A Clash of Tigers! (Auburn vs. Clemson Open Thread)
It will be a hostile environment
Auburn vs. Clemson Open Thread
War Eagle, everybody! This evening marks Auburn’s first road game of the 2017 college football season! Tonight, the Auburn Tigers will take on the defending National Champion Clemson Tigers in Clemson, South Carolina. This game will kick off at 6:00 PM Central Time on ESPN.
A year ago, Auburn trailed Clemson for much of the game before rallying in the 4th quarter. Time expired as Auburn was hurling last-ditch passes at the Clemson end zone. Auburn lost 19–13 to the visiting Tigers. Clemson went on to run the table and win the ACC Championship. The folks from South Carolina went on to the college football playoffs and met Alabama in Tampa for the national title. Clemson scored the winning touchdown with just a few seconds left on the clock, defeating the hated Alabama Crimson Tide 35–31.
Weather should be just about perfect for this game. Dry air is in place over the area, and skies should be mostly clear. Kickoff temperature will be in the mid 70’s.
As always, feel free to join in and enjoy this thread. I’ll be here this evening with a play by play and some fired-up commentary. This is what it’s all about, folks! A big nonconference game between Power Five teams. War Eagle, and beat Clemson!
Only thing I’m sure of is Gus needs to be fired. I’ve been saying it for 3 years. He’s a 1 trick pony and that trick is gone.
I was with you Tiger on the coaching continuity, but I can’t take watching Gus doing the same things that don’t work over and over. He’s seemingly unable to make adjustments, either he’s stubborn or just not smart enough to go to plan B if there is one. Would love to see what Dan Mullen would do with this kind of talent.
Guys, I’m starting to think you’re right (about Coach Malzahn).
I’ve been adamant about wanting to keep continuity on the coaching staff, especially having seen the revolving-door fiasco at Auburn since 2010.
But watching Gus’ body language during this game, he looked visibly defeated. That’s not how a leader should act. Stand tall and keep your chin up, even if you don’t feel like it.
Third Gen hit the nail on the head. Only way Gus wins a big game is with a miracle and he used all those up in 2013. All of our problems are coaching related. Gus is the least bright guy in America making $6 Mil.
Our main problem is our weakness at the head coaching position. A strong head coach has these type problems solved during the spring. We don’t have strong head coach.
the frustrating thing is on paper, this is probably one of the best OLs in auburn history.
…..I understand when an Auburn lineman is just flat-out beaten. That’s both a recruiting, and coaching problem, probably both! If a blue-chip guy is left standing out of position and the QB is getting flattened, that’s a coaching failure. I can accept if an Auburn lineman is beaten. He should have hit the weight room more! He should have paid better attention in practice! Only… why was this guy moved up, with no experience, and why were the experienced Auburn guys moved? We have nothing, from the coaching staff, on this. Maybe they don’t really know…
Thanks, Acid, for the perspective and commentary. The biggest pre-game question I had was how our O line would do, because I thought that dictate how the game went. Now that question has been answered, and it wasn’t pretty. They’ve probably got “Honk if you sacked Stidham!” Bumper stickers printed already.
well, seems like the decision to start prince tega was the killer. to start him, darius james had to move to RT, and then braden smith had to move back to RG. the entire year, it was assumed it would be james at LT, smith at RT, horton at LG, and that big fat FSU grad transfer at RG. that line seemed to be beautifully set up, and there wasnt any reason to mess with it. but nooooo…
…..In Tega’s defense, the end on that side never hit Stidham. What we’ve done in the middle and on the right had been to just round-robin guys in there, and not build any chemistry. It was stupid, and I’ve been griping since spring. I’m going to gripe farther. If you get out of A-Day with no clear starting O-line, you’re in trouble. The head coach can offer platitudes, but you’re in trouble if you don’t have a starting line out of spring. In Auburn, the left side clearly doesn’t know what the right side is doing. We have Mercer and Mizzou to get ready for a really vicious SEC defensive wave, to get ready, from this point.
Maybe you’re right. Who knows?
maybe prince tega is another one of those players that the coaching staff gets all emotionally attached to, and they play him when he isnt good enough yet. and the staff keeps on playing him not because he is good, but because he should be good and because everyone wants him to be good.
……Back to Auburn in the here and now, Auburn should have won this, but the coaches just blew this one. Such bad play, on the offensive line. So many hits on the quarterback, that would not have happened if various Auburn linemen didn’t whiff on the line of scrimmage. Auburn will lose a 14-6 decision, that would not have happened, if coaching was not so terribly bad on the offensive line. I hate to see it. Tigers lose, 14-6 against the defending national champions.
hey, mercer should have beat UGA last year.
….Darius James solidified the left side of the line, last year. Why in the (double toothpicks) would you move him, to the right, to start a guy at left tackle, that has played football for just a couple of years? And then move your right guard, who was an all-league player last year at guard, to tackle? And at the very last minute, bring him back to guard? We have a ton of skill all over this Auburn team, but the O-line has been horribly mismanaged. We can hope for improvement against Mercer and Mizzou, who looks terrible on D.
Wonder how many sacks Auburn will give up against Mercer?
Thanks for the perspective, Acid. I believe ya. Sad.
That’s going to just about be a wrap.
C’mon team, don’t allow Clemson to tie their school-record 12 sacks.
….Frankly, we’d have to dig back into the 1940s, to find worse offensive line coaching. Herb Hand is garbage, in the big leagues. His guys have no clue what to do. We’re in the second game of the season, and Auburn backs are getting pounded, with Auburn linemen standing up with no one to block. This is crazy stuff. Holy cow. They have moved, and moved, and moved starters, and even our all league players now don’t know what’s going to happen, on either side.
yeah, i was kind of wary about moving darius james from LT. he was doing great there, so why fix something that isnt broken?
Not disagreeing with you, Acid…but how can Smith, James, and Golson suddenly regress in their senior seasons?
I had hopes for a good O line this year, and we may eventually get that, but we’re nowhere close to it today.
…..There is no chemistry on the O-line. I figured we might be weak at the tackle spots, but we are failing also inside. Bye-bye, any All-American awards on any interior lineman, too. And the biggest failure is on the coaches. They havn’t given their charges ANY tools, to deal with stunts and stems.
At least learn to throw it away
On the occasions where he gets a few seconds of protection, it looks like no one is open.
11 sacks for Clemson, 3 consecutive sacks.
Stidham keeps running towards #7
Sure seems like they know the snap count
…..Whew. Third and very long. 3rd and 20. Two backs, and sacked again. Stidham has been sacked as many times as Brody was. Whew. Bad, bad offensive line play, and worse play design.
Stay away from #7
….Trips left. Motion. Blitz, and can’t hold it like that. Sacked.
…..at the Clemson 45. Pumped, has time, and will be swatted down for a loss. Can’t hold it, that long.
Dropping back too far
…..Stidham flushed, runs up the middle, has a first!
….Under center, Stove on the speed sweep, across midfield.
So in all fairness to Stidham, you guys are more concerned about our O-line + playcalling.
….Can Auburn actually execute here? You’d have to expect that Clemson’s D would be a little tired, after getting dominated in time of possession in the first half. The real question is whether the Auburn offensive guys can execute. Can good plays be called? Our line has again be bad, this game, and not really can we blame it on the new guys. We’ve gotten beat badly in the middle, too.
stidham is fine. he is playing in the worst possible situation, and it doesnt appear that he has gotten the least bit flustered or frustrated. he isnt trying to force things and his mistakes have been pretty few, all things considered.
