Gig the Golden Eagles! (Auburn vs. Southern Mississippi Open Thread)
Tigers last met USM 10 years ago
War Eagle, everybody! This afternoon, the Auburn Tigers host the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Both teams are coming off big wins and are looking to successfully continue their respective seasons. For Auburn, it’s a week to work on the offense after gaining just 225 yards in a 34–3 win over Arkansas. For the Golden Eagles, it’s an opportunity to score a major upset of an SEC team in their own back yard. It has happened before. Auburn lost back-to-back games to Southern Mississippi in 1990 and 1991.
This game will kick off at 3:00 PM Central time, on the SEC Network. At kickoff for this one, temperatures should be around 85°, falling to the upper 70’s around sunset. It should be partly cloudy with a slight chance of a shower today at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
As always, feel free to join in and enjoy this thread. I will at the keyboard for my usual play by play on my main desktop! I should be able to operate at full speed this week. I’m hoping for a big Auburn win in game five. Auburn usually starts really tearing opponents up this time of year. War Eagle, and let’s smash Southern Miss!
Our portable DISH network that we use for tailgating has two SEC ALT channels while our U-Verse at home only one alternate. Baumhower’s and our hotel only had the one SEC ALT channel which wasn’t showing the Auburn game. We watched it on my iPhone with the ESPN app so didn’t try and comment and flip back and forth. But reading all the comments this morning shows how good of a job all you good folks did. But let’s not fire Acid just yet.
But, man-oh-man, that O-Line… Or lack thereof.
Well folks…war eagle anyways. This is the deal…the inexperience on the o line is real. It will be the talk of the rest if the year, and we can only pray that they improve each game. Right now, improvement looks minimal.
Stidham has regressed, there’s no doubt about it. Most of it is a confidence issue which is due to our o line, but there are times when he continues to drop back in the pocket, when he should step up in it, and he can’t sense pressure.
Hopefully, this you g offense can figure things out, but I see growing pains this year. We could see losses to MSU and TAMU, as well as definite losses to UGA and BAMA if we can’t get any better. The injuries arent helping either. Let’s enjoy the wins as they come. Gus isn’t worth what we are paying him and that’s a fact.
Georgia has to play at Kentucky the week before hosting Auburn, so there is that. Georgia won’t be able to look ahead to the Auburn game like they usually get to, because the SEC East championship will be on the line that game.
Nearly the end of the 3rd quarter, and Kentucky looks like the real thing. 14-point lead over SC
just a handful of big fans, hanging out.
Thanks to all for the second-half comments. Acid, we ain’t, but we did OK.
I think the staff is trying to address that problem this year… they are probably only trying to sign one back in this class, and it appears that they are focusing on a big bruiser. The smallest back is Noah Cain, and he’s the size of a Michael Dyer. The others they are after look the type that could bulk up to 230 after some training.
Going back in time, remember the “small, fast” running backs in Terry Bowden’s last couple of years? Total disaster. Why am I feeling deja vu all over again?
I haven’t seen anything posted about it. Knowing Gus, his condition will be super double secret, and nobody can ever know.
Anyone know how badly Whitlow’s shoulder is hurt?
We had no choice about the FG. 11 points means game over. If we go for it and miss, then Southern Miss still has a chance.
Field goal. Guess we don’t lose.
Glad we got some points, but not thrilled with a fg
No argument about Kam’s heart – just gets stuffed too often trying to go up the middle.
Where’s Acid when you need him?
Yep – I do believe it’s Tutt’s first INT
At 194 lbs, Kam Martin is a tough runner
Isn’t that Tutt’s first career INT? Came at a really good time. I have heard his name called a couple of times today. Tutt seems to be having a really good game.
Let’s get a TD.
Sorry for calling you apathetic, defense. You’ve saved the day again.
Yac = yards after contact
Yac yards by Martin on that run
Praise the Lord
I think recruiting’s OK. Coaching sucks on offense.
Thank the Lord for our defense.
Interception – War Eagle!
This can be distilled down to poor recruiting and poor coaching
… and wouldnt you know it? He just got sacked again and fumbled at midfield.
And, Kentucky is beating the stew out of a South Carolina team once projected to be second in the East!
And, I don’t buy the stuff about Stidham’s O-line letting him down. A really good QB will find a receiver, not just throw it out of bounds.
At least Stidham can, you know, like, throw accurately. You know. When he does throw. Instead of, like, holding on to it.
