Happy New Year From Track ‘Em Tigers!

By on December 31st, 2018 in Football, Memories 7 Comments »

I hope all of you had a great New Year’s Eve. The Tigers’ exciting win in Nashville gave Auburn fans even more reason to celebrate this year. I also hope everyone is enjoying the day and watching plenty of football. We’ll be pulling for the SEC the rest of the way—maybe even slightly pulling for Georgia. At this point, the conference is 4–3 with four more bowls to play.

Enjoy the games.

…..I’ve been watching the SEC some, this weekend. I’ve questioned coach Malzahn’s decisions this year, but some of those made by Mizzou’s Barry Odum take the cake. On New Year’s Eve, I spent the afternoon in the kitchen trimming collard greens, simmering pork neckbone stocks for black eyed peas and the collards, and making mashed potatoes from scratch. Also got a box this year of Omaha Steaks, and those went into a bag in my Anova sous vide circulator to cook to a nice medium rare.

…..While cooking, I got a chance to watch pretty much the whole Liberty Bowl on my little kitchen TV, in which Missouri lost to Oklahoma State 38-33. Okie Lite got the first touchdown, then Odum’s Tigers got to the six, then tried to run it up the middle twice for -1 yards, then threw the ball away on 3rd down. Settled for a field goal. Not good, against a potent Cowboy offense. Looked very similar to what we Auburn fans have seen, this past season.

…..Missouri rallied, and took a 16-14 lead, headed towards halftime. Mizzou got the ball back with 2:31 left in the half, and 2 timeouts left. Like Malzahn in the Iron Bowl, they did not throw the ball, and ran the clock out. Cowardly, I sez.

…..In the second half, Okie Lite got a quick touchdown, then Mizzou fumbled the ball on the first play, and the Cowboys went up 28-16. Game wasn’t over, though. The Tigers drove it, and ended up 4th and 4 from the 8. Down 2 scores, Odum chickened out once again, and set the field goal team in. It was good, but they were still down 2 scores.

…..Okie Lite scored again, and it looked like it was over, with a 35-19 Cowboy advantage. Mizzou failed on 4th down, and the Cowboys had the ball again, in prime shape. They they threw a pick on the first play, and Mizzou then hit an 86-yard touchdown pass to get back into the game, trailing 35-25.

…..The Tigers stopped Okie Lite, then drove again. On a 4th down in the red zone with less than nine minutes left, Odum put the offense out there, then inexplicably burned a timeout, and sent the field goal team in. That got Mizzou within a touchdown, but wasted a timeout.

…..Okie Lite answered with another apparent scoring drive, but Mizzou made an amazing pick in the end zone, to stave them off. Lock drove them down the field, and big bruiser back Larry Roundtree bashed into the end zone against a wilting Cowboy defense, to cut the lead to 35-33. It would have been for the lead, if not for poor decisions earlier.

…..Okie drove, and kicked a field goal to take a 38-33 lead, and Mizzou had a couple of minutes left. In the red zone, Odum ended up going for it on 4th and 1, and tried a QB draw with no lead blockers, and Lock was tackled for a loss. And the SEC took another loss.

…..Saw some 2nd half moments of the Aggies in the Taxslayer Bowl. Traveon Williams ran wild, in that one. Here’s hoping he goes out for the NFL draft. He’s been a pain when Texas A&M played Auburn the past couple of years.

I was sad the Mizzou lost. It was a fun game to watch. I thought there would be 95 points scored, not 73.

I will be pulling for the SEC too. BUT got to admit I won’t be hurt if Georgia loses and there’s no way in H**l that I’ll pull for Bama!!!

Happy New Year to all the TET community!

May everyone have a healthy, wise, and prosperous 2019 (including the football program)!

…..That was a mistake-filled performance, by the Bullies. The formula for beating them is to keep Nick Fitzgerald from running. Fortunately, Kentucky and LSU are holding up their end.
