Auburn’s National Signing Day- 2014 (an open thread)

BfuUzBLCUAA2yWD - Auburn war room

                                                           Auburn’s war room.

War Eagle everyone. Today is the day that football prospects across the country will sign their National Letters-of-Intent. Players will start faxing their letters to the colleges of their choice this morning at 7 a.m. CT.

I know many of you are used to KoolBell doing this annual Signing Day Post here at Track ‘em Tigers but he is out of town this morning and unable to run the open thread. However, knowing Kool like I do, I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds a way to pop in and add some of his thoughts to our discussion. So lets get to it.

Last year Malzahn’s staff put together a No.9 to No.11 class in a short time frame after being hired in December. It looks like his second group will be another strong one as Auburn begins National Signing Day with a class already solidly ranked in the Top 10 by every recruiting service. In addition, four of the top seven prospects in the state are committed to Auburn and the Tigers can add a fifth if Auburn High’s Rashann Evans signs today. He is scheduled to make his choice known at 10 a.m.

The Tigers are looking to have a class of 23-25 players. Assuming no players on their commitment list flip, and they sign one or two of the three big names left on their board, Malzahn’s second class could finish in the top five.

Auburn got a good head start on this class by already signing five of the nation’s top Junior College players, all of whom are already enrolled and on campus. Those five juco’s are:
* D’haquille Williams, Wide Receiver and the No.1 overall prospect in the nation.
* Xavier Dampeer, the No.1 ranked Center in the nation.
* Derrick Moncrief, the No.1 ranked Safety.
* Chris Laye, 3-star Tight End
* Stanton Truitt, 4-star Athlete

That leaves 16 NLI faxes expected in the Athletic office today and maybe three to four more from uncommiteds. The three big names that Auburn is still in the hunt for are:
* 5-star-star linebacker Rashaan Evans
* 4-star offensive guard Braden Smith
* 4-star Defensive End Andrew Williams

We started this morning at 5 a.m. CT and will continue thru 2 p.m. giving you the latest news on which athlete has sent in his Letter Of Intent and try to provide as much information as possible on each new student athlete as we get word of their commitment.

Of course we will not be the first to get you this information, we will leave that up to the paid recruiting sites: autigers.comRivals.com, and 247sports.com. However, if you want friendly discussion of the happenings of Auburn’s 2014 recruiting class and as accurate as possible updates … then stick with us during the day.

Good morning ATM. Appreciate you running the thread this morning. I’m looking forward to a good day on the Plains. I’m off to work but I’ll be checking back. War Eagle!

  4. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Welcome Kalvaraz Bessent, CB from St. Mary’s, Ga.

    • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

      Kalvaraz is : 4-star CB – 6-0/170

      • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

He represents the new shift in Auburn’s secondary as cornerbacks coach Melvin Smith, who loves length in his corners, looks for taller players to make plays on the ball and match up against tall receivers..

  5. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Welcome to . Raashed Kennion: 3- star WDE – 6-6/228 – First Coast (Jacksonville, FL)

He brings length to defensive end great athletic potential, meaning he could develop into a pass rusher

  6. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Third signee is pro syyle QB Sean White

    • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Sean is 4-star QB – 6-2/204 from University School (Fort Lauderdale, FL)

      Welcome Sean!

      • DothanTiger DothanTiger says:

Sean is a great get for Tigers. And I like that he didn’t play any games with staff. Was committed all along. welcome Sean

      • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Sean won’t start for a couple of years but he has plenty of time to learn from Marshall and Johnson during his first season – should be a good one down the road.,

  7. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Lets go fax machine, start humming again.

  8. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

I thought the Tigers might put emphasis on defense in this class but with 11 commits on that side of the ball, the list is about 50%.

    • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

If we count all the players listed as ‘athletes” for defense, we could say there would be 14 on that side of the ball.

  9. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

DaVonte Lambert, DT from Keysville, Ga.,just faxed in his letter.

  10. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Nick Ruffin, CB from Duluth, Ga is on board.

He is a 4-star CB – 6-0.5/180 from St. Pius X (Atlanta, GA)

  11. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Welcome Justin Thornton, DE from Prichard, Ala.

    • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

      Justin is a 4-star WDE – 6-5/222 – Vigor High

With a lenghty frame, Thornton projects as a rush end, a quick player capable of getting to the quarterback from the outside.

