Holland why?

By on September 22nd, 2013 in Member Post 10 Comments »

Why do we keep playing Holland? He continues to cost us points. Last night he was reached on both long runs basically giving LSU 14 points. Guess how many we lost by? LSU obviously watched film and picked on him every time he was in the game. Please let me know what some of your thoughts are on this.

He is the best knowledgeable linebacker we have. No one else can read defenses like him and adjust the defense unit.

It should point to you how far AU is behind the competition.

I think he’s a little slow for the position but he’s football smart. according to Ellis Johnson during fall camp, he said, “Holland’s the most consistent linebacker I’ve got.” Jake maybe missing some tackles but he’s also making them. He was one of two players to lead in tackles against Miss. State with 8 and was in on a sack of Mettenberger last night. I think Frost is faster and when he gains some more experience that he will see more playing time at MLB.

Both comments above are fair and accurate. It is very telling to me how far behind we really are.

The middle linebacker is suppose to lead the team in tackles, so the 8 against Miss St doesn’t mean anything to me. I just believe there has to be someone else on our WHOLE roster who can play the position better and get us lined up properly.

Go back and watch every replay of the last 4 games when Holland is in. See what you think. It’s pretty pitiful when you see how bad he gets pushed around and the poor kid has not instinct at all…WDE!

Is it Groundhog Day? I feel like we have this conversation every week. Lets focus in the fact that holland is a senior and frost is getting a whole season of experience. I sincerely doubt that the coaches are oblivious to Holland’s deficiencies, but clearly there are no solid alternatives.

I find deep breathes and beer are helpful in times like these….

      Yep, what she said….

I would rather we talk about a position as a whole, than to berate a single player’s inefficiencies. No need in lowering ourselves into the abyss if you get my drift.

Jake Holland is horrible. He played with the exact same technique in high school and never should have been recruited. Use by body and jump in a hole regardless of where the back goes. He has been doing the same thing for 3 years.

Frost is getting a raw deal. He is much better than Holland. He was hustling when called for targeting. That put him in a disadvantage. At Lsu he was flagged for a horse collar even though he grabbed the left shoulder. That hurt his playing time.

Bottim line is when he is in the defense makes stops. The Msu game he was held out the first 2 drives of the 2nd half (why?). But when he came in the defense started making stops because he was around the ball, he was where he was supposed to be and he put pressure on the qb. He covers well and has better speed and can go sideline to sideline and has a motor. He flies to the football with a high motor. He ends up in the pile and he form takles. Holland pushes at the pile with his arms and is never the first man there and frequently is left standing with the tackler and ball carrier at his feet, as if saying I helped with that.Holland guesses at plays and doesnt follow the ball. He shys away from blockers getting beat almost everytime. He runs around blocks and so does the back going opposite ways untouched. Sometimes he is over ten yards away from a running play when it goes right through his assignment. I can honestly say Holland would not have started on my high school team.

  6. gumptowntiger says:

Holland is basically just filling a uniform at this point. He doesnt make plays. If he is involved in a play, makes a tackle, or recovers a fumble it is because he just happened to be there.

I cannot wait for him to graduate.

Apparently Frost has some sort of nagging shoulder injury. I’d like to know what happened to the JUCO we signed, Kenny Flowers. Is he a bust, hurt, or in the doghouse?

    • KoolBell KoolBell says:

Flowers got hurt in fall camp, and is still nursing the injury. I can’t find out what that injury is, or just how “day to day” he really is.

Our Linebackers are missing too many assignments period. Some of them are even lined up at the wrong spot when they are the one that calls out that assignment. This is “THE” weakness in our Defense right now, and the coaches have little option at this point.

  8. auh20 auh20 says:

We have had recent years of bad injury luck. We were missing two of our best defenders Saturday night making the defense look worse that it should. Yes Holland is too slow but he has good stats in spite of that. The calls he makes help the other 10. For his entire coaching career, Ellis Johnson has been a bend but don’t break guy. We really should start more aggressively even if it hurts the depth problem. If we get a lead, then we can play HUNH ball and the defensive depth won’t be as big a problem.
