Hammer the Huskies! (Auburn vs. Washington Open Thread)
This will be the 3rd game in a row for Auburn at this venue.
War Eagle, everybody, and happy first day of September! College football is back, today in full swing. This afternoon, the Auburn Tigers will take on the Washington Huskies in Atlanta. This one is an early top-ten showdown. The winner has a chance to propel itself towards a playoff appearance while the loser will have little margin for error.
This game will kick off around 3:30 PM, Eastern Time, and 2:30 Central Time. It’s an early kick for Husky fans on the West Coast. The game will be televised nationally on ABC television. Weather should not be an issue in the closed, air-conditioned Mercedes Benz Stadium, although the walk to the stadium from the parking area will be hot and humid, around 90 degrees near kickoff. There is a chance of a stray thunderstorm but only a small chance.
I feel like this game will have national appeal as folks tune in to see if the SEC will continue its winning ways against the rest of the country. In the past dozen years, the SEC has won 9 of 12 national championships, and the SEC has won over 60 percent of its bowl games. This game is a great chance for both Washington and Auburn to garner national attention.
As always, feel free to join in and enjoy this thread. I will at the keyboard for my usual play by play, armed with a big mug of coffee and a bowl of BBQ potato chips. War Eagle, and let’s see if Auburn begins a memorable season against a tough out-of-conference opponent. War Eagle!
……War Eagle, everybody! It has been a great day. I’ve eaten nothing but junk food most of the day, and watched football from 11 AM till 10 PM! Certainly won’t get to do this every Saturday this fall, but this was glorious!
…..Vanderbilt now leads MTS 35-7 late, and SEC fate is set, till tomorrow night when LSU and Miami meet. 12-1, on opening week.
…..Oh, that game was so bad, AUNation. They had our line calls scouted, and we also had receivers that could not catch! USC’s staff also knew that Chizik was much into the Tampa-2 defense exclusively, and they had a package for Matt Leinart matching Reggie Bush up on suspect Auburn safeties and linebackers.
….Shea Patterson loses the football on a 4 man rush, and Michigan’s chances are over. Notre Dame can run the clock out on a 24-17 win.
I spent a small fortune (at least to a college kid) to watch Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush film a season’s worth of highlights in Jh in ’03. That game was probably a large reason why we got disrespected and left out the next year.
…..Vandy has taken a 28-7 lead over Middle Tennessee in the 4th quarter. With that one nearly clinched, it looks like the SEC will finish 12-1, thru today. It’s up to LSU, to get number 13, tomorrow.
…..Auburn was running a wishbone triple-option offense, but we had a drop-back quarterback, Pat Washington. The staff did not really know how to blend Pat into the offense. We lost to Miami, 20-18. The following week in Austin, Texas, Bo Jackson separated his shoulder, and we lost to Texas, 34-27. The season seemed lost, but running backs started coming out of the woodwork. Kyle Collins. Colis Campbell. Brent Fullwood. Auburn ended up winning nine games with Bo mostly on the sideline, and a quarterback the staff didn’t know how to use.
…..Kickoff Classic. The only way to get a 12th regular season game, and great exposure, too, on the the weekend before the regular season started. We had our chance to prove we should have been national champs, instead of Miami. On a national stage, nationally televised.
So, in ’84 AU played Miami in NJ? That’s an odd marketing move.
…..Bama game is more or less over, with a 34-7 Bama lead. Flipped over to Michigan/Notre Dame. The Irish lead, 24-10, under five minutes, but Shea Patterson and those wacky yellow and black helmets are driving…
…..Vanderbilt completes their opening second half drive, and now leads Middle Tennessee, 21-7.
…..SMU is getting waxed by North Texas, 36-0. I think they are really missing head coach Chad Morris, who moved to Arkansas!
…..Big winners today? The Big Ten. Michigan may well go down, but everyone else in that league has or will win, today.
…..North Carolina lost at Cal, 24-17. That’s an embarrassment, for the ACC. Kansas State is losing to South Dakota, 24-19 late.
…..Checking some national scores… Disappointing night for the Michigan Wolverines. They are down at Notre Dame, 24-10.
…..Miami vs LSU tomorrow is going to be tough. The worst the SEC can finish this weekend is 11-3, and that would be if both Vandy and LSU lose. It’s been a pretty good day, for the league.
…..With Bama up 28-0 at halftime in Orlando, the only game really still in doubt is at Vanderbilt. Their offensive woes apparently are continuing. Middle Tennessee is hanging around still, trailing 14-7.
…..Yeah, I saw that. I’ve sat through a lot of those losses! None was as bitter as losing the Kickoff Classic to Miami, in 1984, after we had bitterly complained about them being giftwrapped the 1983 national title by both polls.
“It’s only happened twice in the history of Auburn football.
The first time Auburn defeated a Top 10 opponent to begin a season the Tigers went onto win a national championship. The year was 1957, and it wasn’t pretty then either.” AL.com
…..Alabama Power has blinked out again. I know the Tide fans are ticked!
MSU 28, Stephen F. Austin 3
Florida 31, Charleston Southern 0
Vanderbilt 14, Middle Tennessee 7
Alabama 14, Louisville 0
…..Checking the evening Stinger Scoreboard, SEC night games are all going the SEC’s way. Warts and issues are evident in places, but the SEC has most of these games under control already, in the second quarter.
