Auburn Women Win 3rd Place In NEW York Life Holiday Tournament
“We gutted one out. It was definitely a gut-check time for us and the kids really came out pressing and really working hard,” said Auburn Head Coach Nell Fortner after her Tigers won the consolation game of the New York Life Holiday Tournament. The games were hosted by Hofstra University in Hampstead, New York.
Auburn freshman Hasina Muhammad led the scoring with 16 points as the Auburn Women (7-4) defeated Central Connecticut State 49-40 to take 3rd place in the tournament.
Auburn sealed the deal by playing great defense. They forced 37 Blue Devil turnovers and made 16 steals. Junior Blanche Alverson‘s performance of six steals ties her for ninth place on Auburn’s single-game steal record.
The Tigers scored 28 points off of turnovers. Coach Fortner said she was proud of her Tigers and added. “The tough thing was the points were not coming easy. We were working extremely hard on the defensive end, creating a lot of turnovers. They are a team that does not quit, they are a hard-nosed team. I am just proud that we hung in there and didn’t quit, we kept fighting hard.”
That’s the Auburn way… keep on fighting – “never to yield.” Congratulation ladies, we are proud of you too!
