Breaking News: Sunny Golloway Out as Auburn Baseball Coach

By on September 27th, 2015 in Baseball 7 Comments »

The Auburn baseball coach has been fired by Athletic Director, Jay Jacobs. “I regret to announce that earlier today I dismissed Auburn head baseball coach Sunny Golloway with cause,” Jacobs said. “My commitment will always be to provide the best student-athlete experience in the nation, and we will not accept anything else.”

Golloway had been the skipper for the last two years, but it has been a tumultuous stay.  It has now come to an end.

Word is, assistant coach Greg Norton will assume coaching responsibilities til a new coach is hired.

We will have more to come soon as it is made available.

I cannot really show any shock over this. I have thought for a little while now that this would occur at some point.

    “With cause”….. What he’d do?

      Bad grammar…..what did he do?

Golloway had a dismal record of 62-50 overall and 23-37 in the SEC but the roots of today’s dismissal began in Golloway’s first year when he allegedly mistreated some players, including kicking some veterans off the team. He almost lost his job back then. There has been complaints from some family members every since.

He also didn’t help himself when he embarrassed school officials last year when he got into a profanity laced screaming match with another coach at a home baseball game.

While it’s not entirely clear what caused Jacobs to pull the trigger this time, it wasn’t a vote for his job security when Jacobs hired Randy Dickey with responsibility as a “student athlete’s advocate” for the baseball program. However, al.com reported today that, “The firing arrives amid compliance concerns under Golloway’s watch, according to sources.”

So short of a definitive statement from the AD, it appears Golloway was already on the bubble and the “compliance” issue provided the trigger for the dismissal.

Not a surprise. The rest of the major coaches brought in found success and none of them ran their mouths or made promises that they couldn’t keep.

This guy started out on wrong foot. He basically threw the team under the bus his first year. Then his second he seemed so fake and distant.

    Not surprised.

I think this was coming ever since he threw those players under the bus. It was just a question of when – it just happened sooner than later.