…..Roberts fields it, Roberts, will break out to the Auburn 44!
….and surprisingly, 3rd and 8 Clemson. Underthrew a hitch, and an Auburn drop on a hitch. 6:16 left, and Clemson will liner it…
I just hate to see a good defense wasted.
But by the way, we officially have a defense that should keep us in any game this year. Even with a sputtering offense.
….It is not really Stidham. He’s basically protected the ball. Our line has been moved around so many times in the past year, that they have no idea who to block. And our receivers can’t really release on the line. They run in, when they should run out. They they can’t come back from the ball. They drop things.
I blame very little of this on Stidham. This looks like Brody Croyle behind the, “Honk if you sacked Brody” line.
I blame very little of this on Stidham. This looks like Brody Croyle behind the, “Honk if you sacked Brody” line.
Stidham has a long way to go to become a good QB.
…..Jeez. In comes Shannon, punts, bounces, downed at the Clemson 37. Only 7:31 remains in this one, and Clemson still leads, 14-6.
….2nd and 10. Blitz coming. Stidham takes, rolls, slings it off his back foot, incomplete out of bounds.
…..2nd and 7. Here is a diamond set, Stidham flushed, and manages to throw it away. Poor protection.
Haha yeah. That’s true.
…..Two backs. Give Pettway, cuts… at the 30.
oh, i dont know… i haven’t seen a backwards pass yet.
…..3rd and 2 at the 22. Huge play. Rolls, to Ryan Davis, will HAVE it, to the 27!
…..2nd and 9 Auburn. Three wide. Fake, slant to Kyle Davis, to the 22.
But it’s nice to have Jeremy Johnson back at QB, isn’t it?
….Pettway gets only a yard, on first down.
i guess we miss kerryon in this game a lot more than we thought we would.
…..Auburn trails, 14-6.
…..Punting team in, and here’s Spiers, fair caught by Stephen Roberts at the 14.
…..Clemson will take a delay of game flag, and will be pushed back to the 38, on 4th down. Spiers out to punt.
…..3rd and 10, Clemson. Four wides. Kelly flushed, and dumped near the line! Carlton davis!
,,,, 2nd and 20 Clemson, at the Auburn 44. Draw, and Feaster gets nine.
….Thrown away, and no flag? Finally, a flag. Intentional grounding. Meanwhile, Deshaun Davis is down, favoring a knee. And we go to endless commercials.
….New set of Clemson downs. Bryant with one back. Keeper, and has another dozen. Auburn look helpless and gassed, at this point.
….3rd and 4 Clemson. Bryant will fake, rolls right, and easily gets to the AUubrn 46.
….2 and 13. Bryant rolls, and will be finally be tripped up at the 46.
…..Time is running down. Clemson on the move, and will toss, Choice is rippped down!
i cant help but think he held onto the ball because of the intentional grounding earlier in the game. can’t throw the ball away without a flag.
Stidham cant think fast enough to find an open receiver
….Shannon bombs one, and McCloud is downed at the 41. 48 yards!
….3rd and 7. Possession play. Stidham, blitz coming. Will get sacked out of bounds at the seven. Bad play there, by the quarterback. Throw it away there, please?
…..Tigers have 2nd and 9. Dump to Hastings, tracked down quickly, not much.
….Auburn goes, backed up deep with few offensive options, it seems.
…..I have to agree on line opinions. We worried, back in March. Game one, guys could not adjust. Now, facing a national championship line, just whipped. It would help if we had trained at specific positions. But, no, We had to trade folks around and not focus on communication.
… or at least something to flip the field position.
Need a real drive here.
…..Here come AUburn, at the 12. Two backs. Pettway up the gut, maybe a yard.
D is gonna be the reason we win this.
well, auburn looks terrible, but they keep hanging around, and hanging around…..
….Roberts fair-catches at the 12.
Not impressed with Stidham or Lindsey at all
….22 seconds remain in the 3rd quarter. Spiers in to punt.
….Third and short. four wides. Bryant will take, and will gun it past Rogers, nice coverage!
Of course, this is not an average D line either…
…..2nd and 8. Bryant rolls, Rodgers gets 6.
I think the waiting aND messing with all the different configurations of this OL during Fall camp was a huge mistake. Should have settled one one lineup early and let them gel.
…..With 1:38 left in the third, Feast up the gut, got three.
OL has to step up.
…..Ian Shannon, will kick short, fair caught after just a 29 yard punt.
Can’t protect QB
….3rd down. Will dodge two tackles, gets back to the line, and down. Poor, poor protection.
….Twins each side. Going deep to Stove, bad read. Double covered.
New OC same Gus
…..Tigers on offense at the 20. Here is a quick hitch to Ryan Davis, to the 26.
i can’t blame stidham here. SW wouldnt be any better today.
….No chance, unless the line blocks. Stidham isn’t paralyzed. And the receivers actually catch a few. All three have to work at this point, AND the D has to keep fighting.
okay…. 1st quarter, auburn had a chance to do great things and failed. now they regret it. but 3rd quarter, clemson could have really put it away and they failed. even steven in that respect. let’s see if auburn can take advantage of this opening.
….With 3:01 left in the third, Auburn hangs in , down 14-6. And Clemson boots it out of play, touchback.
…..3rd and 21, back at the 49.Bryant will fire on the slant, knocked away by Dinson!
….Holding on Clemson!
….3rd and 10, again 3 DE’s for Auburn. 4 wide. Flushed, flag, to the Auburn 31, what’s the call?
…..2nd and 12. Tunnel screen, fell down at the line. Lucky play for Auburn….
…..New set of Clemson downs. four wides, keepr, and lost a yard in the middle. Good play by Derrick Brown in the middle.
I’ve been thinking for the last few weeks: we’d know what we have after this game. Cam struggled for his first few games…but good grief.
…..2nd and 6. four wide. slant, and caught, first down.
Agree / pitiful protection
…..Clemson has it, with a chance to put out the lights. Bryant keeps, and gets four.
in stidham’s defense, he isnt getting any chance at all in the second half.
Another sack – oy
That was pitiful!
…4th and three, and sacked. Awful. Awful play calling.
…..Here we go. Auburn has a possesion play, with 3rd and 10. And a complete mess of a play, with no chance to get the first. Ick.
Nowhere near first down
when the offense is really good, it doesnt matter if it is figured out or not. everyone knows what is coming, and the defense still can’t stop it.
…..I’m figuring an out of bounds semi-fade by Auburn is coming, and then a punt, at this point. At best.
….Auburn got a 9 yard catch out of it, but no dice. Offensive staff has been figured out. The Clemson staff figured out the overloaded strategy, and time was called before the snap.
…..Trips right. Three man front. Call? Timeout before the play? Timeout Clemson.
…..Third and ten.
…..2nd and 10. Twins right. Rolls right, and has to throw it away.
…..3rd and one. To the 46 of Clemson. Pettway, crashes to the Clemson 44. Stidham throws it over everybody…
Do you think Stidam is going to get it together and be the QB Auburn needs?
…..I think that is on Clemson, yesss!
…..3rd and 6. four wides. blitz comeing, changing the play, flag….
