National Signing Day 2018—Live Thread
National Signing Day 2018 is here!
Okay, I hear you loudly and, to some extent, agree. The Early Signing Period has stolen some luster from what used to be “the” National Signing Day. To be honest, I have mixed emotions. Yes, I like the fact that Auburn recruits can sign and no longer be pestered by others. But, as AubTigerman alluded, I miss the “circus”, also.
But, have no fear. There are still some unanswered questions that by the end of the day will be answered.
Work has a knack for really getting in the way, and this year my job has reared its ugly head.
Thankfully, we have Zach Taylor (@best5zach) at the controls today for the Track ‘Em Tigers live thread.
And, during the slower periods, feel free to hit Zach up about which jig or lure, or maybe, which strength of line to use to catch that monster bass! (Yeah, I don’t fish so if the former makes no sense well…)
Please jump in and keep Zach company—I will pop in as I can.
Let’s hope Auburn can sign a couple that we, as fans, don’t expect!
Track ‘Em Tigers will be back tomorrow with our National Signing Day 2018 summary that will include all signees plus with any other tidbits we can dig up.
….Auburn loses on a gutless call by the SEC refs, 81-80.
…..Auburn has just three seconds. Auburn to inbound. Heron with the three, no. Auburn loses.
….Clock adjustment, 3.2 seconds left.
…..Second… rimmed out, and Auburn calls time! 2.4 seconds left! Auburn trails, 81-80.
…..First free throw, Wilson will hit. 81-80 Aggies.
….That is just a terrible call.
….They put time back on, 3.5 seconds, timeout Auburn.
….Call: on Auburn. And Wilson will go to the line.
….Long, long conversation by the refs.
….Game is tied at 80, with just two seconds left.
…..Call from the zebras…
….Review… on the replay there was NO CONTACT!
…..Dribble drive Aggies, and a foul on Okeke. 2 seconds left.
….Spencer HIts, 80-79. Aggies call their last timeout. Ten seconds remain.
….Wow. Spencer fouled, with 10 seconds left in the ballgame. A&M leas, 80-78.
…..It is halftime. Auburn trails, 46-36. Not looking too great, at home against the Aggies.
….36 seconds left in the half, Auburn trailing by 8.
….Wilson heads to the locker room.
….Aggies called for a double T for mouthing off, Heron hits both, then a steal and a jam! Auburn trails now, 44-36!
….Tigers down 12, 44-32, with about a minute left in the half. Auburn is out of synch in all phases.
….Harper fouled on a 3, gets free throws. Hits all three, Tigers trail, 34-30, with 4:06 left in the half.
….Aggies by seven, 32-25, as Auburn is having problems on both ends.
….And the Tigers throw it away.
….Shot clock violation! Auburn’s ball, with a tie game!
….This game is tied, at 25, with an injury timeout. Williams is down and grimacing in pain for the Aggies, after an altercation down low.
….Aggies are much bigger and more powerful than Auburn. However, they are turnover-prone, and not particularly quick on defense. There is opportunity for Auburn to work on them, if the shots fall. Defensively, Auburn has no answer for the pass inside, where the Tiger defenders are a lot smaller.
…..Now Brown with a dunk! Aggies call time, with 8:03 left in the half. Aggies lead, 25-23.
….Brown for three!
….And McLemore walks. A&M has it back.
….Tigers down 5, with 9.5 left in the half. Tigers taking bad shots, committing fouls.
….Auburn retakes the lead off a steal, and a three by McLemore! 18-17!
….My mistake on the venue. Auburn is hosting TAMU, in Auburn Arena. We have a timeout with 11:55 left in the first half. The Aggies lead Auburn, 15-13. Aggies have been physical inside.
….We are nearing tip-off in College Station. However, I have dishes to get done. Will be putting food up, and cleaning, at least for the first five minutes. It has been a great, if misty day here in the Tragic City!
…..Incidentally, I will likely drop some more comments in this space, when Auburn tips off against Texas A&M tonight at 8:00 PM Central Time.
