Auburn Extends Winning Streak

By on January 10th, 2018 in Basketball 4 Comments »

Auburn overcame a 45–35 halftime deficit to remain unbeaten in the SEC and extend its winning streak to 13 games with an 85–70 victory over Ole Miss. The win also snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Rebels that dates back to the 2011–2012 season.

With a top-25 ranking, the target is now on Auburn’s back. Even with adversity early in the game, the Tigers found a way to fight back against any and all obstacles—just as they’ve been doing all season long.

9,121 were in attendance, which included 3,400-plus students—an Auburn Arena record.

“I don’t think there’s any question that the crowd made an enormous difference,” Coach Bruce Pearl said.

The buzz surrounding the program is at a peak, and the team has yet to disappoint its fans.

Auburn has a very encouraging road ahead of with no ranked opponents in the next few weeks of action, but no team should be taken lightly in the SEC this season.

Now is the chance, early in conference play, for the Tigers to separate themselves from the rest of the pack and build their résumé for potential postseason play.

Before the Ole Miss game, Auburn’s chances of making the NCAA Tournament were a staggering 97 percent, according to ESPN’s College Basketball Power Index. The win on Tuesday night surely increased the Tigers’ chances even further.

Auburn takes on Mississippi State in Starkville on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 CT on the SEC Network.

I watched the game on tv. I tuned in just before halftime and we were down about 7 points. It didn’t look good.

But ever so gradually, the team started making shots and Ole Miss started to unravel. Sometime around the middle of the second half our guys got a point ahead, and the crowd went nuts. Ole Miss started falling apart while our guys stayed focused and made shots. The game momentum shifted completely from the first half and now Auburn was dominating. It was a testimony to team spirit, morale, and never-say-die attitude.

AU was stone cold from 3 point land in the first half and just keep heaving them up there. They only hit 6 the whole game (6 of 22). We were getting rebounds and causing turnovers, but were coming away with no points on far too many possessions early. Last year’s Tigers would have folded right there because they lived and died with shooting, but this year’s team started moving the ball and working it down low. Great adjustment that we have not seen in the past. Outscored them 50-25 in the second and made it look easy.

It’s great to be an Auburn Tiger! This team is really playing with consistent focus, effort and unselfishness. This is what Auburn basketball can be, should be, and now is.

Thanks for another great up Cole. You do a great job of keeping us informed and your pieces are always fun to read.
