Philip Marshall has reported via email/twitter that, “…all signs point to Charles Kelly being named Auburn’s next defensive coordinator.” Kelly is the current Florida State DC.  Auburn 24/7 is saying that an announcement could come as early as today. Marshall also says on his site that, “,,,numerous sources say that’s where Auburn’s search for a replacement for Will Muschamp is headed.”

The article is behind the paywall – unless viewing on a mobile device, which I don’t understand – but I won’t quote any more here. Could Kelly be the guy?

What are your thoughts on this potential hire?

The $$$ we have been spending the last 10 yrs on coaches, need to get someone very good and quickly. Players are de-commiting at an alarming rate.
Do not see how a DC from ACC is going to be good enough.

Well, a Kelly lead defense was #6 in total points allowed, #13 in yards allowed/play, #18 in allowed passing yards, and #9 in first downs allowed. A weakness was his rush defense, but I haven’t done the research to see if that was an execution or defensive strategy issue. This could be an issue because there will be Henry and Fournette-like RB’s all over the SEC next season. Regardless, those numbers are waaaaaayyyy better than any numbers Auburn put up this season…..so to me, the choice says: Improvement.

My only concern is: how long will he stay? We need some continuity.

As an aside, and a very glassbowlly comment: CWM is making some interesting choices for his new coaching staff. Very interesting…….

Well….just being devil’s advocate to the original concern. The fact remains that those glorious statistical achievements were made in the ACC….AND a poor run defense might lead to a screechyface emoji disaster-type of season…..But, all things considered, still (in my opinion, everyone’s miles may vary): improvement.

Now, if Auburn were seriously pursuing the DC at Wisconsin…..um, yeah: unabashed cartwheels!!!!

It’s often interesting to see what the other schools say about these kinds of matters:

Upon reading the comments, one thing stands out: That is one classy bunch down in Panhandle-Land.

    • Tiger Tiger says:

      Haha, no kidding.

I grew up in the Panhandle. Most of the Noles I know are actually pretty nice and are FSU grads, but I think it could be pretty rowdy in their breeding ground.

Seminole territory really starts around Panama City, heading east. Mostly Auburn and Florida people, west of that area. Plenty of Bammers, too. Everywhere in Lower Alabama, you’ll see them oozing into corners and lurking in the shadows. They remind me of bacteria.

If Malan doesn’t put a decent offense on the field, it won’t matter who the new DC is.

  4. Acid Reign Acid Reign says:

…..My worry with Kelly is the attitude of guys like Rodney Garner, Dameyune Craig and Lance Thomas, who will have been passed over for a younger guy.

…..Remember how that was, when the BBQ gang of Nall, Emsminger, Knox and Gran were served a dose of Tony Franklin a few years back?

    • Tiger Tiger says:

Yeah, it would be great if the new DC can work with the guys we already have, instead of having to let everyone go. Garner and Thompson are doing a good job of holding this year’s recruiting class together, to their credit.

    • Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

Yeah, but Tony Franklin had a goofy* system too…..so there was A LOT going on there. I’m somewhat scarred by the whole Tony loading a box into his car and leaving deal…..

*goofy only because we had not run such an offense before, and because of that it looked alien and ugly in execution……

      • Acid Reign Acid Reign says:

…..Much like this past season, quarterback play was a big factor in the 2008 faceplant. Franklin’s system worked before, and it worked again at Louisiana Tech a few years ago. Spike Dykes and Franklin moved to a woeful Cal squad around 2013, and it was bad offense on a 1-11 team. Things have been picking up, though. They jumped up to 459 points scored in 2014, and this year they’ve score 495 and are heading to the Armed Forces Bowl. And, Texas is interviewing Franklin for the Longhorn OC position. Cal was held below 30 points only once this season, and averaged over 41 points per game. Exactly once in Auburn history has Auburn averaged 41 points per game, and that was with Cam in 2010.

…..In 2008, Auburn had Kodi Burns, and still knee-damaged Neal Caudle on the roster. After bowl practices, Franklin went with a 2 quarterback system against Clemson in the Chick-Filet bowl. Brandon Cox was custom-made for the Franklin offense and excelled in that game. Burns provided a running spark. Unfortunately, Cox was finishing his 6th season at Auburn, and was out of eligibility. Franklin hedged his bets, by bringing in JUCO transfer Chris Todd. Unfortunately, Todd turned out to have a damaged throwing shoulder. Franklin basically had no one to accurately deliver the ball, AND an offensive staff that didn’t believe in the offense.

…..And yes, the Bolt is still up at AUC, and Phillip Marshall isn’t a guy to label speculation as news. This is probably close to being a done deal.

  6. wde1988 wde1988 says:

    Love and respect Phillip Marshall.

On Auburn sports they are showing Malzahn at a press event for the bowl… and i swear Malzahn gets there late! His freaking collar looks like he just got dressed and he even admits he was doing something else and he is sorry he is late!!

    Taking a breath.

They are saying that Malzahn wont comment on Kelly. A couple days ago he was politely saying no.

Malzahn says he wont hire someone that is one and done. He wants someone permanent.

Now here is some skinny…. if he does land an Auburn alum Malzahn wont be fired for at least two years.

    I am ok with that.

We will live or die with Gus by jimny.

Please somebody dress the man and ensure he has cue cards.

    • JaySun says:

I’m OK with that too. We need continuity on both sides of the ball. That being said I read on SDS that Lashlee is interviewing for HC at Tulane. Anybody else know anything about it?

      • wde1988 wde1988 says:

Mentioned before that this might happen.

Hope it does. Heard there might be another school that was also looking at him as well.

Gus needs to be a coach.

I think Kelly is a solid choice “IF” we can keep him from being a one and done. The unfortunate truth in today’s coaching environment is a performing coordinator will always be a target as a head coach. A properly written contract could mitigate that somewhat. If we promote from within then you may get a longer tenure, but lesser immediate results, so there is a trade off. I am torn here, but I think an established DC has a slight edge right now.

I believe any solid DC can adapt to a run defense and assuming the players are there Kelly can make it work. While the ACC is not quite the same as the SEC they are producing as well or better than the SEC East. Another key is keeping recruiting going and the other coaches on board.

  9. JaySun says:

So, I wonder who’s next on the list? We’ll see…

  10. Well, guess you guys hadn’t gotten the word. 12/13/2015. Kelly ain’t coming. Wish he would but I don’t blame him for not leaving a solid program for a has been one. a wanna be one, Maybe a will be one. He has too much to lose. Before we just jump at any body, give Rodney a shot, now that we missed Travarius Robinson. We can’t afford to lose Rodney Garner. While I’m on the stump, hire Franklin as OC before he goes to Texas. Lashlee should go and maybe he will.
Again I keep harping about stadium expansion. We are far behind. But we have the largest scoreboard like any one outside of Auburn gives a rip. Its like bragging “we have 110 players in the band. You only have 99.” Come on Jay, ramp it up. Others have and we sit around and say we can’t. Like we are sitting around now doing nothing about coaches while good guys are signing up. So, what does Second Bridge know?