…..Color me shocked at how porous Alabama’s offensive line is. They need two quarterbacks, possibly more, if this level of play keeps up!
…..And Tua is back in there on the next series. Tough kid.
…..I’m hoping Tua isn’t hurt too badly. They called targeting, but that was just a freak play. Tua had an incredible ad-lib on that TD pass.
I’ll take it. Not pretty but it’s a hurdle Malzahn needed to get over.
….Challenging day, for me, too! The SEC is currently 8-1, this weekend, with Tennessee providing a not-unexpected 40-14 loss to West Virginia. Other games I had questions about, but Auburn and Kentucky won.
…..I’ll be looking in on some evening games in a bit, and will comment a bit more at that time.
…..War Eagle, everybody! Time to get ready for the next game. Auburn practices again Alabama State next weekend, then gets the big CBS game against LSU. Should be fun!
…..There were some things to build on, this game. No turnovers, and Auburn did have nine tackles for loss in this one. This was a tough offense to defend, and Auburn held them to 15.
…..They keep talking about what a great play call the Whitlow TD was, but that wasn’t it. We were down a single point, and the coaches played for the field goal attempt. The Washington front seven got caught staring down the quarterback.
And, we kept a Benz jinx from taking root! First win in the new hotlanta stadium!
…..What a strange day!
…..Auburn beats Washington, 21-15 in an ugly one!
A “W” is a “W”.
HOW SWEEEET IT IS!!!!!
…..Knee by Stidham, and they don’t start the play clock in time. It’s over, Auburn won’t have to run another play!
…..Auburn can snap it twice now, and this one will be over. Auburn 21, Washington 15!
….Whitlow wildcat, will stutter down to the 35! First down!
….Time called, Washington’s last.
…..Here’s the keeper, Stidham is close to the first down!
…..1:27 left, and it will be 2nd and 8.
…..Give to Martin, will bull to the 45, timeout called.
….Just please, no turnovers! Ball security!
…..Washington has 2 timeouts. Realistically, Auburn needs one first down to run it out.
…..Review: passed, not fumbled. Auburn will have it at the Washington 47. They move the clock back to 1:31.
Great job by the D.
…..Call, could go either way on fumble/pass, but regardless, it was still 4th down. Auburn gets the ball regardless.
…..1:21 left! That was 4th down, and Auburn will have the ball, regardless!
….A flag, on the sideline?
….4th and long, Browning SACKED, lost the ball! Russell rumbling….
…..Washington will let it run, and are they going?
….Big Kat Bryant!
…..3rd and 14, two down territory. Clock running. Here’s Browning with an empty set. Scrambling, SAAAAAAACKED!
…..Browning will give to Gaskin, NOTHING, a 4 yard loss!
…..2nd and 10, with 3:02 left.
…..1st and 10. Browning will dump over the middle, misses under pressure.
…..Dinson, a statue.
….Browning in the gun. Flushed, will run, and get the first down to the Auburn 37.
…..3rd and 11, clock under 4 minutes.
…..Browning will go under center. Give to Gaskin, will bury Gaskin at the line!
Auburn can win this.
…..2nd and 13. you KNOW they are going to try another fade.
……1st and 15, at the Husky 46. Middle of the field. Give, nothing doing for Gaskin! ONly 2.
…..New set of downs., and a false start!
…..Here’s Browning, to throw, finds a Patchilli wide open to the Auburn 49.
Wide open – oy
….Too far, on the throw. 3rd and 3.
…..Audibles, Brown will float it, out of bounds!
….2nd and 3. Expect a shot.
….That’s what a lead blocker will do for you.
Would love to hear from Gus why he felt the need to go for two after the first TD.
…..From the 25. Give to Gaskin, got seven.
Defense has to step up
…..Here’s the boot, and another touchback from Carlson.
We may win. But boy have we made it hard.
That first failed two point conversion attempt is why we up by less that a TD and PAT
…..They need a touchdown. A field goal doesn’t win it for them, unless they get one quickly and play defense.
welp, that helps but we ended it with another wiff.
The failed goofy, failed two point conversion in the 1Q looms LARGE.
…..6:15 left, and Auburn clings to a 21-15 lead.
…..They just bit on that fake. Wildcat, pass batted down on the 2 point try, Cox trying to pass?
…..3rd and 7. Whitlow up the gut, HE WILL SCOREEEEEE!@
…..Draw play, nothing for Martin.
…..2nd and 8. Washington calls time, with 7:45 left in the ball game.
…..New set of downs in the red zone. Martin will get two.
…..2nd and 5 Auburn. Here’s a draw to Martin, down to the 12.
…..Auburn at the 25. Keeper, and he’s to the 20.
…..At the Washington 46. Stidham has time, deep, caught at the 25, Slayton!
We’ll take it
….Oh, facemask! New set of Auburn downs.
….Screen to Davis, nowhere to go, and a flag.
…..Stidham will take, and he’s firing to Cox, will back into a first down!
…..3rd and 9, possession play! Power comes back on…
That quick slant to NCM has been open repeatedly.
…..A first down is badly needed, here, especially after burning a timeout. With a punt, Auburn likely would not get the ball back till well under 5 minutes.
…..Here’s a timeout by Auburn, with 8:55 left in the ball game, trailing 16-15.
….19 total flags, 12 on Auburn.
…..2nd and 10. Give Martin, nothing doing.
Same old Same ol Malzahn Game 1 letdown.