Perspective is what counts. Miss. State folks are probably saying the same stuff we are – they’ve got a veteran QB, albeit one coming back from a horrible injury, and are struggling.
yup, MORE COWBELL.
Is that one in Starkville?
Normally I would say that AU is in trouble next week, but MSU has looked infamously bad on offense the past two weeks. Whatever the Vegas line is on next week’s game, I would be the under. It seems that the two teams might struggle to score 20 points combined next week.
74 yards on the ground. 74.
At least Siposs is getting in a bunch of reps. But seriously, Siposs does look like the real deal. Best punter we have had in several years.
I can’t believe we’ve already punted again…..
Yeah – it’s hard to get anything going when losing the battle of the trenches
Well, it worked with Stidham last year. I still think they are trying to run last year’s offense, but they no longer have Kerryon and the offensive line is terrible. Some adjustment has to be made to reflect the new reality.
The whole team has looked like they’ve been sleepwalking since the Washington game. This team looks like they need some on the field leadership. Like Tega saying the OL “relaxed” against LSU. One of their brothers needs to hold them accountable if they take a play off.
If they want an offense that requires a mobile QB, they should’ve recruited one…
That was better defense.
Agree – not sure who this rests with – I don’t think this offense works with Stidham; so it is on the coaches
16 yard line / let’s go
I’m not so sure that this falls entirely on Gus, in his defense. It’s getting really old to hear that every good thing that happens on offense is because of Chip Lindsey, but every bad thing that happens is because Gus is meddling with Chip’s brilliance. There has to come a point when Lindsey starts being held responsible, and I see none of that!
Dragged down behind the line Good stop by au D
USM believes they are going to win. And they have the momentum right now.
Obviously, our “talent level” far exceeds our offensive coaching abilities! Surprised by comments about defense.
Again this falls on Gus.
Well, we are still ahead. But there is too much time left. And our defense looks apathetic. Southern Miss wants to win.
Well, it looks like next week at MSU will be the battle of the terrible offenses. I’m looking forward to another epic battle on the order of the legendary 3-2 game.
Had to punt it away after a Stidham sack where the ball was nearly stripped
What is wrong with SEC Network Alternate???? Hope the Athletic Director blasts them a new one.
O Line simply doesn’t exist
AUful – a new word to describe the Auburn offense.
Now we are one score from being tied with a team that lost to Louisiana Monroe.
This whole team has been unfocused and sleepwalking since the Washington game.
21 – 13
I thought my app was not working! To catch up people who rely on this for updates, the score is now 21-6.
Boy, this page is lively without Acid…
Little dump to the RB has been open all night. JS never looks at them.
I mean I was. Halftime now.
I’m watching it on the ESPN app.
It’s not on WatchEspn
If you can’t find the channel, let me just describe it as horrible offensive play
it’s on channel 330 on Spectrum
Apparently the SEC alternate is not showing the game like they are supposed to be. If you are looking you can watch on the Espn app.
Absolutely atrocious block in the back on that reverse.
Announced that Whitlow is a shoulder injury
Whitlow is on the field but not in pads.
Game is resuming now.
6:52 unless another strike before.
Checking in from a softball tournament. Looks like offense isnt so good. Any word on the delay?
We gave up and stopped for a bite and beverage close to our hotel.
…..I looks like I am out, for the afternoon. Work becons, and this lightning delay does not look like it is ending, any time soon. War Eagle, everybody! Pull ’em through. I’ll have grades up before I crash, tomorrow morning after I watch the rest of the game.
Well, maybe the Auburn offense will come back ready to play.
…..The latest I’m seeing is that Auburn/USM will be delayed till at least 6:00 PM. It’s looking like I won’t even make it to halftime, before heading to work.
…..At Mississippi State in 2012 was wet, too. Rained most of the game. Miserable play by the Tigers that day, too, losing 28-10. Bright spot was an Onterrio McCalebb kick return touchdown.
…..I’ve been to a few wet games, myself. It’s considerable trouble to free up the time, and make the drive. I didn’t go anywhere, either. Wettest game was actually before the game started, for me. West Virginia, 2009. We had to make the walk from the Amsterdam Cafe to the stadium, during the heaviest portion of the downpour. Water was knee deep in the street gutters, at crossings.
I was at that game acid… It poured and I thought we had something special in Jeremy Johnson. Was still pretty awesome seeing all the fans stay through it too.
…..If I am recalling correctly, the last time this happened was in the season opener in 2014, against Arkansas. Jeremy Johnson got the start, and had Auburn out to a 21-7 lead. Auburn lost ole “Mo,” for a while after play resumed. Still powered out for a 45-21 win, in the end.