…..SEC Network has Auburn currently at 12th, with Bama at 6th, and UGA 1st in the nation. I hate to see Auburn finish outside the top ten for the first time in a while, but Auburn has built so much depth at a lot of positions, that opposing recruiters can sell more immediate playing time for recruits.
……Judging from how Georgia has done recruiting the past couple of seasons, and Alabama’s decline today, how much credit should Kirby get for all those number one Bama classes over the past decade?
….Agree on Mullen at Florida. He gets a lot out of his players, like him or not.
…..The good news on the offensive line is that we have J. B. Grimes coming back. He’s made a career out of taking 3 star linemen, and turning them into NFL draft picks. I’d rather have a successful 3-star, than a 5-star lineman that doesn’t develop.
Kind of disappointing day overall, but we did finish #3 in the SEC, which is pretty good – usually LSU beats us out. And we did hold on to all of our top guys, and had only one decommit the entire cycle (some LB who ended up with Louisville). So, good job with the coaching staff there. OL was the weakest link. Herb Hand leaving didnt help matters, but recruiting on the OL was struggling long before he left. I’m not convinced that Hand is as good a recruiter as he gets credit for.
Actually, come to think of it, this was a very good class compared with years past with every position group other than OL. Seriously? Just two OL commits for the entire cycle, and neither are considered blue-chip prospects?
not that anyone else is still here, but Richard Gouraige just went to UF … Mullen has done good … he just might keep Kirby busy … at least a little
Caleb Johnson just signed … thanks Zach … great job today
Well folks. I’m checking out for now.
And Bama is ranked #9 in the 247 sports composite right now. Both Bama and LSU have had huge misses this year. It has been a disaster for LSU, and for sure Bama is very unaccustomed to missing on so many recruits.
So Copeland chooses Gators and his mom, who was wearing Bama gear, stood up and left him on LIVE TV.
I have always had the impression that UGA getting Justin Fields was the difference-maker in this class. UGA’s recruiting didn’t start to really explode until after Fields signed. Watching that in action, I have high hopes for AU with Bo NIx playing the role of lead recruiter. Nix seems to be a legit 5-star and he seems to have significant pull with other recruits in his class.
UGA has 7 of the top 20 recruits in the nation. Wow.
Will probably get busted for using my phone but guy at work says Chase has chosen LSU.
Huge lull for the next 45 minutes.
…..I’ll be back later in the afternoon. Gotta hit the grocery store and cook some food, this evening. We ran out over my work weekend, and I was thawing hamburger, and skillet cooking it with Publix frozen Japanese veggies and ramen noodles, to get us by.
…..He’s gotta choose between the Malzahn offense or the Mullen one. I would point out that Auburn has put more linemen in the NFL than MSU, over the past decade.
Could Auburn land RICHARD GOURAIGE? He is an overwhelming favorite to land in Gainesville. But, he was at Auburn five days ago and tweeted #WDE. That would really smooth over every concern as he is the 7th best OT in the nation.
It’s a well-rounded group with some solid players.
…..Line issues aside, I do like Auburn’s depth in this class. They’ve scouted well, and have guys coming in that are likely to contribute. Auburn traditionally builds their good teams with lots of those 3 and 4 stars that develop into dominant players.
USC continues to have an embarrassment of riches and the inability to do anything with it. The Trojans are 12th, just ahead of Auburn, with only 15 signees, the fewest in the top 20. They do that with three 5-stars.
Auburn, Notre Dame, and FSU are the only top 10-ish teams without a 5-star signee.
Alabama still holding a top ten with only 18 signees, tied with the fewest with Clemson.
…..Indeed. Offensive linemen don’t get the attention skill players get, and so most of those guys went ahead and signed early. Auburn got left out, there.
One thing the early signing period has done is point out how quick a team can get in trouble in their recruiting.
…..You can count me among the worried about the offensive line. We needed to pick up at least one blue-chipper this season, and didn’t. A couple of years down the road, Auburn will probably be putting a true freshman or two on the field on the line. Auburn did that in 2011 and 2012, and took a lot of SEC blowouts during that time.