…..2nd and 10. Pressure on Stidham. Will throw on a really short hitch. Maybe 4.
Defense deserves better.
….At the Auburn 44. Stidam fakes, and misses Jalen Harris. Bad pass.
….New set of downs, they give raked out! Marlon Davidson, ball out, Fuller loses it, and Auburn has it!
well? both players pushed off at the same time, but it goes clemson’s way.
….Carlton Davis, Mr. interference!
….3rd and 5 Clemson. Can Auburn resist? Offset look. Incomplete, but a flag on Auburn.
…..2nd and 10 Clemson, and a 5 yard curl.
…..We are BAD, on most pass-blocking points on the line. Wow. We can’t block anybody, right now. No picking on any starter. They are all bad.
…..Ian Shannon in to punt. Low snap, low punt to McCloud, is up to midfield.
The line looks lost.
….3rd and 14, flushed, and sacked again. Offensive line looks pretty bad.
…..Beat, on the left side.
It’s looking like it is going to be a very long 2nd half.
…..2nd and 6 Auburn. Trips into the boundary. And a sack, fumbled….
…..New set of downs at the 30. Pettway, got only 4.
2nd and 1, Pettway, will get the first. Barely.
…..Stidham brings them out. Two backs. Rolls left, fires to Ryan Davis, near the first.
….So, Here comes the kick. Short, Igbanoghne will take it, no blocking. Auburn players looking scared to hit anyone. To the 21.
let’s see if auburn can answer.
…..We saw Auburn hitting these defending national champs in the mouth, and holding their own, early one. Now, Auburn is offering little resistance, and little offensive imagination. Where are these new RP options? Where is the blocking? Where is the new offensive gameplan?
it sort of is worth mentioning… when auburn got the fumble at the 11, the first thing i thought was, championship teams would get a touchdown in this situation….
…..Clemson, for the PAT. Heigle, god. Clemson take at 14-6 lead, early in the third quarter. Auburn looks inept in most phases of the game, at this point.
….In comes new personnel. shotgun, and Bryant fakes, spins and he’s gone. Easy touchdown. bad, bad Auburn tackling.`
…..They jump, false start.
…..3rd and 5. Rolls right, and Renfroe has it, to the Auburn 20.
,,,,2nd and 10, QB draw, got about 5.
…..Same play, batted away!
….2nd and 10 Clemson. four wides. Bryant on the fade, caught, first down to the Auburn 35, Carlton Davis burned.
….Fulller on the dive, nothing doing!
…..Bryant on a quick slant, has the first down, easy to the 33
….Fuller on the sweep, got seven easy.
…..Here’s Carlson with the second-half boot. It goes short, to the goal line. Returned to the 21, and down goes starting linebacker Tre Willams.
….Here we go, getting ready to start the second half. Auburn will have to kick off, trailing 7-6.
the last real offensive series at about the 4 min mark of 2ndQ, stidham did have some decent pass protection i saw. you know, that series where he had time to throw the bomb to stove that went incomplete on a non-call.
….Clemson is beating even veteran offensive linemen off the ball. Auburn cannot win, unless this changes.
….The issue is that Auburn doesn’t have a solid pass protection screen, and Clemson is basically running a five man defensive line. Various players flash in at the last moment, but it’s basically a 5 man rush. So, Clemson basically has enough players to run a 4 man press, with two deep safeties, and Auburn can’t keep the pressure out long enough to exploit some of those man coverage things.
hopefully this is a rope-a-dope kind of offensive plan. clemson has some of the best front line talent in football. but their defensive depth is awfully thin. leading up to the game, clemson fans were seriously concerned that their defensive line would get gassed at the end of the game.
i dont see any reason why they wouldnt open up the passing game. 16 of the first 20 plays were runs.
I am concerned with KP not getting some relief. It’s going to take some passing to make this work.
it’s pretty clear that auburn is still saving part of their playbook. there were a couple of series where they would hand it off to pettway almost every play, and i was think, are you sure malzahn isnt the one still calling the plays? it was ultra conservative play calling the first half.
Coaching adjustments? Not Gus’ style.
…..Will be interesting to see which coaching staff will have the better second half adjustments.
…..The real offensive Auburn issue is “hands.” We had 3 drops in the first half, on 11 throws. No one but Ryan Davis has more than 1 catch. Ryan Davis had 3 catches for 1 measly yard, on the dump off routes.
…..Kamryn Pettway has a pedestrian box score of 16 carries for 59 yards. Respectable, but Clemson is not going to let Pettway beat them.
stidham hasnt even found his groove yet, but you can tell that he’s not getting flustered and he’s in command, even though the pass completions havent been there yet.
….We can blame the refs all we want, but the real issue is with the Auburn Tiger offense. Looking at the box scores, the real issue is passing effficiency. You KNEW going in, that Clemson was going to sell out to stop Auburn, and make Auburn prove they could pass. Verdict? Auburn hit just 6 of 11 throws, for a measley 39 yards. Unless Stidham can actually throw the ball instead of holding it, and our open guys can actually catch it, the second half is going to be pretty bad.
….The “intentional grounding” call was the worst. He was outside the tackle box, and even outside the numbers. AND, the ball went past the line of scrimmage. Meanwhile, the horse-collar has apparently been de-emphasized.
seems like this is the kind of game where any call that is marginal, it’s going clemson’s way. they really tried to find an excuse to let clemson keep the fumble. late hit on stidham? no way. horse collar on the tackle of hastings? nope, nothing to see there. stidham throws the ball out of bounds? give that man an intentional grounding.
…..It is halftime, and Clemson leads Auburn, 7-6. Auburn has gotten more bad calls than good, from an SEC crew at Clemson. Who disciplines these guys?
….3rd and 2. 20 seconds. two backs. Give Pettway, Got the first down, but this buffoon group of SEC officials doesn’t even stop the clock. Boo on them.
….No call. Rolls right, will lose 4 on that scramble.
…..Not much time left. Trips right. Stidham takes, will scramble, and slides, and hit late?
…..Heigel to kick. This one is knuckled, Kam Martin, and dumped at the 21.
too many games where auburn dominated the first half, settled for field goals, and it cost them the game because field goals allow the opponent to stay in the game.
…..And Clemson will get the ball to start the second half.
…..Extra point coming. It’s up, and good. With 48 seconds left in the half, Clemson leads, 7-6.
….Auburn defense with their backs to the wall, 2nd and goal from the three. Bryant with two backs, three wides. Keeper, and Auburn can’t stop it. Touchdown.
…..Tough Auburn situation. They have dominated the first half, but have not executed in the red zone. Clemson has a chance to take the lead, on first and goal at the three, under a minute in the first half. Time for the Auburn defense to dig in, once again!
….Dabo calls time with 52 seconds left in the half.
…..First and goal. Bunch right, rolls right, Renfroe is to the three.
….3rd and 10. 3 ends in for Auburn. four wides. Will go deep, and McCloud has it, at the nine. Dean could not stop it.
….2nd and 10. Fake, will bounce one incomplete.
…Spread, flushed, will throw out of bounds, with 1:31 left in the half. The ball is at the Auburn 31.
hey, that was intentional grounding!
…..Trips left. Empty look fires on the slant, Renfroe has it. Bryant got hit, but new set of downs.