I hope, Acid. But in my experience weather delays this long essentially start the game over. I hope AU comes back out ready to play again.
…..Perhaps offensive adjustments will prove beneficial, with the extra time.
Auburn just finished one of their better offensive drives of the season, were finding a little bit of rhythm, and then…
…..And rain has begun to fall in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
…..Update, more lightning spotted from the Press Box. It could be quite a while till this game resumes.
…..We should be coming to the end of the lightning delay, assuming the storm has moved away. No word on that, yet.
…..It will be interesting to see how the cowbells affect the Dan Mullen offense. The past nine years, the fans were quiet when Mullen’s offense was on that field!
Hopefully the Florida – Miss State game goes into quadruple overtime this week….
…..Just when we thought Michigan was getting it together.
…..It is quite possible that we could get shunted over.Kentucky/South Carolina is supposed to start on the SECN at 6;30 Central.
wow, upset alert: Northwestern is leading #14 Michigan 17-0
Will we end up on SEC alternate tonight?
UCF’s QB has 197 yards passing– at the half!
…..We can’t. Our tight end decided to transfer elsewhere, last week.
we should try it!
…..I had thought Georgia scored on an inventive tight end sweep. It was, in fact, a quarterback fumble, and Issac Nauta just picked it up and ran it in.
…and the faithful!
…..I believe Chizik lost the confidence of his players.
I envy you. I love the night shift.
…..I am supposedly through with rotating shifts. I’m on permanent night shift, now. No more 4:00 AM alarm clock!
As bad as the OL is, it’s really hard to blame Grimes. The OL fell flat late last year because of “communication problems”, and 4 of the starters were seniors. It wasn’t for lack of experience.
Hope Whitlow will be okay.
Then again he does make a good point.
Kind of hard to listen to Chizik when he lead the team to 3 wins.
do you think so? see, that is why chizik gets paid the big bucks.
Yeah, I work a lot of weekends too. I am on what they call a Panama schedule. Rotating 12 hour shifts between night shift and day shift every 6 weeks, and work half of weekends.
chizik is talking about our running game (lack of) on the sec network…
his premise is new OL is not gelling
penalties show lack of discipline
…..No box score on Vandy/Tn St. I was wondering how the Commodores were doing that badly!
checking the box scores, and Tennessee could only muster 68 yards of offense in the first half vs. Georgia.
…..So far, I’ve been lucky on my work weekends, as far as Auburn is concerned. Vacation for Washington, afternoon game for LSU, and afternoon game today. Tennessee and Georgia are work weekends, too, no news yet on gametime for those. I’m on vacation for the Iron Bowl.
If AU can drive for the score, a 21-3 lead at the half would be nothing to be upset about.
we got you acid!
…..This is a good opportunity to coach up some offensive linemen.
…..The weather delay means I probably won’t get to finish this game. I’ll have to cut out about 6:30 PM. Hopefully Auburn is way ahead by that point.
…..Checking the SEC scoreboard, Tennessee State leads Vanderbilt 13-7, near the half. Georgia is up 17-0 on Tennessee, at the half.
…..Lightning, and officials call a weather delay. That will likely go for 30 minutes.
Louisville just scored a touchdown with 10 seconds before the half, now leading FSU 21-7. Man, watching FSU struggle never gets old.
….Whitlow is headed to the locker room, for a closer look at his shoulder. He’s probably done for the day.
….Abraham has hit 13 of 17 passes, but only for 2.8 yards per pass.
that’s alright, it only means that AU will drive 91 yards before the half instead of about 70 yards.
…..They go to commercial, at 4:27 left in the half. Auburn leads, 14-3, but is backed up at the 9 yard line.
…..64 yard punt!
….Everett in to punt. Pressure, and a good punt, dropped by Davis, has to fall on it at the 9. Misjudged that one.
…..3rd and 8 for USM. Abraham will have 4 wides. Dumps to Moseley, and will be put down after only a yard!
The surprising thing about the OL is that the guards are the ones who seem to struggle the most. Before the season, the tackles were questionable but it was assumed that we were all set at both guard spots.
…..Abraham back in, on 2nd and 8. Here is a swing pass, Harris gets back to the line, and that is all!
…..1st and 10 Golden Eagles. Abraham out? That’s Griggs, on the keeper for maybe two.
…..13 play drive, over 6 minutes that time.