….The earlier part of this decade had Auburn linebackers making tackles falling backwards. That changed, with Steele and Travis Williams. If you can’t rock a runner backwards or string him out to the boundary, you won’t play linebacker at Auburn.
Auburn has slipped out of the Top 10.
An extra 30 pounds is going to be needed to blow up SEC backs behind the line.
On thing I think he will have to work on is following his instinct. Frequently he was in the right place, but he held up at the last second instead of selling out on his instincts and blowing up plays.
He played outside LB for Valdaosta, frequently coming off the edge. He did this very well, making him that hybrid edge rusher. However, as Acid Reign said….size is an issue. In fact, not only is it an issue in taking on OL, but it kept him from really crushing players in HS.
…..200 pounds is light, for a linebacker. He’ll need a couple of years in the weight room.
…..I will say that the hands improved dramatically as the season went on. With every receiver returning, let’s hope they start better, this coming season.
Let’s talk Zakoby McClain.
6’1″ | 200 LBS | OLB
It’s a shame, because we will continue to see the same product.
…..Getting rid of Kodi and bringing an expert would require Coach Malzahn to give up some control, and he’s not going to do that.
Auburn has not made a commitment to developing the WR position in almost a decade and a half. They had a chance this year and didn’t pull the trigger.
I cannot blame him one bit, but this should be a shot across the bow for Auburn fans. Jamies Winston is the last top player from Alabama not to go instate. Alabama is loaded. Auburn cannot do anything remotely like Alabama or Clemson. Clemson is a sure-bet to send a guy like Ross to the NFL in three years.
Ross going to Clemson.
…..Saw an interesting debate on Alabama’s quarterback situation for this year. I can only think that having two really talented quarterbacks battling for the starting job is a good thing. Alabama has a new offensive coordinator, and that will be a big wild card in the battle, too.
Obviously Auburn is taking Ross if he wants to come, but at that point, it has to be OL.
I don’t have any of the insider services, so someone has the info on just how many we can sign.
Well, we discussed earlier that Fuqua committed to Auburn but didn’t sign. He doesn’t really have any other offers. The thought process is, Auburn may move some pieces around.
23 in the class … how many spots can we use if there’s someone still out there the coaches want?
Seth Williams is a solid looking WR. He already has some of the finish that Auburn will need from an incoming player. He has good size. I like his instincts with the ball and finishing runs after catches.
…..I had raised eyebrows when they got rid of offensive coordinator Matt Canada. I thought his offense was inventive, and really took advantage of the people they had.
In my opinion, LSU couldn’t have done worse with managing this program if they would have tried.
23 so far.
…..I was watching the SEC Network thing, and wow. LSU has been decimated by graduation and early departures. And, they are going to be installing a new offense, this spring to boot. They will be really young, next year.
Late to the party. How many is in total class at present?
He has a good motor too.
With that said, Schwartz has terrific vision and blazing cover speed. That’s why I’d like to see him at free safety.
Even a guy that fast, covering him and his speed is just adding an extra step for today’s Elite SEC corner. Without a busted coverage, you aren’t running past anyone. And, if you can’t contest a catch, you won’t score much.
He is used as a gadget player and we all know how Gus likes that. I, like many, hope that we move away from gadget players and more on multi-purpose. The ultimate misdirection is the ability to use the same guys to do anything. I don’t think Schwartz is that guy.
With great top end speed, maybe he’s an Onterio McCaleb kind of guy for kickoffs and end arounds
I like him better as a free safety than anywhere. In watching his highlights, you don’t see any contested catches. Some of that is likely because he doesn’t make any and some of that is his speed is used on straight go-routes.
I read that he’s very elusiveness in space.
6-0 170 and that is generous. He is called possibly the fastest recruit in the country. HE runs a 10.15 100.
Let’s talk Anthony Schwartz
I was blown away with his speed versus other big men. UA put him as a D-lineman. The issue became, if they got a hand on him, he was de-cleated because of pad level and leverage issue. That’s just knowledge, but it takes time. Could he be a buck? Can he learn coverage and call? Maybe. Again, a year or more.
Doing a great job Zach…. but you need to use your influence to pull in an O-lineman.
