Gogue Makes Plans to Replace Chizik

Gene Chizik

Auburn Undercover.com is reporting this hour that Auburn president Jay Gogue has notified members of the board of trustees that he’s making preparations to possibly replace football coach Gene Chizik, while planning to keep Jay Jacobs as athletic director.

While there’s nothing earth shattering in that statement, it’s the first confirmation from sources that Gogue is in fact looking to make a change should the season finish as expected.

Senior Editor Phillip Marshall writes, “In telephone calls with some members of the Board of Trustees last week and early this week, Gogue said he intends to form a committee to help with the decision and plans to move quickly, ideally naming a new head coach within days after the end of the season should the decision be made that Chizik will not be retained.”

The article goes on to say that Gogue plans to reassign associate athletic director Tim Jackson, who now oversees the football operation.

Marshall says that one potential coaching candidate mentioned by Gogue is Louisville offensive coordinator Shawn Watson. There’s no indication why Gogue may be favoring Watson this early in the process.

Kirby Smart’s name has been mentioned in Atlanta. I am sure many names will be mentioned. I would prefer that Auburn fire Jay Jacobs if Chizik is gone.

    • rn4au rn4au says:

Can someone PLEASE tell me why we would not fire Jay Jacobs? Look at where our sports programs are as a whole, not to mention where the football program is… If this is the direction we plan to go why do anything at all…geeezzzzz!

  2. Malakai Malakai says:

Louisville’s coordinator? What the what?! I would think Auburn is entitled to someone who has actually been a head coach, but that’s just me.

  3. pushinwithrope says:

jay you once wrote that sometimes you leave with the ugly girl to avoid going home alone, well news like this is righ in line with seeing her two months later to find out shes pregnant. how does jacobs survive what theyve deemed a massive mistake( if it wasnt a mistake they wouldnt be changing)

    • Jay Coulter Jay Coulter says:

So true Pushin. Sadly, that’s really funny. I agree. I honestly just don’t see Auburn going that direction. I don’t believe Gogue could survive such a weak move.

      • Col.Angus Col.Angus says:

If you don’t think Gougue woud hire Watson, why float the name? And if he did, without Watson being a legitimate and serious candidate, Gougue pretty much looks like a complete moron. When you start throwing out names that means they most likely they have been contacted or have somehow expressed interest in the job. The mere fact that Watson HAS been mentioned almost IMMEDIATELY prevents the possibility that anyone of substance will be hired as they won’t want to appear to want a job that we would offer to a Louisville OC.

        • Jay Coulter Jay Coulter says:

I guess what I mean to say is that I don’t those in power will let Gogue go down that path without warning him that he’s making a huge mistake. I would hope he’d think better of it after getting some advice. He doesn’t strike me as someone who’s terribly knowledgeable about football, which is scary. I hope he’ll seek counsel.

          • Col.Angus Col.Angus says:

Thats what scares me. He apparenlty is willing to keep Jacobs but is himself engaged in the coaching seasrch, which should be the job of the AD. Again, this is why we aren’t going to draw a competant name coach. The leadership is showing they aren;’t capable of making sound business decisions and creating a definitive and accountable heirarchy.

        • Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

          Presicely what I was thinking.

  4. Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

If we are going to fire an MNC winner, we need to hire someone who is proven. I would make an exception for Kirby Smart, because he has SEC experience and he has had great mentorship in Saban…….but even then I am hesitant. We need a strong personality that is a great coach and has no problem telling the ‘Powers’ to shove it.

Also, I think that it’s tacky to start a coaching search before your current head coach is fired. And if he is fired, then tell him before all of these types of conversations are started….

And when one says that ‘Tim Jackson will be reassigned’..what does that mean? I would hope it means that he is allowed to valet cars at game day events….

    • LSU Jonno says:

I would think that Chizik already has the news.

It sounds from what Jay posted that he was given an ultimatum. Win an SEC game or your fired.

    • KoolBell KoolBell says:

First off, Tim Jackson better stay away from my car, period. I’ll park it myself.

Seriously, “IF” Auburn is going to fire Chizik, that decision has already been made. “IF” that decision has truly been made, then Auburn has already contacted the Agents of prospective coaches, and are asking if there is any interest in coaching at AU.

Those names will be gathered before the search committee when it is convened, and true interviews then will be done.

We will find out who the next coach will be when the University releases a statement to the media.

Jetgate wasn’t the first time a coach was contacted prior to the existing coach being fired. It wasn’t the last either.

