Chris Davis – Nick Marshall Earn SEC Player of the Week Honors
Chris Davis returns a punt for a touchdown
Auburn had two Tigers selected for South Eastern Conference Player of the Week Honors today for their performance in Saturday’s win over Tennessee – Cornerback Chris Davis and Quarterback Nick Marshall. It was Davis’s first SEC recognition this year and the second nod for Marshall.
Davis sparked a big afternoon for the Tigers’ Special Teams against Tennessee with a 85 yard punt return for a touchdown. It was the first TD scored off a punt return since Robert Dunn ran one back against La-Monroe in 2008. The Special Teams set a school record with 312 combined return yards on the day. When Cory Grant scored on a 90 yard kickoff, it marked the first time in the history of the program that the Tigers scored both on a kickoff and a on punt return in the same game.
Marshall was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week after accounting for 3 touchdowns – one through the air and two on the ground. His 214 rushing yards is tied for the third-best rushing performance for a quarterback in Auburn history.
To date the Tigers have garnered eight SEC Player of the week honors for the season. Nick won the honor after the Texas A&M game. Robenson Therezie earned Defensive Player of the Week after the Washington State game, Jeremy Johnson was twice chosen the Freshman of the Week after the Western Carolina and Florida Atlantic games and Carl Lawson was named Freshman of the week after the Ole Miss game. Tre Mason was named last week’s Offensive Player of the Week after the Arkansas game.
In addition, Marshall was recognized Sunday by Athlon Sports as the National Offensive Player of the Week. Congratulations to these Tigers and War Eagle!