Thanks on Jbiunor… was just curious
Auburn is getting on really thin ice with OL. There are virtually no OGs out there and the list of OTs grows thin by the second.
No real beef at all. It’s a question of where will he play? Dude looks like a phenomenal athlete.
Just wondering Zach, what is your beef with Richard Jibunor?
UGA now has 13 Top 100 recruits.
Yes, I think so. Sorry.
A lock for bama?
The way UGA is dominating, Bama will put the full court press to maintain
Think he is a lock.
Yes inquiring minds want to know (about Miller).
Think we have a shot at Ross or is he a lock for Bama?
ugh …Georgia may get #1 class … don’t even like the sound of that!
There can be no doubt that with UGA’s ascension in recruiting, Auburn will continue to have the countries hardest November.
and justyn ross, of course
up next is WR Ja’Marr Chase
Walker chooses UGA. That may solidify the Dogs as the number one team.
A guy like this is going to spend a year or two learning, most likely.
I think there is an outside shot he might get a look at TE. But, here’s the thing. He has incredible speed and instincts. He is easily manipulated due to pad level and his speed is used against him by savvy OLs. As a LB, it’s a stretch to think he could learn the amount of football needed to possibly call the game. Could he a hybrid? No question.
He is projected as an LB and recruited by T-Will. He played D-end/Buck in UA camps.
But, he did almost everything else in his limited time playing football in high school.
What is Auburn going to do with Jibunor? He is the most enigmatic player on the list for Auburn.
Yes early signing period has taken some of the excitement out of today but enjoy reading your quick nalysis on these guys Zach.
Reviewing Coynis Miller, Jr tape from UA All-American camp: He’s really got things to work on. If the OL gets their hands inside on him, he cannot break free. He does damage with a first step and swim move. He struggles with pad level. Still, elite size but it isn’t good weight.
Man, the early signing period has murdered the flow of today.
We’ve seen this game before. Bama likely will sneak back up.
Suprising about Uga passing UAT
Still no word on Walker.
A quick look at his limited film shows good hands but not elite speed nor route running.
Shedrick Jackson from Hoover, had only two other SEC offers: Missouri and Mississippi State. He’s another interesting prospect because he has that size at 6-2, 200 pounds. This is the kind of guy that could go play the other size of the ball.
Auburn has slipped from No. 8 to No. 10 in team rankings. UGA has overtaken Alabama thanks to some 5-star flips.
No news on Anderson.
So Auburn has only three, three-star guys. Two are offensive linemen. Auburn either believes they will sign a big name or they are in big trouble.
Had a couple of minutes so checking in. Any news related to Calvin Anderson? He is under no obligation to sign today as a graduate transfer (Rice) but I’m sure AU would hold a spot for him.
Good point … on the other hand, he may be holding for a fully scholly from someplace else … thanks
You have to think a guy like that might be willing to gray shirt. Auburn, with 23 signed LOIs and really no blue chip guys at OL, has to be thinking about options right now.
@Zach … I noticed Fuqua was the only commit shown at 247 that had not signed … I wonder if they have asked him to hold a bit to see what happens with others?
Fuqua only had two offers: one from Auburn and one from Mississippi State. He had interest in Alabama, but the interest wasn’t there from the Tide. That’s an interesting thing. If Saban thought he could take that elite size and make a player, he would jump on a kid with that size.
DB Kolbi Fuqua, Cordova, Ala. has committed to Auburn. Still waiting for signed LOI. Fuqua is a 3 star athlete. But, he has elite size. Projected at DB, this is a massive player for the position.
A quick look at his highlights show a very Kerryon-esq player.
Harold Joiner is going to be an interesting storyline to watch. Auburn’s backfield has a lot of competition in it already, but Joiner at 6-3 220 could really shake things up.
The other blue chip OL signed with OSU. Not that it was surprising, but cuts Auburn’s chances of a real blue chipper.
in other news … Patrick Surtain signed with uat versus the popular home state pick LSU … ouch … top CB in the country
This would be a massive pick up for Auburn. Walker is a blue chip linebacker at 6-3, 220. He is ranked as the 38th player, nationally.
