Lost in the news hype that comes this time of year with the Super Bowl is the fact the Auburn women’s basketball team is playing some pretty good ball. The Tigers completed a season sweep of arch rival Alabama Sunday with a 59-55 victory in Tuscaloosa.
It was the third consecutive win for Auburn (16 – 8). The Tigers led by one point at the half and built a 15-point lead in the third quarter. Alabama (14 – 10) did close the gap to three points in the final minutes, but Auburn shut the door with clutch free throw shooting to seal the win.
Auburn shot 47.8 percent from the field overall and hit an astounding 64.3 percent in the third quarter. “In the third quarter, we really looked to attack,” said Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. “I thought Katie (Frerking) did one of her best jobs of being aggressive and attacking. And we turned them over in the third quarter. That was huge.”
Frerking scored 22 points, and had four steals, three rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. The junior was on fire, shooting 8-of-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Brandy Montgomery was also in double digits with 11 points.
“It was a hard-fought one,” Williams-Flournoy said. “We really had to get out there and fight for that victory. [We] were not playing like we were supposed to win. We had to have the mindset that we were going to come out and attack them right away, and that’s what we did.”
Auburn is currently in a deadlock with Texas A&M, and Georgia for fourth place in the league. However, three of its five remaining games will be played at home. One of those will be against TAMU and another against third place Florida.
So the Tigers are looking to finish strong and are in good position to make up some ground before SEC Tournament play begins March 2 in Jacksonville.
Auburn plays again Thursday night when it travels to Oxford to take on the Ole Miss Rebels. Here’s to hoping the Tigers continue their three-game winning streak.