  5. Col.Angus Col.Angus says:

This is the peril in replacing Chizik, you start over from scratch with an unproven commodity. They may be good, they may be bad, but most likely it will take a few years to figure this out. That is Shawn Watson or any other candidate that will take our job. Those of you that think that we will get a flashy name head coach who will come in an compete with Saban are outright nuts. We aren’t going to get Kirby, Bobby, Jimbo or anybody else with a reputation. We may offer a ton of money but we won’t offer so much that they will take on the dysfunction of Auburn and its spoiled fan base. These people are thinking of their LONG TERM success, not 3 years , a 4-20 record against the SEC, a pink slip and a tarnished reputation.
Chizik has more than earned a ticket out of town, but circumstances (number of frehmen playing, QB situation, recruiting and most importatntly the buy out), dictate that unless you can get CERTIFIED can’t miss UPGRADE, the prudent thing would be to hold your nose and let Chizik see if he can pull this thing out of the ditch.
Also since Jacobs doesn’t seem to be on the chopping block, it seems kind of stupid to replace the major when the Colonel who directs him, absolutely blows too.

    • Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

I have to disagree with you about Auburn not being able to get a coach with a good rep. Money talks. If you recall, before Mal Moore stalked Saban, Alabama waas every bit the dysfunctional circus that AU seems to be now.

    • BigDaddyAU says:

Well said. Auburn, with it’s meddling trustees, will never attract top tier coaches unless they hire an AD that has the gall to tell the BOT to butt out. It doesn’t matter how much money they want to throw at folks..it won’t happen.

I’ll go as far as to say that IF you bring in another coach next year you will get a false sense of security because next years team will win because they are more mature and more experienced. How much real difference was there between 2009 and 2010? More experience for the players regardless of the system..then you add a SENIOR laden OL, a once in a lifetime QB, and a D-lineman that put it all together.

You have upperclassmen in key positions and you win.

You start 4 Freshmen/RS Freshmen on OL, freshman QB, sophmore RB, 1 decent WR and young LB’s and you get the 2012 Tigers.

Next year we will win because of experience….doesn’t matter who you get to coach. They guy coaching now took us to the top of the mountain…if you see a sure fire cant miss guy out there that can do that next year hire him..if not you better be damn glad you got someone already in place that’s been there.

    • audude audude says:

Here , here. Anyone who thinks it wont take a couple of years for another coach just to get going, see Saban, needs a history lesson or to open their eyes.

  6. wde1988 wde1988 says:

    Interesting.

But perhaps the most amazing thing is that TOTM and I can see things in a similar light. The zombie apocolypse must be right around the corner… let me ask the magic 8 ball. LOL. That is still funny!

Anyway! Dr. Gouge will be making a HUGE mistake if he hires some unheard of and untested coach at pennies on the dollar. You get what you pay for… screw this up, and the next job announcement from AU will be for President.

It’s interesting to note that Bobby Petrino’s dad has said that he has expressed interest in University of Kentucky. I thought that was interesting considering there was no news at Auburn. But now… I don’t know. Is this some kind of trick to force us to take him??

And about Jacobs… you can say, again like TOTM refers to Mr. Jackson, that Jacobs is a “consultant” in our media department if you want… but he needs to be removed as the AD effective TODAY. Our big three programs are pathetic and HE is directly responsible. We spent all that money on an arena… we might as well let the cows in the back 40 come and graze there. And our baseball team… is consistently under-acheiving!

AU has to get it together. Before Dr. Gouge starts dropping names of potential hires… he might want to bring Chizik in and tell him to his face that he is gone. The next step he might want to do (if he had a good AD) would be to see what is available and who AU wants to target. Name dropping is a horrible negotiation technique. All it shows is that AU is wreckless. Get a big name. Get a proven winner. Make the starting pay appropriate for the hire.

No more diamonds in the ruff selections and hoping that somehow this piece of coal is going to turn out to be something special… the crap is a proven recipe for frustration and throwing good money after bad.

    • wde1988 wde1988 says:

By the by… like to point out that this hasn’t been mentioned yet in any way on ESPN, Sporting news, AL.com or AUsports.

Further, It’s obvious that COL A and I disagree about bringing a big name to AU. I do happen to think it is possible. Why? Because I think Gene Chizik and his staff have proven that you can recruit here against the big boys. That would be important to keeping a person’s reputation intact. A big name coach with the right staff… could do wonders here.

But before we get too excited… let’s just see how this pans out. Not saying it isn’t true… but there is no action on the Western front… add to it the news I mentioned before about Petrino. He and his supporters at AU are like sharks in shallow water… I bet they would jumping to get him at AU over Kentucky. Besides… barring our records being similar… AU is just better all around. Who would want to go to the blue grass state? Cue the banjos…

  7. Todd92 Todd92 says:

Shawn Watson has a record of 11-22 as a head coach at the D-1A level. Let that sink in for a minute.

