Auburn Softball Opens Season with 3 Wins in Plainsman Invitational

By on February 9th, 2013 in Other Sports 1 Comment »

Morgan Estelle scored the first run Friday for the Tigers start of the 2013 SEC season.

The Auburn softball team opened the 2013 season this weekend with three wins in the Plainsman Invitational. The Tigers defeated Furman 9-1 and East Tennessee State 11-3 on Friday and turned back Kent State today at Jane B Moore Field in Auburn.

The Tigers did it with rallies against EastTenn. State on Friday and again today against Kent State.

Today’s game was tied after six innings, when Morgan Estell drew a walk to open the top of the seventh and then advanced to third on a wild throw to first that allowed Branndi Melero to make it to second base. On the next pitch, Brooke Lathan hit a 2-RBI single driving in both runners and give the Tigers what would turn out to be a 5-3 victory.

Auburn Head Coach Tina Deese said she was proud of the way her players fought back. “We had a lot of different people step up and come through with big plays. Austyn West delivered a big home run and Brooke came through in the seventh. This was a good win for us, but we have to keep improving.”

Auburn (3-0) will play Army at 11:30 a.m.and Austin Peay at 2 p.m. Sunday. Go Tigers. Keep it going!

UPDATE: Tigers won both games Sunday, beating Army 8-0 in the first game and Austin Peay 9-1 in the second game to complete a perfect weekend 5-0.