He has been committed to the Tide for 8 months, but took an official to Auburn as his last visit.
QUAY WALKER is set to decide next. He is expected to go to the Tide but has Auburn listed. He is an OLB from CORDELE, GA
Very interesting that Auburn lost two players to Nebraska, although it is reported Auburn did not offer Cam Taylor.
Auburn desperately needs a blue chip OL. Could Auburn flip one of the remaining ones?
With Auburn’s depth at WR and the losses on the back end of the defense, I don’t see how McCreary could make any movement.
Thanks Zach on the info on Miller.
He comes in at 118 Nationally, 3rd best player in Alabama and 8th best position player. At 6-2 290, he is already a massive man. He chose Auburn over the best schools in the country, Auburn continues to gain ground in Alabama for the states best athletes.
Still getting all the info on the thread.
9:15 a.m. CT – Defensive tackle Coynis Miller has signed a NLI with Auburn.
Miller was one of the top names on the board.
Good to see a defensive lineman sign but where are those O’Linemen?
When I get things caught up, I’ll start looking.
Zach or Tigerz, Do you think McCreary could play any offense?
Boom … Coynis Miller DL
Here is his info from Rivals: https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2018/anthony-schwartz-184508
Thanks Zach…. Great news
HE is 6-foot, 175 pounds and had 21 offers from the likes of Florida and Baylor
Wide receiver Anthony Schwartz has signed a NLI with Auburn. He is the 162nd best player in the nation, 31st best player in Florida and 28th best WR in the nation

McCreary good pickup. He’s only a 3 star but I see where he played QB in high school on offense and CB on defense and had 8 interceptions and 14 pass breakups, and 100 tackles his senior year.
20 in the stable, now lets see some Big Uglies!

Matthew Hill – WR 6-2 185
Arryn Siposs is a punter comes in at 6′ & 200lbs
If Zach or someone could give brief bio on signers it would help. Maybe position, height, weight, and stars?
Thanks Tigerz and PMT.
@hello2196 … I count 19 signed
I believe Joiner’s letter make’s it 19.
How many in the class so far?
Those three and, now, Harold Joiner
How many letters of intent have come in thus far this morning? … only 3 guys listed below.
Thanks Tigerz for the update on Jibunor!
Good morning all. Looking for a strong top 10 finish today as I head off for appointments. Will be checking back from time to time. War Eagle!
Richard Jibunor at buck is now an Auburn Tiger
@ATL_AU_FAN … not sure why Siposs wouldn’t have 4 years? Seems like others have played professionally in a 2nd sport and had 4 years. His bio at auburntigers.com doesn’t say much other than 5 years pro soccer.
Followed by Matthew Hill at WR …
War Eagle and Good Morning! Thanks again, Zach for stepping in on short notice! And yes, Tigerz, Arryn Siposs has submitted his LOI. Does anyone know what the eligibility for him is? Not sure how that works since he has already played in Australia.
Looks like the Australian punter was the first to sign
Would be shocked if we sign J Ross, I think it’s Bama on that one. But, I could be wrong. Hope so. I live in Smith Station and have seem him play at Central High. He’s as good as advertised
Going back to the O line … Stidham really seems to get rattled when he spends time on his back. It is absolutely critical we have a decent line. To me, it’s a key to the season.
LSU has always caused me to shake my head. I lived in Baton Rouge for 10 years and mental strength at the head coach has never been their strong suit. Les and Coach O can definitely recruit and inspire tho.
We aren’t far from where we’ve been the last few years in rankings but i thought we’d absorb some of LSUs elite recruits.
Offensive line isn’t just a concern in this cycle but for next year. I went back and looked at Auburns record when losing that kind of experience. It’s not good.
War Eagle and g’mornin Zach. Sure, I would love for Auburn to land Justyn Ross but we’re probably okay at receiver. The area I’m worried about is the offensive line.
Hey everyone. Just checking in early. All eyes are on Justyn Ross today. Otherwise, likely to be a boring day for Auburn fans.
