Auburn Coaching Update

By on December 4th, 2012 in Football 18 Comments »

Rumors are flying like crazy today as Auburn’s coaching search comes to its conclusion. Speaking to reporters this afternoon, Auburn president Jay Gogue said an announcement would come in the next 24 hours, possibly even today.

At the start of the day, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was the hot name, with some sources saying the deal was done. Now, he’s been replaced with Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn.

Auburn Undercover is reporting that Malzahn in the clear front runner. Quoting from his story a few minutes ago, Phillip Marshall s, “It looks like Gus,” a source close to the process said. “Unless they (search committee) are talking to someone else, that’s the way it’s headed. He was much better in the interview.”

Meanwhile, conflicting reports are emerging about Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy and Arkansas. Reports earlier today said Gundy had accepted the Razorback job. A short time later, those close to Gundy said no such deal had been reached. In the last few minutes, Pat Forde at Yahoo Sports is reporting that Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema will be named Razorback coach today, with an announcement set for tomorrow.

Take this information for what it’s worth. New names are popping up by the minute. We’ll keep you posted.

Please don’t do this Auburn…our core problems will remain.

    Kirby Kirby Kirby Kirby Kirby

  3. TexasAUTiger TexasAUTiger says:

Cool, we’re getting Gus, now all we have to do is recruit a Cam/Manziel type player and hope they don’t get injured! Oh, and so much for that defense we thought we were getting back.

  4. ATL_AU_FAN ATL_AU_FAN says:

Gus much better in the interview? Well, shouldn’t he be? He spent three years at AU so I would hope he knows “what to say; how to say it; and say what they want to hear”…

  5. mokey says:

Arkansas justbhired the Wisconsin coach…this day is going south fast !

  6. mokey says:

It’s popping everywhere now that Gus is our guy…how frickin’ pathetic !!!

  7. Pine Mt Tiger Pine Mt Tiger says:

Like most, I wanted a big name coach. But most of them don’t want to leave their present gig. So if it’s Gus, Auburn will be ok. He is a great offensive coach and scoring points at Auburn hasn’t been done much since he left ie.38-0 & 49-0.
But it still could be someone else, just have to wait and see.

  8. ATL_AU_FAN ATL_AU_FAN says:

Everyone now reporting that Gus is new HC

  9. james4au says:

I was hoping for big name also. If it is Gus, I will support him, just as I will for whoever they hire.

  10. TigerintheHass TigerintheHass says:

GUS!!!! If it’s true we are in good shape, Tiger fans! All we need is a kicka** DC and we are back in business.

  11. sullivan013 sullivan013 says:

It all depends on who he snags for a defensive coordinator. I don’t have a problem with Gus on the offensive side. If I were a young gun wanting to play on a spread team that will put up big numbers like Tx A&M, Gus would be the one I’d sign with. Same goes for any recruit on the offensive side of the ball. We won’t hurt for linemen, WRs or RBs wanting to play at AU.

But the key is who he gets to run the defense. Auburn needs to build a tougher defense and get some solid recruits who will be able to improve our paper thin LB corps.

Welcome Gus. Glad to have you back. Would love to see grass stains on Saban’s headset and Spurrier’s visor again.

    • sullivan013 sullivan013 says:

Wait a minute,…. Just thought of something.

Another reason to like Gus as a hire – he knows most of players on the offensive side of the ball already – he recruited them specifically for Auburn. Not a bad thing for a new coach to have as an edge over someone coming to us blind and unknown.

  12. james4au says: is reporting Gus is the new coach.

  13. Randyc37 Randyc37 says:

At least, Auburn will not have to deal with the bad pub for hiring Bobby Petrino. I am sure that Finebaum will be unhappy.

    • mikeautiger says:

Finebaum is being an a*****e on the radio trying to make something of everyone else not being picked to coach. We just need to get a defense.

  14. wde1988 wde1988 says:

The definition of insanity is doing the same exact thing and expecting different results….

I don’t see this hire being a true change. I see this as a “business as usual” move.

    The good news:

Jay Gouge just sealed his fate.

Jay Jacobs should be fired for cause today.

Did we truly look at anyone?

It’s amazing. My alma mater has a re-occuring issue of not being able to sustain a football program that is blessed in resources.

Welcome Coach Gus. I sorta feel like we are at an airport… and we have played this song before.

I got to take my hat off to Arkansas and Kentucky… they just dusted AU in the ability for rational thought and their hires.
