Coates Takes Shot at Teammates

By on October 9th, 2012 in Football 18 Comments »

Auburn wide receiver Sammy Coates words are reverberating across the South today, as the redshirt freshman calls out his teammates and offers his explanation as to why this Auburn team is struggling.

Speaking at the weekly media press conference, Coates said, “We don’t have the leadership to win.”

He went on to call out the upperclassmen. “They (coaches) put it on the older guys, but they aren’t showing much.”

Coates says Auburn wanting to win is all talk. “Everybody’s talking about they want to win, but they aren’t showing they want to win. That’s what makes me mad.”

He went on to criticize the quarterbacks, saying they need to be clearer and motivate more. “They talk, but they don’t talk or explain things enough.”

“I want to see one of the quarterbacks step up and lead, the leadership has to come from people in main roles.”

I can’t remember a time when such candor was spoken by a player. What effect it will have on the team will be interesting to watch. Something tells me the coaching staff will not be pleased with Sammie’s appearance this morning.

Wow. I bet we hear more of this soon or we learn that Sammy is a Terrel Owens type personality.

I think his comments are pretty obvious. Mabye he’ll step up and be that leader…

      • Jay Coulter Jay Coulter says:

Agreed. And maybe hold on to 40 yard passes against LSU!

Agree. You can’t wait around for somebody else to step up. When you see the need, you ARE the guy. Now you have to make sure you deliver on the field to set the example by deeds, not just words.

I wouldn’t be too hard on the QBs based on the Arky game. They had almost no pocket sometimes. They need passing plays that allow them to get rid of the ball quickly.

        Recd for truthyness!

Also, it’s pretty obvious in what he’s saying that everyone is looking at everyone *else* to be that leader…although you would hope to naturally see that leadership in your qb. All of this comes down to coaching….or breakdowns therein.

Really? I tried to type h. a. r. d. – o. n., as in “not judge too harshly” and some kind of profanity filter put stars in there.

Now I know why words with an A followed by two esses has stars in it. That’s funny. I guess I won’t be cussin on here.

I hope the coaches are not upset about his comments. Leaders are leaders no matter if they are freshmen or seniors. At least someone is coming up snarling. No one on our team has snarled so far this season.

  4. uglyjoe says:

I have to call BS on this…..I can’t disagree with what he says, but that kind of comment should be reserved for the locker room, in the privacy of the other players…not to the media.

I tend to agree with you UglyJoe. I know he’s frustrated, but this is just going to feed the negative media. Even TET felt obligated to report it, and we’re pro-Auburn. It’s big news when a college player speaks out.

    • Bren Dekura Bren Dekura says:

I think many of us will agree with you on this one. It needed to be said, in front of the TEAM, not the media. Hopefully they’ll explain this to him. Either way, he better step up and prove himself at this point. Big words to back up.