…..Here’s Stidham rolling, shovels the ball ahead, incomplete.
What’s the current flag count?
…..Tigers are first and ten, a long way from paydirt.
…..4th and short, they punt. Liner, Davis will field it, belted at the 24.
…..3rd and long. Browning will take, and hit, Fuller will get it at the 41, short a yard.
…..2nd and 15. Browning will step up, fires short, and Pitreilli is dumped quickly.
The stupid tricky two point try really irks me. Why?????
Secondary cost us this game. Not one guy looked back to defend the deep pass.
…..Wait, they called it on Washington? 1st and 25. Browning scrambles, out to the 28.
LOL! We gave this joker a raise and extension.
…..Here come the Huskies, with 12:31 remaining. In no hurry. Browning will throw another fade, and another flag, and caught.
Looking like MBS will be AU’s house of horrors.
…..We are under 13 minutes left in the ball game, trailing 16-15.
….Siposs with a 41 yard punt, and Washington will take over at their 32.
…..And the radio misses three plays for a commercial. Grounding, Stidham flushed. 4th and 22.
Where is the first quarter Stidham?
…..Auburn needs to get points, here. If they don’t the clock will start to become an enemy. At least the defense is getting some rest with this drive, thus far.
…..Auburn is behind the sticks, trailing 16-15.
…..2nd and 10 Auburn. And a TV timeout, it seems.
This game would be tied if not for some BS two point trickeration.
…..They pick up the flag. No foul. Auburn is behind the sticks.
…..They will have to review this, as they do all targeting calls.
…..Targeting on the defense? Wow.
….New set of downs. Davis in motion. Fake, will be tipped up, flag! About time!
…..3rd and 1. Here’s Davis in motion. Fake to Cox, Davis on the screen, and he’s out to the 40!
…..2nd and 4. Martin up the gut, will a yard short.
…..1st and 10 Tigers. Screen to Davis, will get to the 31.
…..Auburn will start at the 25.
…..Here’s the kickoff. Fair catch called, Whitlow takes it at the six.
All these FGs …. need TDs
….14:06 remains in the game.
Tigers finally down. Now what are we doing to do?
…..Washington takes the lead, 16-15.
…..In comes Henry for a chip shot. The kick, will hit the post, but goes in.
…..3rd and goal at the 13. Fade coming. Fuller in motion. Browning will fire over the middle, tipped down by Darrell Williams!
…..Sweep give, losing yardage! McKlatcher, will be dumped at the 13!
…..Got my scoreboard working again. Tennessee is down 20-7, to West Virginia.
…..That is the end of the 3rd quarter, with Auburn still miraculously leading, 15-13.
…..Leave it to Alabama Power to crap out on opening football Saturday afternoon.
I keep hoping Auburn will claw its way back into this game – they look uninspired
I miss Auburn’s intensity from the 1st quarter.
…..Browning will go under center, give Akmed, got only a yard.
…..1st and 5 Washington. Give Akmed, will get to the ten, first down.
…..And ANOTHER offside penalty on Auburn.
A lot of unforced errors
…..That will move the ball deep into Auburn territory.
Hard to imagine us winning this game, but we certainly have made enough stupid mistakes to lose
…..Facemask, on Auburn.
Never leave your feet guys
…..Gaskin will try to cut back, and more flags.
…..Here’s Browning. Will run for the first down at the 36.
…..Browning will dump it to Batelli, for about 5.
…..New set of downs for Washington. Give Gaskin, will be coralled, nothing.
We are playing sloppy
…..TD Moultry. Third penalty of the day on him.
…..Flag, and Browning will run for a yard. Offsides Auburn.
…..Block in the back. Will bring up a first and 4.
…..Back on. Internet is going in and out. Browning escapes pressure, and finds the tight end for a big gain, and a flag.
……3rd and 7. Stidham will take, flags, and Auburn jumped? No, offsides!
Is Jack Crowe back?
…..Pistol Set. Give Martin, nothing doing.
…..Fake, Stidham will dump to Martin, gets about 3.
….Nick Coe swats the ball out, and Auburn HAS it at the 20.
….Jones wide open, Auburn secondary in disarray.
….Gaskin powers to the 25. Gonna have to switch computers.
Flag city. Mercy.
…..Igbinoghene flagged, bogus, it sounds like.
Malzahn needs to ditch the coaches new “uniform.” The khakis look like gold stretch pants and the Florida blue shirts look bad too.
…..Oh, crud, the power just went out. I’ve got maybe 15 minutes that this computer will run on battery backup…
…..If we were going to run it at them on 1st down, we need Cox and probably Jalen Harris in there to block! Otherwise we look like Scot Loeffler on the play calls!
Carlson, Carlson, Carlson…. 🙁
Don’t need Stidham taking those body shots.
….7:03 remains in the third quarter, and Auburn hangs onto a 15-13 lead. Washington will take over.
…..From 54 yards, Carlson is up, and will miss, wide right.
…..Auburn sends in Carlson, for a LONG field goal attempt.
…..3rd and 6, possession play. Shotgun. Stidham looks, looks, runs, and he will get hammered, short of the first.
…..2nd and 10, behind the sticks now. Stidham will give to Whitlow to the short side, not much. No lead blocker.
…..Stidham will fire to Whitlow, too hot to handle.
…..Loses a shoe, Whitlow in.
…..New set of downs. Martin, will get free, to the UW 43!
