Auburn defeated Tennessee Tech 5–3 Saturday to advance to the Tallahassee NCAA Regional Championship round. The Tigers got the job done with great fielding and timely hitting behind the superb pitching of ace Casey Mize (8–2).

The sophomore was effective, if not perfect, in pitching a complete game. He gave up two homers and a double, but he also sat down 12 batters in an otherwise dominating performance. Mize’s 12 K’s upped his strikeout total to 109 for the season. It marked the first time in 17 years that an Auburn pitcher has achieved the 100 milestone.

“For Casey Mize to throw a complete game under 100 pitches in a [postseason] college baseball game is amazing,” said Tiger skipper Butch Thompson.

Almost as amazing was the help he received from his defense. The Tigers committed no errors for the second consecutive game while making some fantastic defensive plays.

The Golden Eagles led 2–1 early on, but Auburn took a 4–2 lead off Sam Gillikin’s RBI double and Luke Jarvis’ two-run single in the fourth. Jay Estes capped Auburn’s scoring with a solo shot in the eighth.

The win propels Auburn (37–24) into the championship round on Sunday. Tennessee Tech will play Florida State (whom they defeated Friday 3–1) in an elimination game tomorrow at noon CT. The winner will face Auburn for the Regional championship at 6:00 p.m.

The Tigers only need one win on Sunday or (if necessary) Monday to advance to the Super Regional.

That was some good baseball I watched last night against TT. Offense was solid and defense was stout. Several WOW plays from the infield.

Still not sure how deep we can expect this team to realistically go, but with Mize or Thompson on the mound I think we can at least hang with anyone in the country. It's after those two are used where it gets very very dicey.