  8. Todd92 Todd92 says:

A coach is having marked success in rebuilding a lower tier BCS School so we decide his Offensive Coordinator who has a .333 winning percentage as a HC….. This is preposterous.

  9. Jay Coulter Jay Coulter says:

The way Marshall’s story reads is, “Gogue mentioned at least one potential candidate: Louisville offensive coordinator Shawn Watson.” So, in fairness to Gogue, he only mentions him as a candidate. Now, where in the world he came up with that name is anyone’s guess. I trust Phillip completely. He usually has pretty good sources. He doesn’t write it if he doesn’t truly believe it. So there’s probably some merit.

    • Todd92 Todd92 says:

Why even let it out now even if there is truth to it? Right before the UGA game….. This is the kind of crap you keep close to the best until the team is on the bus after the Iron Bowl.

  10. Jonathon Jonathon says:

This is all kind of disturbing. Jay Jacobs being retained? I thought for sure Jacobs and Loeffler were the two main targets.
I wouldn’t put much stock in head coaching names at this stage in the game. There will definately be a final short list that will be leaked and that will include the bigger names. It might also include some obscure names, but making another ‘Chizik, Gamble Hire’ would not look all that good.
It sounded pretty clear amongst the fan base how all this should go down (IF any of this happens), but if there’s talk about some backwards routine, we’re clearly in some serious trouble far deeper than any of us can imagine.

Jay’s comment about Gogue not being all that ‘football savvy’ and one who calls the shots is VERY disturbing to digest. Almost Insane to have a Louisville OC even named as the next 5 million dollar man at Auburn is preposterous.

    • Todd92 Todd92 says:

If Jacobs is retained and not doing the hiring what does that say to prospective incoming coach? What a complete and utter cluster f*ck.

      • Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

Exactly! If you don’t trust your AD to make an intelligent hire. Why the hell is he still AD?

  11. wde1988 wde1988 says:

Can anyone explain why AU is hiring a security firm to enforce a self imposed curfew? Does this strike anyone else as strange?

I am absolutely no expert when it comes to the tactics used by headcoachs… but it seems to me when you do something like this… you are no longer influencing the team.

  12. Pine Mt Tiger Pine Mt Tiger says:

This is hard to understand. Even if the president has these plans, why let them out before the last game is played? It can not help the team as they prepare to play Ga. & Bama.

  13. CapnVegetto says:

    Good God. Here we go.

So Jay Gogue is an idiot, too. I suppose there is nothing we can do about it.

    Keeping Jacobs is UNBELIEVEABLY stupid.

We’ll be right back here in 3 or 4 years. Same problems, same discussions.

Louisville’s offensive coordinator? OH. MY. GOD. Are we or are we not a supposed top tier FBS program? If his name is being thrown around, we must not be.

This is ridiculous. This university is lead by people with no stones. I guess we’re going to be relegated to mediocrity until they all die.

  14. rn4au rn4au says:

I know I am under the rock most of the time, but what happened to Scott Ethridge? It was all over Birmingham that it was a possibility, and several google searches turn up conversations regarding this possibility as well..Did I miss him saying “heck no!” ?

…..Etheridge was my choice after Housel stepped down. Rumor was that he was passed over, because he wanted to clean house in the Auburn athletic department.

  15. Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

Fire Chizik and replace him with another………Chizik? Seriously…. a loser as a head coach at Southern Illinois? An offensive coordinator from a nothing program in a nothing league?

    Dr. Gouge are you insane?!

  16. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

For whatever reason someone has leaked Dr Gogue’s possible contingency plans and in so doing has given Auburn’s competitors a gift to use against Auburn in recruiting. If Coach Chizik is to be released, we don’t need to give other schools confirmation of the act weeks before it takes place. If it was someone on the inside, I would like to see them identified and fired.

  17. BigDaddyAU says:

Does anyone actually READ the articles objectively?

I will quote Charles Goldberg, whom I believe is the most level headed Auburn Beat reporter; “Auburn University President Jay Gogue could lean on a committee to help him determine the fate of coach Gene Chizik, whose football team is struggling with a 2-7 record.

Gogue is expected to review the status of Chizik, Athletics Director Jay Jacobs and Jacobs’ top lieutenant, Tim Jackson, after the Alabama game on Nov. 24.

Gogue told some trustees he may form a committee to help him reach a decision on the direction of the football program, according to AuburnUndercover.com.”