…..1st and 10. Pumps, will fire to Cox again, will bull out to the 46!
…..2nd and 8. Stidham will throw to Cox, hammered at the 33, close.
…..Here’s a trips right. Screen to Kam Martin, slides down. Slippery shoes?
…..Auburn will go from their 23.
Let’s hope Igbinoghene keeps breaking up passes – they’re clearly picking on him
…..Yeah, we did. The pick play doesn’t often get called. Clemson beat Alabama with that same play, in the national title game a couple of years ago.
Dodged a bullet there
…..It was the Huskies’ time to come up empty! Auburn still leads, 15-13!
…..Henry will try from 41. Kick is HOOOKED! NO GOOD!
…..Push it way back to the 23. Third and 21. Who’s on Fuller, batted down at the line!
…..Nice! Offensive P. I. 15 yards!
….They picked Dean.
…..3rd and 5, at the eight. Motion. Here’s Browning, to Fuller, and he scores, but a flag.
…..Browning will do it, knocked away by Igbinoghene!
…..2nd and 5, watch the fade.
Defense is getting smoked
…..New set of downs at the 13. Under center. Man coverage. Give Gaskin, got almost 5.
…..2nd and 8 at the Auburn 22. Wildcat, Gaskin will give to Akmed, first down.
…..Gaskin stutter steps, picks up two.
…..Jordyn Peters, not even a starting corner on Fuller.
…..2nd and 9. Fake, will fire left, and another miraculous catch by Fuller.
OMG – if you get flagged for pass interference, you should at least bat the ball away – ridiculousness
…..At the Auburn 49. Here’s motion. Screen to Achmet, tripped up for only one.
…..And Dean gets flagged! Bogus.
…..1st and 10 at the Washington 27. Browning floats one, caught, hey, they pushed off!
…..And another flag, Washington gets a hold.
We’re really missing Kerryon Johnson – it doesn’t appear anyone is worthy of filling his shoes
…..Only a 34 yard punt. We benched the Aussie, for this?
…..Marshall will boot it, fair caught at the 37.
….WHO would bite on a play fake, on 3rd and 13?
…..3rd and 13. Trips right, fake, will screen, Slayton gets two. Usless play call.
Gus, don’t get mad; fix it. Earn your salary.
….3 wides. Stidham has time, will be flushed, and has to throw it away.
…..Back Auburn up, 2nd and 12. Substitution.
…..2nd and 7. Whistles, Horton jumped.
…..Give to Martin, will stretch to the 35.
…..Here’s a fake, fires to the 33, Nate Craig Myers!
….They pick up the flag, but Auburn is backed up.
…..Igbinoghene takes it, and is POPPED at the 15, and a flag. Wow.
…..2nd half is about to begin! Washington will kick off. Noah Igbinoghene and Whitlow deep.
….In the SEC, Tennessee trails West Virginia 13-7, at the half. Georgia leads Austin Peay big, 38-0 early in the 3rd. Kentucky holds a slim 21-20 lead over Central Michigan. Missouri and Arkansas are coasting near halftime. Mizzou leads UT Martin 38-7, and Arkansas is up 31-6 over Eastern Illinois.
…..Wow. Maryland hung on, and beat Texas 34-29!
…..Auburn did have a time of possession advantage, 18:08 to just 11:52 for Washington, and Auburn gets the ball first in the second half. Maybe that will be a factor down the stretch.
…..Another thing killing Auburn is penalties. 5 for 54, thus far. Washington has 2 for 20.
…..The red zone woes are a little different, this time. We can’t get it to 3rd and short. We’re facing 3rd and long against an elite secondary, every time.
Same ol’ Gus. Red zone woes.
….Auburn managed only 3.6 yards per rush as a team, and a chunk of it was on that trick “hide the ball” fake near halftime.
…..Kam Martin leads all rushers with 52 yards on 13 carries.
…..Auburn MUST cover Aaron Fuller, in the second half. He had 5 catches, and no other Washington receiver had more than 1.
…..Auburn dominated the yardage numbers in the first half, 286 to 217. Most amazing stat? Auburn did not punt in the first half, nor turn the ball over on downs. And still has only 15 points.
Me too. We’ve seen this problem before.
…..I’m still bothered that Auburn got to the red zone 5 times, and only has 15 points.
…..Auburn tried to wear Washington’s defensive front down some, but didn’t have much luck. That might pay dividends later, but I’m not sure, at this point.
…..I have not seen much slipping around by Auburn, this game, so that’s good.
…..There’s a chess match going on at the receiver spots. Last season, Auburn’s DBs broke passes up, even with their backs turned, by watching for the receiver’s hands to go up for the catch. Washington appears to have scouted that, and has guys faking catches early. Auburn is biting, and getting flagged.
Looks like a Gus coached team. Talent is definitely there though.
…..The coffee is gone, and something more formidable is in order, in this tense game.
How did that last play of the half have any chance to score?
…..That was a dumb call. Halftime, Auburn 15, Washington 13.
…..3rd and 4. Screen to Davis, dodging, out at the 48, but the clock was out.
…..It is probably Hail Mary time. It would be hard to complete something, AND get the clock stopped.
….We have six seconds, and Auburn calls time.
…..2nd and 16, screen to the 41 is Martin.
…..Holding on Harrell.
……2nd and 5. Flag, and Stidham runs, drive killer.
….Fires to Shenker, to the 40 and out of bounds.
