Hugh Freeze Accepts Liberty Head Coach Position

By on December 7th, 2018 in Football, News 10 Comments »

Former Ole Miss Coach Hugh Freeze has accepted the head coaching position at Liberty University. He had been under consideration for the offensive coordinator position at Auburn. Freeze’s daughter attends Auburn, and for a short while it looked like he might consider joining his old friend Gus Malzahn on the Plains.

He was the number one choice of our members taking a poll here at Track ‘Em Tigers. In a 10-man field he garnered close to two thirds of the votes. Liberty has scheduled a 2:00 p.m. ET press conference to introduce him as the Flames new coach.

Known as a good offensive mind, Freeze was 39–25 in Oxford and was the first Ole Miss coach to take the Rebels to four straight bowl games, including two New Year’s Day Six games. His 10–3 record in 2015 was the first 10-win season for the Rebels in 34 years.

The wait at Auburn to see who Malzahn will bring on board continues. Will the new man be in place before the Tigers’ December 28th bowl game against Purdue?

I'm disappointed but I can't say I'm surprised. Now lets get Mike Yurich in here.

As much as I think we really, really needed him and he would do a great job…

…its for the best. Hiring him would draw even more attention to the program that is already being clowned around the nation.

Its also eye opening that Auburn was in need of a quarterback and an OC. While Auburn would have been excited to land Bryant and freeze, it would be a bandaid solution to a much larger issue that has to be faced.

Not getting these two will likely make fans understand the real state of the program.

This is looking like Kodi Burns will get the title.

  4. Jonathon Jonathon says:

Maybe a good move to keep himself apart from our sinking ship… until next year when we fire Gus and offer him the HC position. Whomever Gus hires now has got to see their stint as a one year project which will only be flushed out with Gus’ firing. ‘One year contracts only.’ Smart guys will stay far, far away. Kodi might be the guy. Internal hire, won’t be a long term choice, easily replaced after next year.

  5. I ‘m hoping this can be completed before the December 19th early signing period – and sooner if possible. Recruits need to know who the coaches are for next year.

Taking the least experienced member of the staff, at the lowest salary, putting him in a job way over his head and doubling or tripling his salary… Sounds like standard operating procedure to me….

Our football program is a dumpster fire.

The only way I see this scenario ending is malzahn by himself. No smart and talented OC will risk coming to Auburn at this point with only being offered a 1-year contract, and I don't see malzahn paying money out of his pocket for extra years.

Instead, I see us getting a QB coach, or promoting from within (here's looking at you Kodi Burns) so that malzahn can just call the plays himself and not point fingers at anyone else moving forward. That's what the powers that be want.

It's just terrible that we've gotten to this point and I hate it for the Auburn family. Maybe we will come out of all this okay after all… We can hope right?

Let's make sure to tune in and root on our men's basketball team tomorrow night against the Dayton flyers! WDE always and forever!

Just as in the Edward John Smith debacle in 1912, Auburn University President Steven Leath — over a 100 years on — is responsible for having run that which he commands headlong into a disaster.

What Mr. Leath is doing right now, from his comfortable, well appointed corner office at Auburn are actions so futile in the face of impending catastrophe, that they would be the equivalent of Capt. Smith having spent his last 2 hours and 40 minutes on this planet, “Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.”

This man Leath is an incompetent administrator and a monumental embarrassment. No way this man Leath should have allowed to start “renegotiating” Malzahn’s contract. Not after what he did to put Auburn in this mess last December. Didn’t Leath just — for no good reason anybody knows — give Malzahn that contract a year ago? H-E-L-L-O-!-!-!

There is something rotten in Auburn right now, and most all of us by now have come around to that fact.

If there is any justice left in all of Lee County, Mr. Leath should be brought up on charges of malfeasance and let the chips fall where they may. Mr. Leath’s rubber stamps on the BOT should be shown the door. Pronto.

Jay Jacobs got out of town scott free. Don’t let the same thing happen with this guy, Steven Leath.

Step up and do your jobs, Ladies and Gentlemen of the Auburn BOT. You too, Allen Greene.

P.S. At least Capt. Smith had the honor and decency to go down with the ship. WDE!

Assistant Offensive Coordinator Chip Lindsey jumped ship because (a) he’s smart and (b) he was tired of taking the beating for an inept offense that he had nothing to do with (Google Chip Lindsey + Arizona Offense). Freeze, Kodi B, the ball boy, it doesn’t matter, Gus calls the plays – always has, always will.

Drama, turmoil, controversy; Auburn seems to always be in the middle of it lately. How much worse will this get before it gets better? We’re all fixing to find out (again).

And oh yea, it might be wise to start putting together a short list for DC as well.
