Not to be Outdone…

By on February 16th, 2013 in Member Post 5 Comments »

We talked in “CHANGE” HAS NEVER SOUNDED SO GOOD!” about how bama already has a staff in place. And I mentioned in another article, “New Man on Campus?” that Auburn recently started hiring its off field staff.

Well, it seems that bama is sweetening the pot.

Bama and Nick Saban has hired back Kevin Steele.

Do you remember Kevin? No? Well you should.

He was the DC for Saban when he came to bama in 2007 and 2008. He left there and went to Clemson as the DC. Unfortunately for him, in 2012 when Clemson played West Virginia his defense gave up 7o odd points. After that he resigned his job.

He should be on the mind of every Auburn fan… because in 1995 he coached at the Carolina Panthers and got into a heated altercation with Kevin Greene.  I say heated because Greene nearly used him to pick up the trash on the field. It was supposedly caught on film.  But I am getting off topic… man the internet is SO amazing!!

But the person who got the biggest job is Kerry Stevenson, who is hired as the “director of player development”. What is Stevenson’s MOJO that gets him a position that is better than Steele’s and working for the arguably most prestigious man in college coaching since dare I say the name in the same sentence…  da bahr? Well, Kerry has served as the head football coach at Vigor High School in Prichard, Ala for the last ten years.

Do you see a pattern here?

Bama and AU are getting guys who have ties to high schools.

I made the comment on that article that guys from the big ten are starting to pay attention… especially guys like Urban Meyer.  Look for other teams to start doing this…

Saban is responsible for what will be college football’s greatest inovation since the forward pass. This second layer of coaching staff will also help break down film but you can bet your bottom dollar that their primary function is scouting high school, jr. high school, and even grade school talent.

Absolutely true. That is why he knows what he’s got. And why we get a guy and he falls apart mid stride.

I’m not saying Saban’s system is infallible…. just look at the four that recently got arrested, I don’t think any system besides a man’s integrity and home upbringing can determine that… and depending on who they are running with or has around as “friends”… even that has been known to slip.

He knows who can produce. And that is something that AU has normally depended upon the kid to do.

      Some do and some don’t.

I think we will start seeing a change in a year or two. Heck, Gus might see the change almost immediately. I will be watching this closely. I think it is that important.

Agreed. This is a model that is being copied nation wide. Those that ignore it, or can not afford it, will be left in the dust.

….and on that note, my Rivals account and Auburn Undercover report that Malzahn has hired two more outstanding high school coaches to be off field staffers for Auburn. One is former AU standout and former NFLer Dell McGee. He has amassed a 88-19 record at Carver HS in GA. the other Brent Dearman, former Vigor OC.

Gus will not be left behind.