…..And Auburn will down it, NO, Davis, to the 36 on the hidden ball!
Wow, that was some drive by UW
…..43 seconds left, two timeouts left for Auburn.
We’ve got to get pressure on Browning. If we dont they can do that all day.
…..Here is a pooch kick, and it’s fair caught at the 25 by Spencer Nigh.
We don’t need to give them momentum going to half.
Defense already had one foot in the locker room and gave that away – disappointing
…..We are not getting ANY safety help on those deep balls, and our guys can’t play the ball. We see their arms move, and we grab.
…..Yeah. No bobble. TD. PAT is good, and Washington has cut the Auburn lead to 15-13, with 43 seconds left in the half.
….Wow. That was a heck of a catch. Was he in bounds?
…..New set of downs, fade, touchdown Pounds.
…..Throws deep, pass interference, and caught anyway by Jones, deep in Auburn-land.
Announcer is being stupid. Would not have been grounding, Cox was right there. That’s who JS was trying to flip it to.
…..New set of downs. Will fire to midfield, and to the Auburn 48 is Pitrelli.
Come on D
…..Browning dumps to Fuller over the middle, dumped at the 36.
….1:23, Both teams have 2 timeouts left.
I prefer TDs.
…..Carlson will boot it away, again. Out of the back of the end zone, again, touchback.
…..That review indicates that the refs made the right call. Stidham’s arm came forward, but it was AFTER the ball was already loose off a hit. Fumble. Correct call.
…..With 1:23 left in the half, Auburn takes a 15-6 lead.
…..Here it is, GOOOOOD! From 53!
Instead of pronouncing Lafayette, lafet, ABC announcer pronounced it lafeet
…..Officials won’t review it. Carlson comes in. From 53.
…..Should have been called an incomplete pass, instead called a fumble, and Auburn loses 5 yards on the call.
Stidham still not proficient in throwing it away
…..Covered by Auburn. And Ryan Davis is down.
….3rd and 9. At the 30. Bunch set, motion. Stidham will drift, shovels, loose ball!
….Defender pushed him out.
……They are running clock. 2nd and 9. Stidham will fire to the end zone, caught, but out of bounds.
…..New set of downs, half huddle. Give to Martin, nothing doing.
….They had him, and he made that play on his own!
…..Brings up 3rd and 4. Confusion? Under center? Pitch Shivers, and he’s to the 31!
…..2nd and about 6. Give to Whitlow, maybe a yard.
…..At the 44 of Washington, Whitlow bangs to the 39.
…..Here the flip back, will run down the sideline, to the 40!
…..It is, and an automatic first down.
…..I think that’s defensive holding!
…..3rd and 10. Baffling set of play calls. Stidham checking off. Will step up, hit, incomplete, flag?
…..2nd and 10. Martin up the gut again, again no push.
….Or not. Nothing.
…..1st and 10 Tigers. Three wides, Martin gets 2.
…..Here’s another kickoff. Igbinoghene and Whitlow deep. Whitlow will break a tackle, reverse field, to the 26.
…..I’d feel good about a long, ball-control, wearing and tearing touchdown drive, about now.
…..With 5:57 left in the half, Auburn still leads, 12-6.
…..Henry from 28, no problem.
…..Auburn went man, and that had no chance with linebackers waiting.
…..3rd and goal. Browning will keep, NOTHING! LOst two!
…..From the eight. Browning will float it, no good! Igbinoghone wasn’t having it!
…..We have Dean with a hand injury, and now Javaris Davis. I would not be surprised with a 2nd down fade call to Fuller. We’d better find him quick, and double him.
…..With 6:46 left in the half, Auburn leads, 12-3, but the Huskies are threatening at the Auburn 8 yard line.
…..2nd and goal from the 8. Pistol set, and they will call time.
At least the line is as advertised
…..First and goal. Wildcat. Gaskin will take, and is buried by Derrick Brown after a couple.
Got to keep pressure. When Browning has time to set, hes picking us apart.
…..They’ll tape the hand of Javaris Davis.
…..Tennessee is on the board. They trail West Virginia, 10-7, with about 5 minutes left in the half, in that one.
…..They will decline, and have first and goal at the nine, unless the refs do something weird.
….Reviewing. Davis was early, no doubt. Yeah, that’s a catch, too.
…..Javaris Davis flagged, AND injured also.
Got behind Davis
……1st and 20. Going deep, and a flag, caught inside the ten by Fuller.
More like tackling of course
….Two guys just tackled Dontavius Russell.
Finally a holding call
…..Holding, back ’em up!
…..1st and 10 Washington. From the 40. Flags, as Achmed gets nothing.
…..Rumbles for 22, to the Auburn 44.
…..New set of downs to the 37. Browning will give to Achmed, room.
….Brings up 3rd and 10. Browning checking off. Time, will dump to Fuller, and he’s got the first down in the flat.
…..2nd and 14. Sample in motion. More mortion. Screen, getting about 4 McKlatchern.
…..Wing T formation? Wow.
…..Washington from the 25. Under center. Browning will give to Achmed, and he’s flattened! Loss of 4!
…..Carlson to kick off again. Like the first three, this one is a touchback!
Amen. Would probably have at least 8 more points if two of the FG’s had been touchdowns.
…..I can’t help but feel that opportunities are being squandered, with 3 field goal attempts inside the 20 yard line.