…..Here’s Carlson to boot it deep. Adams and Harris deep, and yet another touchback.
…..I have to hand it to Kam Martin, on that drive. He converted a 3rd and long on a screen, and a 3rd and 1 on a power play.
…..They moved Tega Wanagho over to the right next to Jack Driscoll, AND had Tucker Brown in as a tight end, as well as Chandler Cox over there two. Shwartz got to the corner easily, and no chance for USM, on their alignment.
That too. Lol
Got away with a hold there
It would be nice to get one more TD before the half. Hope we can keep this run game up.
well, say what you will about how bad the offense looks today, believe it or not Auburn has 141 yards today and is winning the time of possession battle.
…..Carlson is up and good, and with 6:43 left in the half, Auburn takes a 14-3 lead!
….uNBalanced line, USM was caught off guard.
…..Half huddle. Stidham under center, speed sweep, Schwartz!!!!!
oh, okay… I don’t have SEC network access, so I can’t watch the game live.
…..First and goal.
…..3rd and 1. Heavy set. Give to Kam Martin, will fight to the six!
same area as LSU game
The play on the 3 yd run loss was on asa…he whiffed his block.
….2nd and 1 at the USM 8. Give Martin up the gut, falls short.
kam knows it is his chance
….Give Kam Martin, gets to the edge, to the eight!
What is wrong with them? They were so bad last week, for sure the seriousness of the situation was impressed upon them.
…..3rd and 15. Double twins. Stidham rolling, finds Martin, will lower his head, and got the first down to the 17!
Coach Grimes plenty of film to correct
Might as well have Whitlow sit out to rest up for the big MSU game next week, have Asa Martin get extra repts today.
…..His second false start of the afternoon.
…..This one is on Harrell.
…..3rd and 10. Trips right. Flags.
…..2nd and 8. Give to Kam Martin, terrible blocking, lost 3.
…..Whitlow with a hand injury?
thank goodness he had a check down…hope boobie isn’t hurt
…..New set of downs. Give Kam Martin, will get just a yard.
Stidham claps very well
…..Kind of a curl to the tail back, nice checkdown!
…..Brings up 3rd and 7. Trips right. Stidham will check again. Will get it to Whitlow, to the 28!
…..2nd and 10 Auburn at the USM 47. Three wides. Screen to Asa Martin, will get to the 44 on a shoestring tackle.
i like the route — no separation though
…..Changing the play. Will throw, batted away from Seth Williams on the slant.
….Williams walks off on his own.
…..Ty Williams made a touchdown-saving tackle, and took a knee to the head doing it.
Southern Miss has 2 NFL Hall of Famers as alumni – Brett Favre & Ray Guy
…..Give Whitlow, will bull across midfield, to the 47!
…..2nd and 6. Twins each side. Changing the play. Here’s A screen to Slayton, will get to the 36, close.
…..Give to the boundary to Whitlow, got 4 on the cutback.
Well our special teams is also undisciplined
…..Auburn dodged a bullet.
All good points…they may have to switch it up.
…..Igbinoghene and Whitlow deep. Shaunfield will kick off. It’s a pooch kick, hits at the 28, and USM NEARLY got that ball!
Well, Calvin Ashley was one of the most coveted OTs in the country, but he showed up about 50 pounds overweight and he hasnt won any playing time. His desire seems to be questionable.
We haven’t developed our OL which is inexcusable in the SEC
…..Holding penalties and false starts aren’t recruiting. That’s just poor discipline.
…..Looks like him, eh? Parker Shaunfield is the kicker’s real name.
For the life of me I can’t understand it…have we really had our head in the sand recruiting for offensive lineman!?!
….With 12:51 left in the half, Auburn’s lead is cut to 7-3.
clay matthews is their kicker?!
….From 44, here the boot, and up and good.
….Not Monday, Javaris Davis broke up that slant.
…..At the Auburn 28, 3rd and 3. Fires left, broken up, Smoke Monday!
…..The offensive line is in disarray. Everyone but the center has already drawn a flag.
…..Give to Moseley, will crack to the 27.
….Igbinoghene beat a block and shoved him out.
…..New set of downs. Pistol set. Swing pass to Moseley, and only got a yard.
War eagle everyone! New to the site. Can someone please tell me what is wrong with our o line?
I suspect that the offensive brain trust is probably going to have to figure out how to play without an offensive line. They are trying to run last year’s offense and it just isn’t going to work with the offensive line they have.
…..Here’s Abraham, lobbing it up the sideline, and Jones is open for a first down to the Auburn 35.
