Auburn Men’s Tennis Gets Historic Win

By on October 8th, 2012 in Other Sports 2 Comments »

The Auburn Doubles Team made history Sunday with the winning of one of the most prestigious tournament titles in college tennis.

The duo of senior Andreas Mies and junior Daniel Cochrane won the main draw doubles final at the ITA All-American Championship. It was Auburn’s first ever title at the All-American Championships.

The championship ranks among the three biggest in the history of the Auburn program; the other two being the 2005 Wimbledon doubles title for Stephen Huss and the 2002 NCAA doubles title by Andrew Columbo and Marc Kovacs.

What makes the victory even more impressive is that Mies and Cochrane had never played a doubles match together. The Tigers defeated Virginia’s team 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.

Auburn Head Coach Eric Shore said, “They were the fifth alternates for the main draw. They weren’t even supposed to get in. But some teams dropped out, we got an opportunity and took advantage of it.”

Shore continued, “They haven’t played together at all. We put them together this fall…They’ve played in practice for two weeks, and now they went out and won the All-American.”

The win automatically qualified Mies and Cochrane for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships to be held next month at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Congratulations to these Tigers!  Keep it going guys.
