Auburn Hires the Right Man as Tigers’ New Basketball Coach

By on March 18th, 2014 in Basketball, News 26 Comments »

Auburn announced the hiring of Bruce Pearl this morning as the Tigers’ new basketball coach. Auburn AD, Jay Jacobs said, “From the moment I met Coach Pearl and heard his vision for our basketball program, it was clear he’s the right man at the right time for Auburn.”

One things for sure, Jacobs has brought a proven winner to The Plains. A three time National Coach of the Year and a two-time SEC Coach of the Year, he is the second fastest coach to amass 300 career wins in NCAA history.

“I’m humbled and blessed to be back in the game that I love,” Pearl said. “I don’t know how long it will take, but it’s time to rebuild the Auburn basketball program, and bring it to a level of excellence so many of the other teams on campus enjoy.”

Currently an ESPN analysts, he  took six teams to the SEC Tournament while coaching at Tennessee from 2005 – 2011. We are looking forward to seeing Coach Pearl bring his winning ways to The Plains. Basketball just got fun again.

Welcome Coach Pearl and War Eagle!

I might be a little excited about this. Just a little.

  4. restless6 says:

    I was rooting for Pearl!

  5. sparkey sparkey says:

This is the best move Jay Jacobs could’ve done. Bruce Pearl will have a winning season his first time at it. He’ll go to the NCAA tournament by year three if it takes that long but I predict year two. The Auburn basketball program just changed with this hire! TOTM I’m with you. I’m looking into season tickets now folks. If my broke butt is doing that, Auburn basketball has some energy it hasn’t had that I can remember. This is exciting stuff yes Auburn is not taking a seat behind anyone!

This is the first time I’ve ever actually enjoyed reading the comments on A lot of Bammers are on there admitting that they are scared by this hire. And I’m actually excited about Auburn basketball! What in the world?!?! I’ve gone from thinking that as much as I loved JJ he was out of his league and needed to go to thinking he’s one of the best ADs ever in 12 months. I need to calm down a bit. Time will tell, but wow.

      Hell yes!!!!

The meltdown on Finebaum was epic too!

Even CM Newton felt the wrath of butt hurt Bams. Black Tuesday for the Updykes!!!!

I live in Tennessee. And let me tell you, vols fans wanted him back bad. This is an awesome hire. I am so excited.

  8. Acid Reign Acid Reign says:

…..If nothing else, it’s great to have a coach who seems to actually want to be at Auburn. I never got that with Tony Barbee. Should be interesting to see how Pearl recruits at Auburn. Folks say it can’t be done unless you’re in bed with Nike…

  9. Todd92 Todd92 says:

Home run hire. For as much bumbling of the job that JJ has done as AD I have to admit that the last year has been a complete opposite. Awesome flippin hire!

Hey Todd, Good to hear from you. You’ve been missed around here.

      • Todd92 Todd92 says:

Thanks Greg, I’ve had a full plate since the first of December. My bammer brother had a second stroke that has left him severely disabled… Just got him out of rehab and into assisted living in the past couple weeks. I’ve missed being here.

        • Todd92 Todd92 says:

Oops sorry Paul didn’t mean to call you Greg….

        • Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

Dude, that’s rough. Thoughts to you and your family!

          • Todd92 Todd92 says:

Thanks TOTM he’s only 53, and other than my uncle who is also disabled from a stroke suffered 3 years ago, I’m the only family he has. Hard to see him like this but he refused to change his lifestyle after the first one.

          • Acid Reign Acid Reign says:

…..My sympathies, as well, Todd. I’ve yet to experience the “sibling in a bad fix” situation, yet. Have had grandparents and parent in that situation, though. All you can do is take it one day at a time, and keep your head up. Probably the scariest aspect personally is that I’m 53 years old, myself. And still hopefully balancing fun and health…

          • Todd92 Todd92 says:

Thanks Acid… It’s a stark reminder that we don’t just stay healthy for ourselves but also for those we love.

I remember back during his run at Tennessee, thinking, “who is this guy and how is he having this level of success?”

  11. Tigerstripe Tigerstripe says:

No! No! No! This man lied to the NCAA; this is a huge mistake…I’m just kidding, great hire! All on board with this one. Players are going to love him, students will idolize him…However, I do hope he keeps his shirt on…

  12. wde1988 wde1988 says:

Outstanding. Haven’t seen a coach generate this much buzz in a long time.

    Now just produce!

  13. Jeff Holland Jeff Holland says:

Huge, huge hire! The Gus Bus and Pearl Jam will be a great tandem and I can’t wait to see how the two programs feed off one another…a definite advantage.
