Well he’s gone. Auburn’s star running back, Tre Mason, has declared for the NFL Draft. The SEC Offensive Player of the Year and Heisman finalist said that although he was blessed to play for Coach Malzahn and the Tigers, he plans to move on to the next level.

You really can’t blame him. Running backs take a big pounding and that’s why most don’t have long pro careers. As hard as Mason runs, an injury could occur in his senior year which could greatly hamper his draft status.

Besides, Tre has already given so much to the Auburn program. He holds the school record for most touchdowns in a season (24) and the  most all-purpose yards in a season with 2,374.

He made seven All-American Teams this year while breaking Bo Jackson’s single-season rushing record with 1,816 yards for a 5.7 yards per carry average. In addition, the tougher the defense the harder Tre seemed to run. He had some of his best games against Georgia, Alabama, Missouri, and Florida State. In making the announcement, Tre said, “It’s always been a dream and I’m a dream chaser.”

Mason is projected to be a third round pick. Running Back-U should be alright next year with the depth at the position and with a proven staff that knows how to coach ’em up. But the Auburn Family will surely miss him. We’ll miss his drive, his desire, and his love for Auburn University.

War Eagle Tre! Good luck and Thanks for the memories!

    Amen. Thanks.

Wish he would get his degree, but totally respect the decision.
    Good luck to you Tre.

Damn it! I thought he might stay. Oh well… he will do great in the NFL. We sure will miss him. Good luck, Tre.

  3. win4au says:

Do you think Recean Thomas will get red-shirted? Saw some highlight film of that kid… Wow! Future definitely looks bright! WDE

If he’s as good as they project, he could play next year. Although right now, it looks like Peyton Barber could emerge as the front runner.

  4. Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

Gonna miss watching that guy run the ball in an Auburn uniform. I think we were just beginning to see how good he can really be.

  5. Acid Reign Acid Reign says:

…..Good luck Tre! We enjoyed watching you at Auburn! I’m still ticked off at Mason’s lack of carries in 2012. He’s a great back!

…..That said, I don’t think Auburn will slow down with Artis-Payne and Corey Grant returning. Plus there’s Jonathan Ford who could come back from the defensive side, and word is that Peyton Barber was a scout-team standout this past fall while redshirting. Plus there’s more speedy talent committed!

  6. MyAuburn MyAuburn says:

Roc Thomas has been called Bo Jackson like. I doubt that but he seems like the real deal and could play a lot as a freshman.

Good luck Tre, hope you tear up the NFL.

Gives me a reason to watch the NFL draft closer.

  7. MyAuburn MyAuburn says:

SI just named Tre to its All Bowl team at running back. Couldn’t agree more.Greg Robinson was also on it.

  8. Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

Love that Tre Mason!! Go get it, baby!! You will always be an Auburn Tiger and we will always appreciate your tremendous accomplishments!!

    War Eagle,

  9. Tiger 55 says:

I believe Tre will be a fine NFL running back. He’s got good body-lean, balance and enough power to get the job done. Plus he has that courage and desire to excel which you must have to be competitive in that league. I wish Tre all the best and thank him for the great memories he left us with during his time at Auburn.

Thanks, Tre. You are a true Auburn man.

  11. sparkey sparkey says:

I know people will claim false on this, but I said before Mason every played a down here at Auburn he would be a special player. I was not surprised by anything he did while he was here. I saw it in him long before now. He was a special player and he is the epitome of what it is to be an Auburn man. The kid played hard every game in 2012. That told me more about him than anything this season did. He kept playing hard no matter the score and no matter the feelings in the stadium. He played hard and he was always giving it his all even if he was the only one on the team who was giving it his all. War Eagle to Mr. Mason!

Now, as crazy as I’ll seem saying this, we have an opportunity to be better on offense in 2014. I know one thing I’d like to see from our offense: STOP running the ball up the middle every time you get a first down. Sometimes, a quarterback carry or a play action deep ball to Coates is okay you know? Roc Thomas is more talented than Tre Mason. Does that mean he’ll be better? Only time will tell because you can’t coach heart. If Thomas does have the same size of a heart that Mason does, he’ll be one of the all time Auburn greats.

  12. tigertracker says:

War Eagle Tre. When I saw you run that kick back for TD in 2011 there was just something about the intensity and fearlessness with which you ran that told me you’d be special. I recall begging before the ole miss game last year to put you and only you behind Prosch and ground and pound even if we only threw 5 passes in the game. That dang near happened against arky and tenn this year and it exposed to the nation the monster runner most of us knew you to be. So WAR TRE EAGLE and don’t be a stranger on the Plains!

Now who’s the next man up? This offseason and fall camp is going to intense and that’s probably understated. I read somewhere that mason said barber was probably the best back of all of them. It may be in this video, but didn’t watch since I read all the pertinent quotes yesterday. Then I read where CAP says “I won’t lose it” referring to the starting job. Grant returns. Jonathan Ford* probably returns from defensive exile. Roc Thomas assuming he doesn’t pull a yeldon will be in the mix. The pettway kid from prattville I think is committed too and for some reason I’m thinking I’m missing one other and maybe more! #stableproblems

    * I was so mad about the running into kicker at the game, but after seeing replay he should’ve dove at the kicker instead of putting a hand up. Easily would have blocked the kick negating the penalty right? But easy to say when I’m not the one risking getting kicked in the head or the junk! Seeing how close he was I apologize for being mad at him.