  12. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Kamryn Pettway, RB from Prattville, Ala. just signed with the Tigers

    • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

He’s a between the tackles runner with good hands our of the back field. he rushed for 1,402 yards and 17 touchdowns last season at Prattville High,

  13. AUwaterboy says:

I think Pettway is going to be as good as the Roc has been projected. Can you say Cadalac and Brown in the same back field? I’m loving it!

  14. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Stephen Roberts, FS from Opelika, Ala., is officially in the family.

  15. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Welcome Jakell Mitchell, HB from Opelika, Ala.

  16. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

DT Devaroe Lawrence just signed with the Tigers1

    • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Devaroe is a 4-star DT – 6-3/278 – from Greenville, SC went to Georgia Military College (Milledgeville, Ga)

Lawrence is rated the 19th-best defensive tackle in the country and the seventh-best prospect overall in the state of Georgia.

      Welcome Big D!

  17. DothanTiger DothanTiger says:

Checking back in ATM. how many left on our board?

  18. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Welcome Myron Burton Jr., WR from Lawrenceville, Ga to the Family

  19. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Mobile native Tre’ Williams is in!

    • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Williams is one of the nation’s most highly-coveted linebackers a Parade All-American, he is rated the nation’s No.2 Inside line backer,& the No.4 player in the state.

      Welcome Tre!

  20. Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

AubTigerman I think Myron Burton faxed in his LOI to AU.

  21. Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

Morning everyone! Looks like a less dramatic day than a few years ago!

When do we hear about Mr. Evans?

  22. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Most of our 21 Commits are in the fold.

Still waiting on Roc Thomas , Dontavius Russell, and Markell Boston:

    • Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

Wow! UF flips Treon Harris from Free Shoes U.!

    • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

if we get those 3, this class will be rated as high as no.7 in one recruiting service and could move into the top 5 with one or more of the uncommitted targets that have us on their final list – ie. Evans. Either way it’s another great haul by our coaching staff.

  23. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Roc Thomas, RB from Anniston, Ala and Mr football in the state of Alabama is official

    • Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

I watched this kid play several times. He has the potential to be very, very special.

  24. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Only the second time in program history that Auburn has signed back-to-back Mr. Football winners joining 2013’s Jeremy Johnson

  25. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Gus just told ESPN’s Kerri Potts what the Tigers looked for this year:

“Character and ability, those two things combined, that’s what we went after.”

  26. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Welcome to the Auburn Family DT Dontavius Russell!

  27. KoolBell KoolBell says:

Off to a great start this morning.

    • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Good to hear from you Kool man. I got a new appreciation for you trying to handle this.

Computer locked up just as Russell’s letter came through. went into panic mode. Now using my lap top,

  28. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Only have Markell Boston (who committed Monday) still left on the board from our original 21.

  29. Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

I think Rivals Auburn page crashed.

  30. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Dontavius Russell will just add to what is already strong depth on the Tigers Defensive line.

  31. MyAuburn MyAuburn says:

I think the whole site crashed. Looks like NSD was too much for it.

  32. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Still waiting on Markell Boston’s NLI.

Evans announcement coming up at the top of the hour.

  33. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Ike Powell, LS from Chula, Ga. has signed with Tigers That makes it 20 with 2 left on the board.

    • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

I don’t think anyone saw that coming. Welcome Ike & War Eagle!

    • el757 says:

He’s going to grayshirt so he won’t count against this year’s class (per 247 Sports/Bryan Matthews). But he’s showing up on AuburnTigers.com so I’m a little confused.

  34. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

It’s time – waiting to hear from the local guy

  35. Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

Any word from Andrew Williams yet?

  36. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

The surprise get so far is Ike Powel. He’s rated as the No. 6 long snapper by 247 Sports and is a ProKicker All-American who earned All-Region honors as an offensive lineman at Tiff County High, Ga.

  37. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Welcome to Deshaun Davis, 4-star Line Backer from Mobile, Ala.,

  38. tigertracker says:

Welcome Braden Smith. One of the top uncommitted prospects that remained on the OL.

  39. Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

Well, I might be around for the Evans announcement after all….

    We are looking great today!!

  40. tigertracker says:

ESPN never ceases to amaze me. Rece Davis just said, “with all due respect to Nick Marshall, Dak Prescott might be the best returning QB in the SEC.”