….3rd and 4, possession play. Bryant in the pistol. He will fire on the quick curl to Renfroe, coverage too soft. First down.
…..2nd and 2. Fake, keeper, will be DUMPED, by Roberts!
….New set of downs at the 40 for Clemson. Fake, pumps, rolls, and will get close to the stake.
…..Discussing? No foul. Still a first down.
…..3rd and 2. Fade, flag, and caught. Carlton Davis out of position.
…..2nd and 10 Clemson. Bryant will will fire on the hitch to McCloud, banged down, Javaris Davis.
…..First and ten Clemson. From their 12. Bryant will go with 4 wide. Throws, and batted away, Carlton Davis!
OL was giving good pass protection that last series.
…..We’ve got 4:01 left in the half, with Auburn leading, 6-0 in Clemson. The defense has been stellar, but all indications are that Clemson starting QB Bryant will be back in, even with a banged up left shoulder.
….Clemson is playing press-man coverage on the outside, but bailing to keep from giving up the deep ball. We won’t have time in the remainder of the first half, but in the second, some quick hitches and back-shoulder fades should be there.
…..43 yards, no return.
….Ian Shannon. From the Auburn 45, and McCloud will fair catch at the 13.
….I think they wanted the wheel route, but no chance.
…..Ouch. 3rd and 10. Kam Martin in. Fake, fires underneath to Martin, will fight to the 45, and well short.
….Four wides, fake, Stidham will nearly throw an interception.
…..Stove was hit before the ball got there, no call.
….New set of Auburn downs. Two backs. Fake, will go deep, batted away, over the top on Stove.
….Third and inches. Pettway, will bull for the first!
…..How does one actually get a horsecollar call?
…..2nd and 12. Stidham will have trips right. Fires over the middle to Hastings, and is close to the stake.
…..Tigers at their own 29. Will fire on a tunnel screen, and no. Ryan Davis cuts that down for a 2 yard loss.
….It’s a credit to Jamel Dean, with good recovery speed. That’s pretty good defensive coverage aggression, from my seat.
….There was a LOT of contact on the “boo” play. But, the Clemson receiver started it with a push. The defender came back in, with a bump, then was pushed again. If anything, offensive pass interference might have been called.
….With 6:47 left in the half, Auburn holds, and still leads, 6-0 over defending national champion Clemson. And Auburn will have the ball!
….Here’s the field goal attempt. And no. hooked left. Auburn takes over!
….Lots of boos. And maybe rightly. Tons of contact, on the previous play. SEC refs, no call.
…..3rd and 10, hitch, and not nearly enough.
Holland has become a monster!
…..2nd and 10 Clemson. To throw, fade, Dean, knocks it away! No flag, and a LOT of boos.
….Spread set, fake, and Cooper keeps, and is buried by Holland! No gain!
….1st and 10 at the Auburn 33.
…..Cooper comes in. 3rd and a long one, Choice on the give, and they push the line for the first.
….Should not be a foul. Hate that Bryant is hurt on that, but it’s just football. Russell got in there, but no dirty play involved. Bryant walks off. Glad for that.
Damn – this is as quiet as the stadium has been
…..Looks like Bryant’s left shoulder got crunched.
….Bryant got MASHED, when he threw, by Dontavius Russell, and Bryant is down and not moving. Ouch…
….2nd and 10, Screen Renfroe, got eight, but that was costly.
…..Holland messed that one up!
…..New set of downs. Trips left. Empty look, will be hit as he’s throwing, and incomplete!
…..3rd and 2. Bryant in the pistol set. Rolls right, throws to Renfroe, and he’ll have the first down at the AUburn 44.
…..2nd and 5. 3 wides. Bryant on the quick curl, to the Auburn 46,
…..Clemson has good field position. 4 wides. Bryant gives to Choice, and Auburn is blown back for 5.
….In comes Ian Shannon. McCloud deep. And is low, taken by McCloud, will slide left, to the Clemson 46.
…..3rd and 9. Stidham with 4 wide. Hastings in motion. Blitz, fill fire, well short of the stake, to Ryan Davis. Dumb decision.
Well. that didn’t work
…..2nd and 8. Two backs. Stidham will give to Pettway, lost yardage. Clemson sent 8.
…..Tigers first and ten, give Pettway, only two.
Damn, this is painful…
…..Stephen Roberts deep. Spiers, low punt, bouncing, NEARLY hit Roberts, downed at the 17 after the roll. Not good, by the return team.
…..Punt team in. Deshaun Davis Hunted the QB down.
…..Third and 1.5, essentially. Changing the play after motion. Fake, Bryant keeps, and NOOOOO!
…..2nd and 4. Give on the sweep to Choice, a yard short.
I hate settling for FGs… that always comes back to bite. Should be up 14.
…..Three wides Clemson. Pistol set, GIve, nice cut, and Choice gets six.
Geez – gotta stop with the field goals – nice to have the best kicker in the country but still…
….Carlson to kick off. This boot is with the breeze, and way back. Touchback.
…..Clemson only rushed 4, and Auburn caved in between Golson and Braden Smith. Not a good sign, up front. Those are the two most veteran guys on the line.
….With 14:17 left in the half, Auburn leads, 6-0.
….Carlson in. Will boot from 28, and it’s good!
….Braden Smith with a whiffed block.
….3rd and 5 Auburn. One back set. Stidham held it, and was sacked at the 13.
well, the game is every bit as hard-hitting as advertised. Pettway is especially impressive, though it’s not showing up in his stats yet. He’s a load to bring down. He’s taking serious hits by the best defensive tackles in the country, and he isnt going down.
…..Checking the Black Box Scoreboard, Mizzou leads South Carolina early, 3-0. TAMU leads Nicholls State only 14-0 at the half. LA Tech leads Mississippi State early, 3-0. LSU and Chattanooga are scoreless, early in the first. Notre Dame leads UGA early, 3-0.
…..Auburn has had the ball nearly the entire first quarter. And, they will be 3rd and 5 from the Clemson 6 yard line, when we return.
…..Clock winds down, and that’s the end of the first quarter. Auburn leads, 3-0.
…..2nd and 5. Package subbing in. Urg. Trips right. Pettway in motion, fake, Stidham will get maybe one on the scramble, no, nothing.
…..One receiver either side. Two backs, tight end. Stidham will take, give Pettway, to the six!
…..Auburn, first down in the red zone!
DINSON IS BACK!
…..Review: STANDS! Auburn’s ball!
….Ball is moving, as the knee hits. Tough call, for the replay officials, after several angles.
….The call on the field is “fumble.” Unless they can find evidence to overturn, that should be Auburn’s ball.
…..Yes, that ball is definitely out before a knee hit! Officials are reviewing, but this should be Auburn’s ball. Dinson recovered.
….At the Clemson 11!
yeah, speaking of officiating, BOTH times Davis got the interference call, i immediately flashed back to Sammie Coates at Mississippi State, 2014.
…..And AUBURN HAS IT!
…..Screen to the 11, fumble!~
…..Clemson takes over at their ten, with 1:21 left in the first quarter.
….Punt by Shannon, short, but bounces and rolls down to the ten. Whew.
….And they said “da_n” on national TV.
…..Well, 3rd and 22. Fade, and no flag, this time. That’s a HORRIBLE call from the SEC crew.
….Ha! Swearing by the official!
….Flag? Calling intentional grounding, when he was near the sideline!