…..With 10:35 left in the half, Auburn takes a 12-3 lead.
…..Anders Carlson comes in again. From 28 yards, this one is good!
…..Wasting a lot of time. Stidham will throw, knocked away on the curl.
…..3rd and 7, for the Tigers. Need a good play call, here.
….2nd and 10. Half huddle, trips right, fake to Martin, rolling, will to the 10.
Let’s get a TD here tigers!
…..Again, no lead blockers.
…..New set of downs. Give Whitlow, will get hit behind the line, nothing.
…..2nd and 4. Here’s the fake, will screen to Whitlow, will fight inside the 13!
….At the 24, Martin bounces outside, to the 18!
…..Stidham gives Martin, rumbles down to the 25!
…..4th and about a foot. Tigers going?
….Ugly play call.
….3rd and one. Tigers give to Martin, no lead blockers, short.
…..Martin up the gut, not much.
….New set of downs, Kam Martin, will rumble to the Washington 45.
Good grief. The penalties.
…..2nd and 9. Stidham will find Seth Williams, first down!
….Wildcat, Whitlow takes, gets only 1.
……Holding 9, block in the back on 17? McClain? Spot the ball at the Auburn 27.
….That’s coming back, Jordyn Peters with the block in the back.
…..4th and 6, Whitford punts low, R. Davis is loose, but flags.
…..Browning, flips to Gaskin, knocked away! Incomplete!
…..It probably won’t last, but right now, Appy State has a 10-7 over Penn State in Happy Valley, near the end of the first. Wouldn’t that be a stunning upset?
…..Cannella has to catch those contested balls. That’s what he’s in there for, is his size and strength. A better pass would have given him a better chance.
……3rd and about 5, as the first quarter ends. Auburn leads, 9-3.
…..Make it 2nd and 5. Give Gaskin, dumped at the line by Davis and Williams!
…..2nd and 10 Huskies. Auburn jumped offsides. D. Russell.
……Fake, Browning flushed, will fire into the Auburn bench, incomplete.
Cannella didn’t have much of a chance on that catch – had defenders all over him
…..A dropped ball, and missed field goal means the Tigers come up empty, on that drive. Tigers still lead, 9-0.
…..And Carlson pushes it right. No good.
…..In comes Carlson, to try from 33 yards.
…..3rd and 4, at the 14. Trips left. Stidham will take, will throw low to Cannella, dropped.
….2nd and 8. Fake to Whitlow, Stidham, scrambles, slides to the 14.
….New set of downs. Give Whitlow, fought to the 18.
…..Screen to Cox, ruuuummmmbling down to the 20!
…..To the Washington 39!
….At the 45, screen Ryan Davis, loose!
……2nd and 7. Stidham will fire behind Seth Williams, but he’s got it, first down!
…..Auburn 1st and 10. Here’s two tailbacks, Stidham fakes to Shivers, and keeps, to the 27.
…..Here’s the boot! Short, taken at the 3 by Whitlow, to the 23, straight ahead.
…..Noah Igbinoghene and Whitlow drop deep. Henry to kick off for the Huskies.
…..Auburn survived a big pass, and penalty on that drive, and held Washington to a field goal.
….Kick is good, with 2:59 left in the first quarter, Auburn still leads, 9-3.
…..Washington sends in the field goal team. Henry from 31.
….Or two. 3rd and 10 Huskies. THree wides. Browning, hit, ball flutters into the turf!
……Browning is flushed, lost a yard!
…..2nd and 8 coming.
…..At the 14 of Auburn, Huskies go. 3 wides, gun. Give Gaskin, bounces outside, chopped down by Davis!
….TD Moultry flagged on both.
…..Call, two fouls on the D. Offsides, and roughing the passer. Tacks on the end of the run. Ouch.
….Three wides. Browning will fake with a flag, throws to Fuller deep, inside the Auburn 30.
…..Only a yard. Derrick Brown beat a double team.
…..Double tight ends, heavy look. Pistol set. Give Gaskin into the sideline, nope!
…..Huskies will start at the 25. Browning under center, give to Gaskin, has room to the corner, to the 38.
…..Here’s Carlson for the boot. Third kickoff, same result. Touchback out of the end zone.
…..Stidham is off to a hot start, hitting 7 of his first 8 passes. Kam Martin, 5 carries for 16 yards, not too impressive.
…..Tennessee now trails West Virginia 10-0. That one may get ugly, for the SEC.
….With 5:39 left in the first quarter, Auburn takes a 9-0 lead!
…..In comes Anders Carlson for the field goal attempt. From 32, it’s good!
…..3rd and 5 at the Washington 15. Trips right. Looking, will fire high, Slayton can’t get it.
Pass game looks great. Hope the running game gets going.
…..2nd and 9. 3 wides, checking off. Give to Martin up the gut, pushing the pile, got to about the 14.
I wish ABC would get rid of that yellow box.
….At the 20, dumped to Ryan Davis, not much.
…..Possession play. 4 wides. Cox in the backfield. Fires over the middle, and Nate Craig Myers has the first down!
…..2nd and 8, Tigers under center, toss to Martin, to the 44. Will set up 3rd and 6.
…..Give to Cox in the middle, a couple.
….In the gun. Stidham will throw on the out, caught!Slayton!
…..Will back Auburn up, 3rd and 16.
…..Drive killer. That’s chop block, 15 yarder.
…..3rd and short, give Martin, flag, has the first down, but what’s the call?