    /SMFH

  41. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Where’s Markell Boston’s NLI? … Said Tigers was his dream school on Monday.

  42. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Auburn site now says they have OL Braden Smith’s NLI. Welcome to the Auburn Family.Braden!

    • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Smith is from Olathe, Kansas and is a 5-star OG. Checks in at 6-6/292. That should put the Tigers in the Top 5 – WDE!

  43. tigertracker says:

So Tennessee signed 35….you heard that right….THIRTY-FIVE!???
ESPN reporter said some leftover schollys from last year were used, some preferred walk ons, and some schollys from next years class? How the heck? I thought the SEC put a cap of 25 per class on a few years ago to combat oversigning. And using next years schollys? I think I stepped thru the wormhole or something.

  44. tigertracker says:

    Evans announcement coming now…

  45. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

About what I expected …Rashann goes with his homey Reuben – picks that school on the other side of the state.

    • Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

For whatever reason, Auburn HS seems to have an anti Auburn University lean.

      • Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

        Hangover from Trooper Taylor?

      • tigertracker says:

I hate we lost him, but I wouldn’t want to go to college in my back yard. I love Auburn, but if I had grown up there I’d want to get away too. Not saying that’s the reason he left, but that almost plays against us. Sure you’re parents can see you play every saturday, but they could also drop by unannounced etc during the week. All I can say is he better slow down on the weights and up the cardio if he wants to beat us.

    • Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

I’m OK with that. In the end, I really didn’t want Reuben. Additionally, from what I read, his Evans’ dad didn’t seem that hot on Auburn-because of lack of playing time.

I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, but that’s just me.

      • Tigerstripe Tigerstripe says:

That sucked not getting Evans because the kid’s got the goods.

        • Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

Yeah, but…..one kid does not make or break a team. Bama has been ‘more talented’ for years, and yet were dismantled by the HUNH……FSU was ‘more talented’ and they came very close to *not* winning the MNCG. Just sayin’.

If I’m going to Barn, I’m going Barn hard……

  46. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

We got one of the three big names still on the board with Andrew Williams still uncommitted. Who knows may wind up with 2 outa 3.

    • Tigerstripe Tigerstripe says:

Saban is definitely recruiting for the HUNH option read…

      • Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

That’s fine. They can get the personnel in…but they’re gonna need to be able to call better plays. Saban is going to have to adjust his Process….so yeah, good luck with that…..

  47. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Safety Markell Boston has finally sent his NLI in. wecome Markell!

  48. tigertracker says:

Any chance we get revenge on the kouandjio, yeldon, and foster flips and the only thing that comes thru the bama fax machine is a note saying “SUCK IT SABAN”?

  49. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Markell’s NLI gives the Tigers a class of 23 and what most likely will be a Top 5 class. Lets Here’s hopind Gus Coralls Andrew Williams before it’s over.

  50. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Well folks. I’m late for work. I’ll check back in about 30 min.

HOPEFULLY SOMEONE CAN KEEP AN EYE OUT for anymore additions and POST THEM FOR US while I’m gone. Fingers crossed for Williams.

It’s been a great morning. See ya in a few.

  51. Tigerstripe Tigerstripe says:

We’ll end up with a top 10 recruiting class if you put any weight on that kind of stuff. I like that our coaches seemed to get who they wanted so we are filling positions with who fits what we are doing. I’d rather have hungry 3* with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove than a 5* prima donna with an inflated ego. Keep in mind what Seattle Seahawks accomplished this year with ‘average’ players.

    • Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

      Yes, yes and YES!!

      Well said!

    • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

      Well said indeed Tigerstripe.

Also, remember a few years ago when a little mentioned Tre Mason signed with Auburn and look how that turned out.

      • tigertracker says:

Agree, but not gonna turn my nose up at Roc Thomas, Tre Williams, and D’haquille Williams. The first two have been committed to AU for a long time and never wavered, nor did I read any prima donna comments from them. Lots of these guys, especially the mobile crew, have been buddied up for a while now.
The family atmosphere at AU isn’t lost on this class from what I can tell. Hopefully they believe in work, hard work and will push the current players and themselves to get even better.