…..2nd and 7. Twins to the boundary. Give Pettway, pitch to Stove, pitch to Stidham, has to throw it away. Didn’t work…
…..Two backs, Pettway, no, a fake, and Stidham will go out at the 43.
….3rd and 1, possession play. Half-huddle. Pettway, BULLLS over the unbalanced line, to the Clemson 46!
…..Twins right. Pettway, will FIGHT! to the 49!
Me gonna stop posting –I’m at the game but posting is lagging
…..At the Auburn 40, 2nd and 9+.
…..Up quick. at the 40. Two backs. Pettway, nothing doing.
….2nd and 6. Play clock running. Two backs. Stove in Motion, PEttway, will fire FORWARD, to the 45!
…..At the 27, 1st and 10 Auburn. Trips left. Motion in by Hastings. Stidham dodges a tackler, and goes across the 30.
Got the flag, i Think…
….Kyle Davis draws his second flag, and AUburn will have a new set of downs!
…..1st and 15, backed up to the 12. Stidham will spread ’em out. Will go deep, Davis is knoced down again! Flag!
…..Call? Illegal motion. Auburn backs up. Both backs in motion.
Let’s go DEFENSE!!
…..Empty set for Stidham? Cox and Pettway back in, sweep Stove, not much, and a flag.
Should be 7 but will take it
Hey all. I’d love to chat but I just got home from ball field and i am totally into this game
….If anyone knows how to disable the CAPSLOCK key in Win-8 or Win-10, I’m all ears.
…..Auburn ate over 7 minutes on offense, and Clemson got 5 plays. Auburn retains a 3-0 lead, and has the ball back.
….Whew! BIG pressurE. Short punt, will bounce down into the AUburn 17.
…..Coe and Holland on the party!
….One back, motion to the wide side. And HE”S GOIN’DOWN!
Maybe a yard
…..3rd and 8, possession play.
…..2nd and 10. Bryant in the gun. Two backs. To throw, will run, and he gets very little.
….New set of downs. 4 wides. Hitch, and over the head, good coverage on McCloud.
So, Clemp and Son gonna go with the pass instead of run…
…..2nd and short for Clemson. Bryant goes 5 wides, give on the speed sweep, at the 39.
…..Clemson at the 25. Three wides, fake, will roll right, and caught near the stake by Renfroe.
Did I make mention how LOUD this stadium is? If not, then allow me to state that this is LOUD… Good gosh. And, yes,Stidham had the play but three is better than none
….Carlson to kick it off. Against the breeze. Carlson will boot it, 5 yards deep! Touchback.
…..We still have half the first, and the entire second quarter left.
Gus is the only one that can beat us.
…..And Auburn had to burn ALL of their first half timeouts, for a piddley 3-0 lead.
…..I HATE these package substitutions…
….Man, they had a zone read called, on 3rd and goal, but to the H-Back. The WHOLE Clemson defense had the back. If Stidham keeps, he walks in. Then, they tried to run a whole new package in for 4th down. Took WAY too long.
…..With 7:13 left in the first, Auburn takes a 3-0 lead! War Eagle!
…..Here’s a chip shot attempt. From 24. Carlson is up, and good! Barely…
….Carlson will get his chance, now.
…..Auburn will go. Clock running out. And a delay of game? Ouch.
…..Bad read, there.
….Half huddle. Under center. Pitch to Cox, and he did not get in.
I’m watching the game, reading Acid’s play-by-play, and laughing at ATL’s comments on the noise. Haha. Sorry, man.
…..3rd and goal from the one.
…..Second and goal. Super jumbo left. Pettway, fights, gets inside the one.
….First and goal! Trips right. Here’s Davis in motion. Pettway, spinssss, to the two.
OMG yet again — this place is LOUD
….Yes, inside the 4!
…..Tigers going! Two backs. Stacked D line. Pettway stood UP, but falls fowards. Bad spot, again, but close.
….I think Coach Malzahn is complaining about the spot. It looked decent, to me. This is an SEC officiating crew, I think.
…..A little discombobulated, from a management standpoint.
…..From 22, here’s Carlson. Timeout, and a flag? Timeout Auburn, apparently.
…..4th and inches. Auburn sends in Carlson.
…..Just a half yard short!
….4 wides. Stidham, and here it comes. Scrambles, will run, NEAR THE STAKE!
…..3rd and 10 at the 14. Do NOT take a sack!
…..Twins to the boundary. Two backs. Stove in motion, give to Pettway, and nothing doing up the gut.
…..At the 14, new set of downs. Twins right. Fake, slant, and off the hands of Kyle Davis, nearly intercepted.
….Down to the 14!
…..Auburn on 2nd and 3. Pettway moving right. Pettway, BUSTING THROUCH!
Almost wish i watching this at home —
…..Auburn has a great opportunity, here. I’d call a counter, here. Everyone expects a bomb, in a 2nd and 3 situation.
…..2nd and 3. Stidham with motion out. And Auburn called time. 12:03 left in the first, still scoreless.
….Bad spot, only two.
…..That’s 5 yards. 1st and 5. Motion , give Pettway, 4.
…..Two backs. Under center, and flags. Too many men?
…..At the Clemson 37, new set of downs.
This place is SO LOUD – Hard to describe
….Back shoulder fade to K. Davis, and a new set of downs. He interfered, and down and hurt. Limping off.
…..3rd and 7, possession play. Spread out. Motion Davis. Fade, blatant interference, flag!
….At the Auburn 47. 2nd and 7. bunched in. Fake, fake, and just off the hands of Kyle Davis.
…..New set of downs. Two backs. Give to Pettway, bulls for two.
….3rd and long. Stidham will take, and two in to protect. Time. Fires, HIT, but held on! NC Myers!
Should have thrown that one away
…..2nd and 12. Three wide left. Screen, J. Davis loses two.
…..Held it too long.
…..Stidwill check. 4 wide. To throw, will run, and loses two.
…..Tigers will be first and ten at the 25..
…..Here’s the homestanding Tigers to kick off. Davis and Kam Martin deep for this one. Here’s the boot. Deep to the left, five yards deep, touchback.
Not sure what to type — this whole stadium is electrified.. Let;s see what we do on offense – gotta go silent now or risk the wrath of my wife.
…..OK, both armrests up. It’s time to play!
…..Ronnie Brown live-miked that coin toss. Pretty good stuff!
…..Clemson wins the toss, and defers. Auburn will have the ball first.
…..Stan White is the umpire?
…..I’m listening to the radio, and either it’s a closed booth, or they have some amazing filters. I can hear the crowd, but it’s not drowning anyone out.
But our band makes a statement! They sound good and they are LOUD, YAY!
…..Balloons loose, and we’re just a few minutes from kickoff.
…..And here comes Clemson!
I mean so loud that i cannot even talk to me wife sitting next to me
…..Auburn’s getting a few boos, coming in.
OMG – And now it is REALLY loud!!
…..And it’s time for the National Anthem.
Interesting – Pettway did not have that “sleeve” on during warm ups… Not sure what changed. I am thinking “decoy” – but who knows for sure. Pettway sure didn’t look hampered during the first pass…
…..Clemson players running down the hill, bouncing off Howard’s rock.
…..Two games still in progress. Tennessee leads Indiana State, 35-7 midway through the 4th. Vanderbilt leads Alabama A&M, 42-zip, also midway through the 4th.