Now it says he has informed the BOT that he COULD lean on a committee, MAY form a committee, etc etc. Is it not entirely possible that he is doing this to gain outside assistance outside of the YellaFella gang of cronies that Auburn is so famous for? I look at this as unto an audit of a business..you bring in non-partisan folks to look at the entire picture objectively, you take their advice on any number of ideas you have (retain your staff, fire the staff, tweak the staff) and then weigh the unbiased opinions presented.

Two years ago all doom and gloom came around because someone said they had proof Cam got paid…everyone jumped to conclusion…debunked. Enter Sheridan and his bagman…jump..debunk.

I am content to not draw any conclusions based on speculation until a formal announcement is made..and trust me if there is weight to the supposed story there will be a formal announcement..sooner than later…bet on it.

As for name dropping…I doubt Gouge has dropped any names…if the man wants to hire a committee to look at the department then he clearly doesn’t know enough about coaching to even remotely drop names. I’d say that is something someone added in for dramatic effect and to get people all worked up.

    I could be wrong..I don’t think so.

    • Todd92 Todd92 says:

So why say that Jacobs will retain his job and he will “lean on a committee” after famously declaring he “doesn’t hire and fire coaches he hires and fire Atheletic Directors” call it a knee jerk reaction if you want but this stinks to high heaven and the timing of this getting out couldn’t be worse from a morale standpoint or a recruiting standpoint. I’ll leave you to contemplate it in happy happy shiny town.

      • BigDaddyAU says:

The only reason it stinks is because it’s most likely a mis-informed story full of half truths and innuendo. I can almost promise you in today’s day and age if Jay Gouge said something like this you’d have concrete evidence via a recorded phone call or a video as opposed to “he said, she said, my reliable source..blah blah”

The press haven’t had anything negative to write about Auburn this week so their web traffic is down and they needed a boost.

Forgive me, but if you have to have a “pay to view” site like Undercover and you don’t have any new gossip to fuel subscriptions then you half bake a story to get money flowing.

        • BigDaddyAU says:

Oh and one more thing…do you honestly think that other Auburn beat guys don’t have the same sources. If it was 100% accurate I’d bet even money they would ALL have reported it by now…

          • Acid Reign Acid Reign says:

…..All the major Auburn outlets now have a piece up on this. Thus far, every one is citing Marshall’s story, letting him take point (and blame) on it.

          • Todd92 Todd92 says:

And Marshall is top dog of auburn beat writers much as Cecil Hurt is for Bama…. He is allowed in circles others don’t get close to.

          • Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

            Additionally, Marshall is rarely off-base….

  18. AUdacious_Dude says:

It’s outrageous that a loser like Watson is even mentioned in the same breath as AU football. Haven’t we already been down this 5-19 street already? And Gouge wants to hire another? If he effin crazy?

If this happens, my support for AU football is over. What a bunch of morons.

  19. mikeautiger says:

Maybe he mentioned Watson as a possible OC replacement if Chizik is retained and it just got distorted. Ever play the game where a phrase is given to one person and it is repeated down the line in the ear of each other and it changes dramatically by the time it gets to the end of the line.

Marshall may have spoke to several BOT and after they had talked to several people the story changed and they may have all given a little bit different inaccurate story.

I like what someone said, read the article objectively. He might use a committee, if Chizik is released. I live a couple of states away it helps me gain a little prospective as I am not in the state with all it’s emotion everywhere I go.

I have spoke to Gogue on several times on several issues, not football, he does seem to have a good objective management style where would say we will look at the issue with a committee but not one that would say something specific about possible HC candidates at this time.

JJ needs to go. Jackson has his head so far up Chizik’s butt he can’t do his job. I had an issue with tickets in 2010, he is head of tickets, and he would not even let me make an appointment to discuss the issue with him or anyone else, only email through secretary as he was too busy holding Cams hand.

I think if this was the correct story we would have the same story for all the bear writers. Let’s wait and see, the truth will out soon enough. Let’s not borrow any trouble and stir things up for the team. So lets support out kids. Maybe we come up with a couple of big wins.

  20. mikeautiger says:

I think Gogue is a nice guy who may not want to fire anyone. I think he convenes a committee makes a pitch of this being a perfect storm – deaths, new coordinators, young team, Chizik is a good man, recruiting, change coordinator buy out – committe decides to keep coach and Gogue and has someone to take the blame and support him.

I think he drops name of someone worse than Chizik to say we have a great guy her with a NC give him another chance.

Patrino no, Watson no, I like Strong if we are gong to change. I think whoever coaches next year we will have a great year the talent is there and a fresh new year and the kids clear the cobwebs.

Headed to Auburn right now to support my tigers. Looking for an upset and going to support the team to pull it off, hope you will too. Let’s go rock the dogs and the world and start things inthe right direction.