We did fill alot of needs, but I’m most curious about QB. JJ didn’t seem like much of a runner in the few opportunities he got to run and Sean White (Elite 11 QB MVP) is considered a pro style QB. With the departure of the battering ram that was Jay Prosch and the smorgasbord of young options now available at WR the future is bright indeed. We’ve all read about Gus tailoring the offense to the skill set of the players. I think we’ll always be a run first team with Gus, but the passing attack that will surely develop in the next year or two is gonna be deadly!

        • AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

          Good analysis TigerTracker.

I agree the Tigers filled their needs nicely. And I like what Gus told ESPN today when asked what he looked for in a recruit.

“Two things. Good character and ability.”

You have those two, you will always do good.

  52. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Before Andrew Williams visited UGA last week, it looked like he was almost a lock for Auburn. Then Georgia came on strong. Now it’s a toss up and his delay in signing probably means he is conflicted.
This thing might not be over today. Could go into tomorrow or longer.

Either way, you got to be proud of the hard work done by our coaches. It’s a great top 10 class and may finish even higher. We’ll keep monitoring the situation.

Got to do some work now (to pay the bills). But tonight looks like a Waffle House night! Thanks again and …

    War Eagle!

    • tigertracker says:

ESPNU said Williams to announce at 2pm eastern…in about 5 minutes. I’ll hang around and post the results assuming he announces as planned.

      • Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

Looks like Williams is headed to The Plains!

        • el757 says:

War Eagle!! CBS sports has us as the 7th class….nice work!!

ESPN3 threw me. I was getting twitchy since it never came on espnu and then work got in the way ;)

Outstanding class and this is just our staff’s second season recruiting together at AU! I can’t wait to see what they do after they really establish relationships with HS players and coaches! The next few years are going to be amazing!

  53. Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

Don’t we have one spot left or are we donesies??

  54. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Just able to sneak back in to check the news on Andrew Williams. His signing is great news to cap off a great recruiting class.

That means we got 2 of the 3 big undeclared names that were still on the board at the start of the day. I’ll take that any day. Thanks to TigerTracker, El757, and Third Generation Tiger for your help in posting the signees, especially for hanging around to see what would happen with Williams. Good job guys.

  55. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

Auburn should move up in the rankings after this day.

When Tigers had 20 commitments on Monday, they were ranked No. 7 in the 247Sports Composite, No. 9 by Rivals, No. 9 by ESPN and No. 10 by Scout. So this class should push them higher and quite possibly in the Top 5 on one or more list.

Must say I was nervous to attempt substituting for KB but I guess it went ok. As usual we had much more page visits than commenters (over16,000 on our counter). It was my first open thread and I hope we added to your day in some small way. So thanks to all who stopped by and …

    War Eagle!

    • Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

Thanks for keeping us up to speed.

    • War_Eagle_2010 War_Eagle_2010 says:

Awesome job, I’ve been in training all day so I wasn’t able to keep up close myself so I’m indebted to everyone who broke down the signings today.

    • MyAuburn MyAuburn says:

Great job Paul, with all the information/misinformation out there it is easy to miss something. I am happy with who we got and think we filled some great needs. As usual Bammer got the #1 class but after a few of them, get arrested, flip, grayshirt, don’t qualify or the like they won’t have anything on us. It happens every year.

  56. Acid Reign Acid Reign says:

…..I wish I could have been here. We did pretty well, all things considered. Flipping two top DBs from Bama (Bessent and Roberts) from Bama was particularly delicious. Bama’s secondary hurt them the last two games, and I’m sure that stung!

…..So, we lose Tre Mason, but get the best running back on the board. And we’ve got the best JUCO receiver in the nation here, also. It’s going to be interesting to look it all over, in a few hours.

  57. domaucan1 domaucan1 says:

Thanks to everyone who did such a great job today. We really appreciate your work and effort for the Auburn family. People like you guys are the main reason that, WIN OR LOSE:

IT’S GREAT TO BE AN AUBURN TIGER !!!

    GO BIG BLUE !!!

Did y’all see Rashaan Evans’ mom’s face when he put that hat on? It was priceless!
Great class! I think we have something to be very excited about.

  59. AubTigerman AubTigerman says:

    The day after:

According to 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings (which equally weigh the ratings of all the major recruiting services) the Tigers are ranked presently at No.6 this morning. So it was truly another very successful NSD for the Auburn coaching staff.

And thanks to everyone for the kind words at the end of this thread!

    War Eagle!