…..2nd and 8. Stidham flushed, dumps to Kam Martin, just short.
…..Stidham fakes, will get only a couple.
…..In Landover, Maryland, another northeast rain delay. Maryland leads Texas 31-29.
…..Checking the “last mug of coffee” scoreboard… Georgia mucking around a bit. They only lead Austin Peay 3-0, midway through the first quarter.
…..I think Browning was just trying to throw that away, and his receiver gave up on the play.
….Tigers take over at Husky 36!
…..Big rush, forced a bad throw.
…..2nd and 9 Huskies. Substitutions. Shotgun, motion. Empty set, Brown will throw into traffic, DEANNNN! Picked off!
…..Play fake, screen to Fuller, nothing doing!
….3rd and 8. Browning will scramble, will find Sampley for the first down.
…..Trying islolate Fuller on a safety.
…..2nd and 8. Browning will throw, too far for Fuller.
….New set of downs, pistol set. Give, Gaskin won’t get much, this time.
…..Wham play, on that one.
…..First and ten Huskies. Give to Gaskin, has a hole, close to the stake.
…..Carlson to kick off. Fans roaring in the background. This one is drilled into the stands, again!
We’ll need to remember Canella – was a beautiful catch
…..Cannella could not catch a cold, last season. That was a spectacular catch in traffic, that time.
….So, with 11:45 left in the first, Auburn has a 6-0 lead.
Two point conversion?
…..Batman formation? Malik Willis will come up short on the conversion.
…..3rd and 8 at the Washington 11. Pocket, will fade, Cannella….
…..Afternoon SEC games starting to kick off. Tennessee already trails West Virginia in Charlotte, 3-0.
…..Auburn has thrown mostly screens at this defense, wary of an All-American secondary. Just don’t turn it over here, or take a big loss, please?
…..3rd and 8. Three wides. And time called by Auburn. With 11:51 left in the first.
…..2nd and 10. Tigers with three wides. Give Martin, not much into the teeth of that blitz.
Seeing runners running in traffic holding the ball with one hand – hope that’s jitters – easy to strip
…..Stidham fakes, keeps, to the 13. No gain.
…..2nd and 8 for Auburn. Cox out, 4 wides. Martin and Stidham. Will fire to Martin, will get to the stake!
…..New set of downs. Give to Martin, will run to the 21.
…..Tigers will spot it at the 36. Slot left, will fake, fires to Ryan Davis, will pick up a dozen!
….Crosses midfield, will get to the 36!
…..In comes the punt team. Ryan Davis deep. Whiford will boot it, Davis…
…Nick Coe just whipped his man.
…..3rd and 10, possession play. Motion across. Pumps, will be SACKED!
…..2nd and 10. Empty set. WIll scramble, right, shovel ball, incomplete!
…..1st and 10 Washington. Pistol set, slot right, runs Gaskin, NOTHING!
…..Huskies will start at the 25.
….And this one is on! Through, and out of the end zone! Touchback.
…..First career kickoff, for Anders Carlson for Auburn. Here is the boot! Gaskin and Achmed deep.
…..Kick team heads out on the field.
…..So, the Huskies will get the ball first.
…..Here’s the toss, and Auburn has won. They will defer!
…..We have the toss of the coin, coming up.
…..Teams running on!
…..I’m dialed up to ABC, still Buckeyes at this moment.
Am seeing 3:45 for Auburn on ABC
…..Reportedly, the crowd is about 80 percent Auburn fans!
Looks like they’re moving Ohio State to another channel
…..There is a note at the bottom of the ABC broadcast, that the Ohio State/Oregon State game is going to be pushed to ESPNews. Perhaps we’ll have full TV?
….Ole Miss adds a field goal, with 4:30 left in Houston. Ole Miss 47, Texas Tech 27.
….It is a final, in Columbia. South Carolina 49, Coastal Carolina 15.
…..Ole Miss survives a 4th down attempt. Then runs a QB draw, and Tech AGAIN hits a sliding quarterback, and that’s definitely targeting! 9:03 remains in that game, with Ole Miss up 44-27.
…..They have finally kicked off the 2nd half in the Ohio State game.
…..My thought are that if the game must go on, they need to at least televise it on the SEC Alternate channel. ESPN and ABC are both owned by Disney.
….Ohio State leads Oregon State 42-14, and they are still at halftime.
…..We could have an issue with the start of this one. Ohio State/Oregon State has been rain-delayed for about an hour, and they are currently on ABC. They could make Auburn wait, OR they could just not televise Auburn till the Ohio State game ends.
…..We are about 45 minutes from kickoff, Auburn vs. Washington.
…..Ole Miss goes deep after the flag, touchdown. A. J. Brown. Ole Miss 44, Texas Tech 27.
…..They pick up the targeting call, but leave the P-foul. The quarterback was sliding feet-first. Can’t hit ’em like that.
…..Tech will get another defensive player tossed, for targeting.
…..I’ve watch a lot of the Ole Miss tilt. The landsharks have some amazing skill players, but this isn’t a polished football team. Fumbles, short punts, poorly timed penalties. However, they just got by with a blatant grab in the secondary, and stopped Tech on 4th down.
…..Checking the BBQ Chip Scoreboard, South Carolina seems to have things well in hand. They lead Coastal Carolina 42-12, with about 9 minutes left in that game. Ole Miss leads Texas Tech after 3, 37-27.