…..Late afternoon scores, from the SEC. Two finals, Alabama 41, Fresno State 10. TCU 28, Arkansas 7.
…..I thought Stidham did pretty well, once the O-line solidified as the game went on. I’m hoping the line starts off at a high level, tonight!
Interesting, wasn’t it, when Stidham’s first game for AU wasn’t the second coming how the media now refers to him as a “good” QB. I think we’ll see him and Pettway go to town tonight!
…..Clemson band is on the field, marching.
….First live shot on ESPN, and Kamryn Pettway does have a full sleeve on one calf, further bringing up the injury question.
Clemp and Son are trying to make this a hostile environment – the fans are some of the best but, once inside the stadium, it is a different stage…
Wish this were in JHS – but the AU presence is being made. I have been here, I guess, three times now, but this is as loud as I’ve heard.
…..You’ve been a great presence, ATL!
I will try to comment when I can but don’t expect much – just sayin’
…..Good to hear! Make some noise, Auburn fans! Woooooooo!
…..We go over to ESPN.
Pettway looks fine in warm ups — And the Auburn contingency isn’t being quiet either. We are holding our own, so to speak
….Austin Allen is brutally sacked on 4th and 10, and it’s nearly over in Fayetteville. TCU will beat the Razorbacks, 28-7.
…..We are, ESPN willing, 15 minutes from kickoff!
…..Pettway, of course, starts at running back.
…..And in a bit of a surprise, Daniel Thomas will start at nickelback.
….According to Auburn’s twitter feed, Kyle Davis will start at receiver, along with Eli Stove and Darius Slayton.
….Any issues on Kamryn Pettway were not admitted by Malzahn in the pregame interview. He’s supposed to play, tonight, and play a lot.
Really LOUD – difficult to adequately express,,,
…..How loud is it, there?
Acid, you are correct in that Smith is not dressed out. Sorry, been out of touch for a ;little while. And coverage is spotty but looks like Arky is going down today.
….Again, the D looked totally gassed…
….Oh, my! It snowballs downhill. After an Arkansas turnover, TCU bashes in another TD. The Arkansas loss goes from bad to ugly…
…..Clemson is evidently having a little injury trouble, too. Starting safety Van Smith is not in uniform, for warmups, according to al.com. Could this mean a bigger game for slot receiver Will Hastings?
…..The Arkansas D looked WORN OUT, on that drive. Bret STILL hasn’t called a timeout. PAT is good, and TCU leads Arkansas 21-7. The SEC is about to go 0-1 against the Big-12. Thanks, Bret!
…..At the 14. Stretch play, bouncing off tacklers, TD TCU. Game over…
…..At the Arky 16, 2 and 7. A sweep, and another first down to the red zone, first down. Hogs are likely goin’ down.
….STILL no Arkansas timeout. Clock runs after a three yard pickup.
…..New set of downs for TCU, with 3:51 left.
…..TCU throws deep, and Arky runs into the receiver! Oh, no!
….Clock is running under 4 minutes, on 3rd and 12 for TCU.
…..TCU takes a sack. Time to use those timeouts, Bret?
…..It’s not looking good for the Razorbacks. They give up another first down to the Horned Frogs, with 6 minutes left in the ballgame, trailing 14-7. They do still have all three timeouts left.
….Most afternoon SEC games are settled. Alabama leads Fresno State, 34-10 late. Vanderbilt leads Alabama A&M 42-0 in the 3rd. Tennessee leads Indiana State 28-7 in the 3rd. Only game still in doubt is in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
…..Tigers take the field, in Clemson. Warmups are underway.
…..Latest news from Clemson, Kerryon Johnson is not dressed out, this afternoon. Not a big surprise, there.
….Lots of Derp in Fayetteville. Arkansas DOINKs a point-blank field goal attempt. TCU takes over with the lead, early in the 4th.
…..End of the third, and it’s still TCU 14, Arkansas 7. The Hogs have 3rd and goal at the Texas Christian 2 yard line.
….Arkansas now running the ball, and they are first and goal at the 3.
…..TCU is trying to blow a game. They drove inside the ten, and fumbled it away. Drove back into Arkansas territory, and dropped a TD pass, then a failed quick kick. And then they just let Austin Allen scramble on 3rd and 14 for a first down. They ought to be up, 28-7. It’s still 14-7, and Arkansas is driving.
….A couple of SEC halftime scores…
Vanderbilt 35, Alabama A&M 0.
Tennessee 28, Indiana State 0.
Alabama is sleep-walking, still leads Fresno 28-3 with about 5 minutes left in the third.
TCU still looks like the better team. I think Arky goes down
….Arkansas breathes a sigh of relief! TCU was driving to go ahead two touchdowns. A bad snap, and it rolled to the quarterback and bounced off his hands. Arkansas recovers at the six.
ATL, it is just 5 miles north of Huntsville on a small country road. Also fresh sliced stick boloney, souse meat (not for me), peppered ham. Just like the old days. There is no telling how much cheese that old man has sold
Sure gonna do what I can!!
…..Enjoy, ATL, and pull us through! War Eagle!
Alrighty – my posts, if even present, will be few and far between ( probably good news for TET members) but heading into the stadium.
…..One thing I’m missing from this year is that the official Auburn site used to have a liveblog before the game. I’m not finding it, this year. They have a twitter feed on the gameday, but it’s not the same.
…..If one is offended by drinking, college football is not their sport. It’s part of most tailgates, and quite a lot of it gets into the stadium, too. It is what it is. I’ll be having something, at gametime. I’ll probably stick to a glass or two of cheap Black Box pinot noir, but if it goes badly, a stinger might get into the mix.
Good gosh – where have I been? I didn’t even remember that Frank Broyles passed away.
So, if I were doing this it would be the “Tanqueray and Tonic” scoreboard — but that might also be offensive…
I don’t intentionally try to offend anyone but I’m to the point in my life where; never mind…
And Hurricane Irma hasn’t even made landfall in the US but parts of FL are already without power.
Let us all take a few seconds and pray for those who are affected and those who will be affected by this storm. College football – and AU especially – mean a lot to me but there are more important things going on this weekend.
MyAuburn — where is that store? I am perfectly willing to make a “day trip” over and back for that!
…..I usually stick whatever item I’m eating or drinking in there.
Oh, the scoreboard has changed from Veggie to “last-mug-of-coffee” —
…..Locally, the UAB Blazers have traveled to the Scheu in Muncie, Indiana. They trail Ball State 21-17, early in the 3rd quarter.
….In national games of interest…
Michigan 36, Cincinnati 14.
Louisville 47, North Carolina 35.
….In earlier action…
Ole Miss 45, UT Martin 23.
Kentucky 27, Eastern Kentucky 16.
…..Checking the Last-Mug-of-Coffee Scoreboard!
TCU 14, Arkansas 7, less than a minute left in the half.
Bama 28, Fresno 3, at the half.
Vandy 21, Alabama A&M 0, midway through the 2nd.
Tennessee 14, Indiana State 0, with about 10 minutes left in the half.
Store is run by an 81 yr old man and his wife, still going to work at 6 every day. Sells a whole wheel every week, it is always fresh and superb!!
…..Austin Allen gets clobbered, again, but a flag on a hit to the head. However, Arkansas gets caught for a pick play. Offsetting. And Austin Allen’s head is still ringing enough that they call a draw on 3rd and long.