…..USM will have 2nd and 19.
Acid, do you think Kentucky’s got anything?
…..5 of those flags were on the Auburn blocking crew on offense.
…..Auburn had 6 penalties in the first quarter, for 58 yards.
Outback bowl kind of season
i hold lindsay and malzahn responsible for lack of successful passing game… look what he did at Baylor
….Southern Miss had the ball for most of the first quarter, but has only netted 24 yards. Auburn has 63, most of which came on a 46 yard TD pass to Seth Williams.
Offense, we need you. And when do we start holding Stidham accountable? I’m starting to doubt him. Of course, the offensive line needs improvement.
….They keep dumping those quick screens, and Darrell Williams and Deshaun Davis are swallowing those up for losses!
…..That’s the end of the first quarter, and Auburn leads, 7-0.
…..USM will go 1st and 17. Abraham will dump it to Adams, dumped back at the 44!
Looks as bad from my recliner this week as it did from the upper deck last week.
revenge of the laundry
…..Wipes out a good gain.
….Easy holding call.
…..Southern Miss with good field position. Swings it to Moseley, and another flag.
…..Here’s the boot, up to the Auburn 47.
…..Siposs will have to punt with his heels near the inline.
…..Backed up to the 4. Stidham will will take, and has to throw it away.
Horton showed so much promise last year, but this year he seems to be awful.
at least the flags gives the defense time to rest
….4 wides, and another flag. That was Harrell.
…..Backs Auburn up to the 8.
…..Holding, I think that was on Horton.
…..And yet another flag.
…..Brings up 3rd and 4. Stidham will have 3 wides. Give Whitlow, will bull out to the 24!
…..2nd and 13. Twins either side. Stidham firest to Slayton on the out, to the 17.
…..Trying to block 8 guys with 5.
….Give Shivers, lost a bunch.
…..They were trying to get man coverage on the post, Auburn stayed in zone, and no chance for a completion. Dinson was right there, and Auburn takes over at the 12.
…..2nd and 9. Trips to the boundary, will go deep, and picked off, Dinson!
…..Davis and Tutt on the tackle.
…..Jet sweep to Harris, nothing doing!
…..Flags continue to rain on Auburn.
…..That will spot the ball up at the 40.
…..Call on the flag? Unsportsman on Kenny Britt. Ouch.
…..Watkins and Harris deep. Carlson to boot this one, and it is out of the end zone! And a flag?
i like the vertical passing game– Now lets hit some guys running in stride about 8 yards from the line of scrimmage
…..Underthrown ball on the post route, but Williams went up and got it, over a DB who was in position.
…..Carlson is up and good, and with 3:39 left in the first quarter, Auburn takes a 7-0 lead.
stidham got rocked!
…..2nd and 9. Stidham will go deep, Williams! GOT IT!
…..Here’s Stidham, giving to Whitlow, fighting, won’t get much.
…..Great field position for Auburn once again.
…..Everett in, will punt from his end zone, will go out around the 47 of USM.
…..USM will have to punt.
…..3rd and 10 for the Golden Eagles. Screen to Watkins, got out to the 8.
…..Dean could have had a pick six, there.
…..2nd and a long 10. Same look. Abraham to throw, and and tipped into the boundary by Thomas!
…..Three backs. Give to Anderson, leans forward, and won’t get back to the line!
…..And the offense has picked up a holding penalty, an ineligible man downfield, and a false start.
whatever we are working on in the passing game during the week has NOT shown itself yet…
seems life we could just borrow from watching film of the top 10 teams in passing (how to run routes that get separation QUICKLY!)
…..So far, 10 offensive yards on 6 plays. Stidham is 1 of 4 passing.
…..The Auburn offense has yet to post a first down.
…..A 37 yard punt, but USM is backed up!
Looks like we are a team with a strong defense and special teams.
…..Will hurt his average no matter what. Siposs pins ’em at the three!
…..Siposs in to try and pin USM deep.
…..That brings up 3rd and 22. Two backs for Stidham. Checking off. Here comes the blitz! Screen to Whitlow, got to the 40, and that’s all.
…..3rd and 17 from the 40. Two backs, and Driscoll jumps. False start.
…..If they decline, it’s 4th and 5, but in field goal range. They take the penalty.
…..Holding on Tega Wanagho.
…..Diamond set. Will look, and look, and look, scrambles… flag. Stidham got to the 27.
…..Declined, will bring up 3rd and 7.
