Channel 91, all college sports, all the time, must more objective than PF’s clown show.

  6. MyAuburn MyAuburn says:

This last week before the opener is going to be tough. I can’t wait to see what Gus will put on the field but I do know one thing. It will be fun to watch.

    Finescum =fingernails on a chalkboard

Geno Smith, I would not have been surprised if Saban only gave him one half game suspension or none because “he is such a good kid” Facepalm!!

  7. AuburnMisfit AuburnMisfit says:

I would have thought that with the depth that Bama has, Saban could afford to cut Smith from the team.

  8. Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

At some point, Saban will start having serious discipline problems–at what cost, who knows. Considering that these collegiate football players are often the ONLY example that some kids have (or are willing to look up to), it is beyond reprehensible how Saban has chosen to handle Smith’s DUI.

  9. Tigerstripe Tigerstripe says:

Listening to Finebaum talk is like being a judge at the annual Tijuana Casa Grande Mexican Restaurant Fart Contest…

Saban’s response to Geno’s DUI is a sign that exceptions are being made on an individual basis. That spoke volumes to players and recruits. Precedence has now been set; DUI, although illegal, not that bad if your a bama athlete and Daddy Saban will just make it go away. Camelot is beginning to show signs of decay…

I still like Chizik, he’s a good guy, just got complacent and didn’t handle success as well as he handled tribulations.

  10. audude audude says:

Jay, you are too funny: ” I still can’t believe ESPN offered this ass-clown a national radio show”…I’ve never heard ass clown before and it makes me laugh just tying it!

    See y’all next week.

    WDE!

Sad to admit that I listened to about ten min of Paawwll yesterday. He made some reference that since the show is now affiliated with the SEC that he can’t bash coaches anymore. Since that was the only part of his show not dedicated to moron callers I assume his decline will be swift. In fact it was probably the ten most awkward minutes of radio I’ve ever heard, unless you count every time Wes Neighbors opens his mouth on the local show here in Huntsville (I actually like the guy ok despite him being a bammer, but he is simply incompetent as a radio host).

  12. uglyjoe says:

I think I will make a conscious effort to work “ass-clown” into a sentence on a daily basis.

  13. Acid Reign Acid Reign says:

…..I’ve been talk radio free for several weeks, now. My wife got me a new car stereo, speakers and all. Amazing stuff, these days in audio. A 32 gig thumbdrive plugged into that thing holds more music than a console full of CDs or tapes!

  14. restless6 says:

Ass Clown and Bammer go together like peanut butter and jelly.

  15. LSU Jonno says:

So is today black Friday for Home Depot?

I imagine a lot of honey-do’s are getting taken care of this weekend. I know mine are!

    • Acid Reign Acid Reign says:

……Ever-present plumbing issues on an 80 year old house, and of course shin-high grass in the wettest summer in many years. Usually, it rains all weekend, and I’m off the hook on the mower. Not this weekend, or so say the weather gods.

…..And I’m also hoping to find one our local farmer’s markets still open tomorrow. They tend to disappear when school starts, but I’m craving one more round of fresh okra…

  16. AUJTJarhead AUJTJarhead says:

Finebaum is the “Jerry Springer” of sports radio. I also doubt his “stirring the pot” schtick will play well to a national audience. He will only add to the “dumb Southerner” mentality if he allows the genetically challenged callers to continue.

  17. dabble says:

Pawwwwwlllllllllll. It sounds like the Dr saying, you got the worst case of Hemeroids he ever did see. And one day he will be gone.
As my pappy used to say, this too shall pass. Just not fraking soon enough.