Well, crap – apparently there are more people I “need” to meet — be back ASAP…
I fully understand but the “cabbage” is still a food item that I happen to like – I do get the WW reference but, still…
You forgot Havarti? How reckless of you. I thought you had higher standards, Sir.
…..I have my usual extra-sharp cheddar blocks, and a couple of wedges of fresh Parmesan. I forgot to get Havarti…
…..I had a family member way back when, who had an offensive term for every race and religion on Earth. Even his own. The one I used without thinking is a World-War (or earlier) reference for folks of Germanic ancestry. Again, that’s not how I meant it, but…
Oh man, I wish I could fine “hoop cheese” here.
HUH?? Why is that offensive? It is a bleeping food item…
And, if that TCU pass were on point that would have been a huge gain, if not a TD…
Chicken in a Biscuit crackers and some hoop cheese cut off a full wheel at a little country store I have found.
I love those local places!!
…..Apologies for the sauerkraut reference that is apparently offensive.
…..I love a good hot dog, myself. A slightly burned Nathan’s, some grilled onions, k***t, cheddar cheese, and some Sneaky sauce… I have all those fixings on hand. I’m tempted to bunch dinner and eat that, but I’ll resist!
…..I’ve got to pace myself. I was going to sleep in this morning, but was so excited about today that I was awake before 6:00 AM. I don’t want to be nodding off during the game!
My boston butts are all gone — Now eating Pringles – about to start some hot dogs. I’m a visitor and better prepared than these “homies”. Guess they don’t know how to properly tailgate.
And, yes, that was a HUGE hit. Just now seeing it. Ouch.
…..I’m not sure Allen knows where he is, right now.
…..Arkansas can’t block a 3-man TCU front. Allen got WHACKED! I’m surprised he got up…
…..I wanted sausage. I have an unopened pack of Publix asagio cheese–spinach ones. But if I ate that, then I wouldn’t be hungry for a 5:00 supper. I need to eat something substantial, before live-blogging the game!
BUT – if the veggie scoreboard ends up showing an AU win then I’m totally on board!! 🙂
Not sure I like the veggie scoreboard!! I’m too much of a carnivore for that… Except when I have my sliced cucumber and onion with simple white vinegar along with some salt and fresh ground black pepper.
I also think Gary does a good job – always seems he has done his research.
…..I’ll give Brad and Gary a shot. Some folks don’t like Danielson, but I think he does his homework and adds insight to the broadcast.
…..Checking the veggie scoreboard… Vanderbilt has jumped on Alabama A&M early, leading 14-0 late in the first. Alabama retains a 21-3 lead over Fresno State, in the second. TCU just bulled in untouched on Arkansas, and has taken a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter. And finally, Tennessee is up 14-0 on Indiana State late in the first.
I wasn’t a Verne fan, per se, but just does’t seem right with him gone. Brad, however, is probably the best they could have done, in my opinion.
…..Nessler is in mid-seaon form. CBS could not have done better, I don’t think.
…..Hopefully the Clemson fans overdrink and are placid by kickoff time.
Clemson campus really filling up now. This will be a LOUD crowd tonight…
Brad and Nancy (his wife) used to compete every year with us for Halloween costumes. Wife and I won every year sans one where we tied. Nessler is a great guy. Wife and I were at his 50th birthday party.
…..It’s certainly odd hearing Nessler and Danielson in the same booth…
…..I think I shall focus on scouting Arky, for now. Alabama is who we thought they were. They still aren’t perfect at the tackle spots in protection, but they should improve as the year goes on.
…..Arkansas has tied TCU at seven-all.
…..Looks like Bama will win by as much as they want to, which is what I expected. Up 21-3 on Fresno State, early in the 2nd.
…..I’m trying to stave off the tailgate cravings by slicing up a cucumber, a tomato and a couple of slices of extra sharp cheddar. Topped by Good Seasons Italian dressing. I’ll be hungry again in an hour, I suspect…
Back to the cooking – we have a locally owned German meat shop near us. They always have great products but can and will order anything. I have had them order prime beef and Berkshire pork and they always come through. At first they wanted a deposit – which is understandable – but now they just order it and call when it arrives.
To @MyAuburn, yes, it’s great when these smaller shops know your name. Few and far between these days.
Hey Hey — Look who is back!! Did my “meeting duties” and thankfully, that is over!! Tennessee off to one heck of a start against Indiana St. 7-0 with only 15 seconds off the clock. Geez.
Bammer with back to back defensive penalties to give Fresno first down. Nicky having a baby!!
Hurts ran one in and threw one to tight end. AU defense, take note of that!
Bammer already taking it to Fresno St. early 14-0
TCU up on Arky early 7-0 and looked good doing it.
…..Ole Miss will beat Tennessee Martin, too, leading 45-23 late. I’m going to get a few chores done. Will be back in an hour or so.
…..Third time’s a charm? The Wildcats will boot it thru, and they ice the game. Kentucky leads Western Kentucky, 27-16 with 23 seconds left.
…..Yes. From 34, it’s blown dead, this time. False start!
…..Icing field goal try by Kentucky, BLOCKED! But ruled offside. 27 seconds remain, and will Kentucky try again?
…..Kentucky will bash out a first down at the EKU 23, and that might do it. The Wildcats lead, 24-16 with under 3:30 left, and EKU is out of timeouts.
…..Georgia Tech’s lead also seems safe, at this point over Jacksonville State. 37-10, with about 9 minutes left in that one, in Atlanta.
…..Kentucky/Eastern Kentucky apparently is going to go down to the wire. The Wildcats retook the lead while I was away, and it’s now 24-16, midway through the 4th quarter.
…..Jacksonville State gets a field goal, to end the third. Georgia Tech 30, Jax State 10.
…..And then Tech provided the most vicious defense of a zone read, that I’ve ever seen. OUCH!
…..And changing channels, Jax State has promptly driven to the Jacket 5 yard line.
…..Techsters are lighting up Grant Field in Atlanta. They now lead Jax State 30-7. Turn out the lights, the party’s over…
…..I try to find cheap meat that I can enjoy. I live off chicken thighs and pork lions, 90 percent of the time. I’ve got lots of different ways to cook ’em.
…..Same story for Ole Miss, in week one and week two. Slow out of the gate, and pouring in on in the second half. Down double digits to UT Martin, Ole Miss now leads 38-16, late in the 3rd.
Hey, would rather pay up for guaranteed good meat. Cheap stuff you can’t eat is a waste of good $
…..We have a fresh seafood joint near us that is WAY better than the grocery store, but there’s a bit of sticker-shock, there.
They hang a whole one in cooler till it gets really dark!!!
Every now and then they will have aged rib eyes. You have to reserve weeks in advance as they go fast. Unbelievable!!!
…..Kentucky is trying to dig in on defense. EKU is moving, again, trailing 17-16.
They are few and far between nowadays
…..That sounds awesome! One of the disadvantages of living in the center of a metro area, is a lack of places like this.
Found a little Mom and Pop meat processing house in Henegar, Al. Anything pig is $2.50 lb including some killer sausage, country bacon, inch thick chops. Baby backs $1.50 lb.
Building looks like it should be condemned but the meat is the best I have had, and the prices are dirt cheap.