…..Discussing… Call: Blocker downfield on Auburn.
…..2nd and 7. A quartet of receivers left. Stidham pumps and throws it away.
…..At the USM 33. Give Whitlow, will cut back, got about 3.
…..The upback stepped right in the way of the snap!
…..Ryan Davis deep, Everett to punt, low snap, hit an upback, and Auburn falls on it!
…..3rd and 7. QUick screen to Adams, won’t get there! Good job closing that out, Tigers!
…..USM had the numbers on the edge, but too sharp a cut.
…..2nd and 9. Pistol set. Trips right. Give to Parks, will slide down, got 2.
How many receivers went out on that last 3rd down? #20 was a decoy? not a safety valve?
…..Give to Parks, will get only a yard.
…..Auburn was trying to get a quick score, but instead, they let USM start really working on a time of possession advantage.
…..Auburn went for the bomb on 1st down, and as usual this year, did not connect. Stidham made a pretty good throw, but Seth Williams could not bring it in as he was being held. Behind the chains at that point, Auburn’s offense stalled.
…..Here’s the boot, hits and goes out at the USM 37. 47 yard punt.
….Auburn goes 3 and out. Arryn Siposs in to punt.
…..3rd and 8. Stidham with 2 backs. Three wides. Martin goes in motion. Stidham under duress, throws it away.
….Under center, gives to Schwartz on the sweep, not much. No blocking.
…..That’s a dropped ball, despite the grabs.
…..1st and 10. Here’s Stidham to throw, goes deep! Williams… ripped down by the jersey, and no call.
…..They got Auburn to burn a timeout, and took Ryan Davis out of the return game. Well played, Eagles.
…..Auburn takes over at their 20.
…..Here’s a 4th down play for USM. Wildcat, no. It’s the punter, will pooch it to the goal line, could not down it.
…..We have 10:28 left in the first quarter, still scoreless.
…..At the Auburn 45. Auburn calls timeout, as they had the return team out there.
…..Brings up 4th and 4. Are they going? Yes.
…..Here’s Abraham, directing traffic. Twins each side. Firing on the delayed dig, and Watkins is pulled down short!
….Checking the SEC scoreboard, Georgia leads Tennessee on an end around to tight end Nauta, 7-0. Vanderbilt and Tennessee State are scoreless, early in the 1st on the SEC Alternate channel.
…..USM got one first down on a jailbreak screen, then Auburn was flagged for the second, a familiar theme, this year.
…..Southern Miss has moved to their 49, and has 3rd and 10 when play resumes.
…..We have 11:11 left in the first quarter, no score.
…..Brings up 3rd and 10, possession play. Abraham will take, and he’s calling time with the play clock nearly out.
…..Abraham has 2nd and 10. Taking his time. Shovel it to Adams, no gain!
…..Spot it at the USM 49. Fake, screen, won’t get it to Watkins.
…..That moves it to midfield, new set of downs for USM.
…..Flag… hands to the face on Derrick Brown. Ouch.
…..2nd and 11. Give to Parks, and a parks. Got a yard.
Let’s go tigers.
…..At the USM 35. Two backs. Delay, Parks… lost a yard!
…..3rd and 12. Auburn bringing blitz, and a quick screen, got the first down.
…..Peters with the TFL.
….2nd and 11 USM. Trips left. Motion to the left. Screen for another loss!
…..Here’s a speed sweep, and Adams will lose a yard!
…..USM will start at the 25, in front of the student section.
…..Harris and Adams deep. Anders Carlson to kick off. And this one is 9 yards deep, downed.
…..Here’s the toss! Auburn wins, and defers. Southern Miss will have the ball first.
…..Tigers are on the field!
…..And no. West Virginia will run out the clock on the win.
…..Texas Tech scores, and kicks the PAT, with 38 seconds left. It’s West Virginia 42, TT 34. Onside kick is coming, no doubt.
…..The light dims on Texas Tech. An ill-advised throw for a pick six puts West Virginia up 42-27, with 2:58 left in that game in Lubbock.
…..I saw a few minutes of that one. It wasn’t so much a Clemson rally, as it was a Syracuse meltdown with a lead.
That’s so annoying. Clemson pulled off the last minute win at home vs. big, bad Syracuse. Earlier they backed in to an unimpressive win vs. A&M. So Clemson seems all but guaranteed to walk in to the playoffs because they will probably be undefeated, right? All because they beat Syracuse in the last minute. At home.