…..Texas Tech isn’t going quietly. They have answered the Ole Miss TD with a big drive of their own. Ole Miss 37, Texas Tech 27, with 5:30 left in the 3rd. And some injuries mounting on the Ole Miss defense…
…..Texas Tech worked their first possession of the second half for a field goal, then Ole Miss breaks a long touchdown run. 37-20 Ole Miss, and it’s slipping away from the Red Raiders…
…..At the half, it’s Maryland 24, Texas 22 as they threw the two point conversion pass out of the back of the end zone.
…..Fade route, TD Longhorns. The collapse continues.
…..Maryland is rapidly blowing their game against Texas. Once ahead 24-7 in this one, they’ve run a speed sweep backed up to their own goal line, fumbled and given up a safety. On the kickoff from the 20, they kicked it out of bounds, giving Texas the ball at the 50 yard line, and Texas is moving with just under a minute in the half, trailing 24-16.
…..We could nominate Lane Kiffin and Florida Atlantic for “most inept” today, but one must consider the Lovie Smith era, at Illinois. The Fighting Illini trail lowly Kent State 17-3 at the half.
…..A number of top 25 games at half, or close to it:
Ohio State 42, Oregon State 14
Oklahoma 42, Florida Atlantic 0
TCU 38, Southern 7
Maryland 24, Texas 14, about 5 minutes left in the half.
…..We got to halftime in the early SEC games. Ole Miss 30, Texas Tech 17. South Carolina leads Coastal Carolina 28-3.
…..Ole Miss 30, Texas Tech 17, with just a few seconds left in the first half.
…..Ole Miss squanders an opportunity. Had first and ten at the 17, but a 3rd down false start AND personal foul, and now they will have to settle for a 39 yard field goal attempt.
…..Here’s a surprise score: Maryland 24, Texas 7, midway through the second. The Longhorns getting a rude introduction to this season…
…..Payback call? Ole Miss gets flagged for a questionable pass interference call, on an uncatchable ball. Tech cashes it for a score, and it’s now Ole Miss 27, Texas Tech 17. Just under two minutes left in the half.
…..Ole Miss pushes their lead over Texas Tech out to 27-10, about 6 minutes left in the half of that one. In other SEC action, South Carolina leads Coastal Carolina comfortably, 21-3 near the half.
…..Few surprises, here at the noon hour. The favorites in the top 25 are winning, and most are winning big. Probably the closest game is Clemson 10, Furman 0 in the 2nd quarter.
…..28-0, Oklahoma over Florida Atlantic, end of the first quarter. Ouch.
…..Ole Miss going on 4th down, and they bust it for a 39 yard touchdown. Ole Miss 24, Texas Tech 7, in Houston. The Cliff Kingbury death watch officially begins.
…..Checking the hot coffee scoreboard.. No love for Lane Kiffin and his island of misfit toys. Oklahoma is bombing Florida Atlantic, 21-0, still in the first quarter.
…..More woes for Texas Tech. They called a pretty bone-headed no-lead-blocker QB keeper, and their starting quarterback got his ankle rolled on the play, thanks to unblocked Ole Miss defenders crashing down. You have to wonder what the coordinator was thinking…
…..Interesting series. I wasn’t aware that they could review a non-call, and assess a post-play penalty.
…..A ticky-tack review, and tack on a targeting flag to Texas Tech. They had Ole Miss stopped, but automatic first down, AND they lose a starting DB on the ejection. Ole Miss cashes it for a field goal, and leads, 17-7.
…..And the Ole Miss defense will go back on the field, as the Rebs ran the kickoff back for a score. 14-7 Ole Miss, early. Defense optional, today!
…..And Ole Miss evidently brought the Swiss cheese defense to Houston. Lots of holes! Texas Tech ties the game, and made it look easy.
…..T’amu torches the Texas Tech defense on the second play of the game. 7-0 Ole Miss Rebels.
…..They are saying on Gameday, that Husky left tackle Adams did not make the trip to Atlanta. That’s who was supposed to block Nick Coe…
I am back and forth on this game between nervous and confident. Their OT being out is huge news for AU. Got to win the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
…..My thoughts after watching lots of Youtube of both teams from last season, is that the game will come down to Auburn’s front seven on defense. Against every team Auburn played until Atlanta, the middle was stuffed, and pretty much both runs and passes were forced outside. And Auburn is built to string out wide plays for nothing, or a loss.
…..And we are live! Football is less than an hour away for the early games. We are about 5 hours out from the Auburn/Washington tilt.
About Acid Reign:.....Still making noise after all these years! Lifetime slacker, dreamer, and miscreant with a knack for calculation. I was born in the United State of Texas, but have spent the majority of my years here amongst the shaded hills of the Tragic City, enjoying glorious smog-enhanced sunsets. In a troubled county, I live in a little slice of paradise between the ridges of Red and Shades Mountains. I've been an obsessive Auburn football follower since the Punt-Bama-Punt days, and have seen a lot of great football on the Plains. This lazy shirker finally learned the value of hard work and persistence from the fine folks in Auburn, and enjoys his return visits immensely! Hobbies include guitar-playing (or really just making loud and weird noise on any sort of instrument or object), cooking, computers, tennis, and old-school pen and paper RPGs. I love getting together with a good drink, great family, and friends..... (Acid Reign is Track ’Em Tigers’ Senior Editor). View Profile →
