Auburn Women Face Third Straight Top 15 Team Today

By on January 10th, 2016 in Basketball 1 Comment »

It has been quite a week for Coach Terry Williams-Flournoy and the Auburn women’s basketball team. Today the team will play their third consecutive Top 15 team by taking on the Lady Volunteers of Tennessee.

In their opening SEC game last Sunday, the unranked Tigers stunned the No. 7 Kentucky Wildcats at home by coming away with a victory after being down by as much as 17 points. Brandy Montgomery led the team in the final three quarters to take the win, 66-61. It was the first win against a Top 10 opponent since 2010.

Then on Thursday night, the Tigers tried to keep an emotional dropoff from happening when they played the No. 6 Lady Bulldogs of Mississippi State on the road. They were not so fortunate as the scoring went cold and turnovers were abundant. Auburn lost that SEC contest 45-60.

Now, they face yet another top tier team in the No. 11 Tennessee Lady Vols

(Who makes us these brutal schedules by the way?).

Auburn (11 – 4, 1 – 1) looks to beat the Lady Vols (10 – 4, 1 – 1) for the first time since the SEC tourney back in 2009, an eight-year drought that the Tigers would like to see come to a halt today. Last week’s SEC player of the week, senior Tra’Cee Tanner, has been leading the way lately scoring double digits in the last eight games.

The  Volunteers will be trying to rebound from a home loss against Florida. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT, airing on ESPNU and the Auburn radio network with Andy Burcham.

Tra’Cee Tanner had her sixth double-double of the season, but Auburn still lost to No.12 Tennessee 79-52.