Oh, let’s not forget, they do have to play the mighty Duke Blue Devils at home later tthis year, I forgot about that. They gotta get past Duke before they get to walk in to the playoffs.
…..West Virginia is threatening to melt completely down, in Lubbock, Texas. The Mountaineers led Texas Tech 35-10, at the half. Midway through the 4th quarter, Texas Tech has cut the lead to 35-27.
…..Deep Storey bomb underthrown, into double coverage, picked off. Texas A&M will hold on.
…..Clemson is going to escape. 2 late touchdowns, and they lead Syracuse 27-23, with 41 seconds left in that one.
…..Short punt, fair caught at the Arkansas 25. They have 1:51 left, and no timeouts. They trail Texas A&M, 24-17.
…..Mond to throw deep! Too far, and the clock stops for Arkansas! With 1:58 left.
…..Aggies call time? With 2:03 left.
…..Williams stopped for a yard, and that brings up 3rd and 9 for the Aggies. Clock is running, and Arkansas can’t stop it. Will be at 2 minutes when they snap it.
……If Arkansas wasn’t so bad on special teams, they win this game. Allowed a KR touchdown, and made several more punt team errors. With better field position and taking that score off the board, they are better than TAMU, today.
…..Aggies can run this down to under a minute, even if they don’t get another first down.
Well, Aggies struggling at home makes last week’s performance sting a lot less. Now if we can only score 45+ points this week, I would think we could be confident that we are back on track.
…..Ty Storey is suddenly looking like a Heisman quarterback. Arkansas on the TD bomb, with 3:16 left. It’s TAMU 24, Arkansas 17, and the Razorbacks did not use any of their timeouts.
…..It’s a final in Tuscaloosa, Alabama defeats Louisiana 56-14. Tide took it easy on ’em in the 2nd half. It was 49-0 at halftime.
…..It’s 24-10 Texas A&M over Arkansas, with about 5 minutes left in the game.
…..Traveon Williams walks in on the counter, and this game is effectively over.
…..Corner blitzed one too many times. Mond finds the open guy on a slant, and it’s first and goal at the Arkansas 3.
…..We have 6:41 left, Texas A&M has a new set of downs, and a 17-10 lead. Arkansas does have all three timeouts left.
…..And they won’t get it, thanks to a “hands to the face” flag.
…..Arkansas needs a stop.
…..Arkansas called for targeting, but I think they’ll have to pick that flag up. can’t target with a shoulder, can one?
…..Upset watch continues, in Clemson. Syracuse has answered a Clemson touchdown with one of their own. The Orangemen lead, 23-13 early in the 4th quarter.
…. And the Aggies DOINK it off the upright! The score remains TAMU 17, Arky 10.
…..And a QB draw nearly gets Kellen Mond killed. FG unit coming in.
…..And it looks like Jimbo IS playing for the field goal, handing off twice into a stacked box.
…..Texas A&M has put together a drive, and can probably ice this game, even with just a field goal.
Saw a lot of still shots of open AU WRs from last week that Stidham did not see and got happy feet. Cant believe I’m saying this, but any chance we see Sandburg get more time if that continues? Our OL is struggling, but JS is not seeing the field well either.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing too. Unless Stidham suddenly plays championship-caliber football and has a couple of timely 300-yard games in November, he would probably be better off returning for his senior season. That would pretty much guarantee that Willis transfers too.
…..No guarantee that Stidham gets drafted, either. Not if he keeps playing like he has the past couple of weeks…
I don’t see Bryant coming to Auburn, either. He really would be a great fit for Malzahn, and he’s a proven winner. But Auburn really isn’t in a position to take him. He would be a perfect stopgap if Auburn had no good options on the bench and he would be a great stopgap next year until the team gets handed to Nix. But Auburn doesn’t need that kind of player at this time.
….Check that, early 4th quarter.
…..Bama gives up a rushing TD to Louisiana. It’s 56-7, late in the 3rd quarter.
…..Arkansas keeps pinning themselves back inside the 5, so getting in scoring position is a big problem. They’ve been close to giving up a safety twice.
Well, Arkansas may be terrible this year, but it does make me feel a little better to see A&M struggling against them at home. Arkansas has nothing on offense and isn’t even a threat, but Aggies just can’t put them away. Sounds a bit like us last week.
…..More Arkansas special teams gaffes. This time, they failed to field one outside the 20 yard line, and it rolled down to the one yard line.
…..Neither offense is moving well, but Arkansas keeps giving up field position.
…..Those Arkansas special teams… ran into a return man that had called “fair catch.”
