Auburn Softball Playing Important Series With South Carolina
Much like Auburn’s Baseball Team, the Tiger Softball team is trying to complete the season with a strong finish to propel them into the SEC Tournament.
The Tigers are playing in Columbia this week end in an important three game series that may determine if they can make the eight team field in Tuscaloosa May 10 -12.
Auburn took the first game Friday night 1-0 on an Amber Harrison home run. It was the senior’s 14th home run of her career and her first this season.
It was a good time for Amber to get that first homer too, since it was the only offensive scoring by either team for the night.
With two outs in the seventh inning, and Auburn nursing the one run lead, pitcher Lauren Schmalz forced South Carolina’s Kristen Struett to foul out on a 1-2 pitch to end the game. Seniors Jenee Loree and Schmalz combined to pitch a three-hit shutout.
Auburn Head Coach Tina Deese said, “This was a really good win and our seniors really stepped up to get it for us.”
The victory improved Auburn’s record to 29-19 overall and 8-15 in the Southeastern Conference and protected their current eighth place position in the SEC standings.
In Saturday’s game, Elizabeth Eisterhold’s two-out, solo home run in the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie game and gave Auburn the win in both the game and the series over Carolina. The Tigers will attempt to sweep the Gamecocks Sunday at 12 noon CST.
Fans can follow the game on radio at www.auburntigers.com as well as WEGL 91.1 FM in Auburn.