…..The talking heads are all over the Clemson drama. ESPN writer Andrea Adelson is tweeting that “Dabo Swinney is going to take some heat for his decision to go with Lawrence, because it led to Bryant’s decision to transfer.”
…..Arkansas special teams continue to be bad. Fair catch on your own 5 yard line? Really?
…..A draw play on 3rd and 21, and Texas A&M will have to punt, with a 17-10 lead over Arkansas.
…..Arkansas was threatening to run a 3 man front with a corner blitz, and Texas A&M got a delay of game flag as a result.
…..One thing that makes me feel good is that Texas A&M’s offensive line is having a lot of trouble blocking the Arkansas front, too.
…..I just don’t see Bryant coming to Auburn. Auburn has 3 pretty talented guys already on the roster at QB, and that’s if Jarrett Stidham doesn’t come back next year. All-Star Bo Nix is coming in, too.
…..The al.com and ESPN were all over “Bryant to Auburn?” rumors, this week.
Wow, man… that thing about Bryant transferring and now Lawrence hurt. The announcers really ripped into Bryant for transferring, too, saying he’s very selfish and what about team first, blah blah blah.
But as an Auburn guy, all I can do is shrug, seeing how we lost a few transfers ourselves. Also kind of makes me wonder, would they ever say that about an Auburn transfer, like oh, that Nate Craig-Myers was soooo selfish? I think not.
…..Syracuse leads Clemson 16-7, at the half in Death Valley.
…..Clemson is suddenly in a bit of trouble, thanks to the new transfer rule. Quarterback Kelly Bryant announced that he is transferring, last week after being benched. Now, new starter Trevor Lawrence took a nasty hit on the sideline, and is likely out for a while with a concussion.
….It is also halftime in Tuscaloosa. Alabama leads Louisiana, 49-0.
…..They take a knee, and it is halftime in College Station, Texas.
….Razorbacks dodged a bullet, trailing 17-7.
…..And then they missed the field goal.
…..Aggies should have had a chance to spike it, or throw for the end zone, THEN call timeout for the field goal. Robbed.
…..Can’t blame head coach Jimbo Fisher for being mad about that one.
…..Referee mistake at Texas A&M. The Aggies ran a draw play for an apparent first down, and the officials did not stop the clock. They let the clock wind from about 22 seconds down to 5, before the Aggies got time called. In scoring position.
…..Midway through the second quarter in both early SEC games. Arkansas spotted TAMU a 14-0 lead, but has shown some grit since. Texas A&M still leads, 17-7.
…..Alabama is playing today on “easy mode,” leading Louisiana 42-0, and it’s not even halftime.
…..Alabama is now up 28-0, late in the 1st quarter. No drama, there.
……Both Alabama and Texas A&M are up 14-0 on the opposition, early in the first quarter. Alabama is taking on Louisiana. (Formerly the Southwest Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns!)
…..So, Arkansas’ is still having special teams woes. I went to the kitchen to pour up some coffee, and the Aggies ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, and then the Arky offense went 3 and out while I was gone for a minute. We may not learn as much as I thought, in this game!
…..OK, I do have ESPN Gameday on the screen, and saw Corso put on a big mask. Is that thing supposed to be a Nittany Lion? It only had 4 teeth! Or is that a bit of commentary on dental practices in the area?
…..And we are live! I’ll be in and out, till kickoff is imminent, today. I will try to catch and comment on a little of the early SEC games, particularly Arkansas at Texas A&M. We’ll hopefully get a bit of an idea of how we stack up against the Aggies, a week after we saw Auburn play Arkansas.
About Acid Reign:.....Still making noise after all these years! Lifetime slacker, dreamer, and miscreant with a knack for calculation. I was born in the United State of Texas, but have spent the majority of my years here amongst the shaded hills of the Tragic City, enjoying glorious smog-enhanced sunsets. In a troubled county, I live in a little slice of paradise between the ridges of Red and Shades Mountains. I've been an obsessive Auburn football follower since the Punt-Bama-Punt days, and have seen a lot of great football on the Plains. This lazy shirker finally learned the value of hard work and persistence from the fine folks in Auburn, and enjoys his return visits immensely! Hobbies include guitar-playing (or really just making loud and weird noise on any sort of instrument or object), cooking, computers, tennis, and old-school pen and paper RPGs. I love getting together with a good drink, great family, and friends..... (Acid Reign is Track ’Em Tigers’ Senior Editor). View Profile →