I go there so much they know me by name.
….No problem. I’ll be in and out till Auburn kicks off, too.
…..I figure EKU HAS to get tired, at some point. Kentucky actually does have decent mid-level SEC depth, now.
Oh, being told I have to go “meet” people so will be away for a bit. Spouses are SO demanding sometimes. As my shoulder is now bruised for typing this…
And just as I say that a UK WR double moves a defender out of his shoes.
…..I’m so bad, I can rarely bring myself to discard ribeye fat. I eat it all…
On steak, my preference is the ribeye while the wife prefers the filet. She doesn’t like the “fat” while I love it!
We will also buy an entire prime loin from Costco – much the same as Sam’s I guess – then I cut it and vacuum pack the individual steaks myself.
EKU needs tds to ice it, but I see little reason to place confidence in UK scoring.
…..Georgia Tech scores again, and now enjoys a comfortable 23-7 lead over Jacksonville State. They did blow a similar lead last Monday, against the Tennessee Vols…
…..Ole Miss is up comfortably on Tennessee Martin now, leading 31-16 in the 3rd.
….Yes, gag on the Big Blue. Watch out, EKU. You need touchdowns, not field goals! Eastern Kentucky leads, 16-10 over Kentucky, with 4:08 left in the 3rd quarter.
…..My philosophy on steak is that the boneless ribeye is the pinnacle. Yes, I like the better grades of it, but it’s a marginal quality increase for each price doubling. I love an 8-dollar Sam’s Club inch-thick. A $14 Publix ribeye is maybe 10 percent better. And a $25 dollar Whole Foods cut is maybe 20 pecent better. And then more than half the time I try to find decent chuck steaks…
UK is about to lose this game. Honestly EKU should be up double digits. UK looks like they borrowed Mizzou’s defense from last week. To think, they were a pretty popular dark horse SEC East pick… but really the only team on that side that has looked even semi impressive is USC.
…..If I order a steak at a restaurant, it’s really a vote of no-confidence in the rest of their menu items.
…..You’re not going to get real charcoal/wood taste at most restaurants. They are going to fry it on a grill in butter, or on a gas grill that’s used for other things as well. At best, they sous-vide it, and then add a sauce, which is a whole different deal, anyway.
We don’t do steak very often and, when we do, we cook them at home. Not to brag but we think our steaks at home are as good, if not better, than those in restaurants.
We do splurge on steaks by ordering prime from Lobel’s in New York or from Chicago Steak Company – and they are expensive – but certainly no more so than those in restaurants.
….EKU is driving again. My question, is Kentucky that bad? Or is EKU a lower-echelon powerhouse? Both?
…..I am being lazy today, food wise. I have enough leftovers to get by, and will cook tomorrow. Can’t beat BBQ pork, especially in these times when even a cheap steak is $5 a pound.
True dat – if you’re gonna be called then at least make it worth it.
…..If you’re gonna hold, at least prevent the receiver from catching it!
I smoked two Boston butts yesterday/last night and have those with me. They aren’t gonna last long. We are tailgating with a co-worker of my wife who is a Clemson grad. We did the same the last time we played in Clemson. They have a nice spread but the BBQ seems to be the star of this tailgate.
…..PAT is good. Georgia Tech leads Jax State, 17-7.
…..Jax State gets flagged for defensive holding, AND still gives up the catch, two broken tackles and the touchdown.
…..Georgia Tech has marched methodically down the field, in the opening minutes of the 3rd quarter. But Jax State comes up with the sack!
…..No one will bother with a piece of “mystery veggie” wrapped in foil, I’ve discovered…
….I have the last piece of BBQ pork shoulder from Labor Day squirreled away in the bottom of the vegetable drawer for later. Comfort food…
I have some Pringles with me – of course, ya gotta come to Clemson to get them.
…..Ole Miss is pulling away in Oxford, now leading Tennessee Martin 24-16.
we are turning towards comfort food during a day of extreme stress.
…..I am glad I did NOT buy chips or cookies this week at the grocery store. I am having a SERIOUS junk-food craving, today. I’ve already had buttered toast with fried bologna and a mess of fresh Parmesan cheese, this morning for breakfast!
…..EKU took the second half kickoff down to the KY 4, and fumbled it away.
….North Carolina lost Gene Chizik, and has trouble on defense.
I had not seen the Louisville score but was hoping for a North Carolina win. I pull against Petrino every chance I get –
…..In other news of note, Louisville is threatening to send North Carolina to 0-2 on the season. The Cardinals lead 20-14, early in the third.
…..And Meechigan leads 17-7, about 6 minutes left in the half. Running Tuberville off has not helped the Bearcats, it seems.
…..Kind of a strange day for early games. The most prominent game ABC could find to put on is Cincinnati at Michigan. I think all of the Florida cancellations have really put a dent into the early slate.
…..I usually keep ESPN’s scoreboard page running. What’s kind of funny is when I’m doing a thread when Auburn is on broadcast TV. I’ll switch to an antenna, and be WAY ahead of everyone watching on cable or satellite.
Also glad you are posting those scores – I’m trying to watch the GATech game on my phone but it really lags apparently – I just now saw that last play
…..Six seconds in the half, at your own 40 yard line, and you run a QB draw, with a timeout left? Boo on Jax State for that! It’s halftime, and Georgia Tech leads, 10-7.
Yeah, I have had some work years that were like that. Being quasi-retired does have some advantages. The wife still works and she couldn’t make the opening game against GSU.
…..Eastern Kentucky leads Kentucky 13-10 at the half.
…..I hope I can make it down. The only Saturday home game I’m for sure off work, is the Iron Bowl. I’m supposed to be off for Ole Miss and Monroe, but we will see. It’s been a tough year, work-wise.
I think we are the only ones in our subdivision with a generator so I could easily see that happening to us – neighbors coming down with coffee cups! And, like you, I will be more than happy to make those endless pots of coffee.
And, Acid, my generator routinely powers three crock pots, coffee pot, satellite TV, and fans. We set up six tents so a decent sized tailgate.
Also, any and all are welcome to join us – We are always on the corner of Village View and War Eagle Way – behind Auburn Arena.
…..Ole Miss has exploded back. They now lead Tennessee Martin 17-16 at the half.
…..Against the B’ham PD’s wishes, we made it over the mountain and back home. And the power was still on! Enjoyed an afternoon of sledding, and a national title that evening! War Eagle!
…..Ha! I remember that 2010-11 snow! In perhaps a foolish move, my wife and I spent a romantic “date night” at a bed and breakfast on Birmingham’s Southside, the Sunday night before. Never lost power, but there was a couple of inches of snow/ice on the ground, and I was looking at the prospect of watching the title game on a dinky 13 inch TV.
I’m anchored up on Shell Island off Panama City. I have decided we are not having a hurricane here.
I have the motor home with generator and satellite. When N. Al was without power after the big tornado outbreak, I cooked and charged phones for the whole neighborhood.
It was funny watching the trek of people coming down the sidewalk with coffee cups in hand. I made at least 10 pots of coffee every morning.
In 2010 we had a big snow and I had it in front of the house in case we lost power so I could watch Cam and Co. in the Natl Title Game. We did not lose power but I was taking no chances for that game.
…..Router and moden use very little juice. Not enough to notice on even a small generator.
…..Last Monday, Georgia Tech just TORE UP Tennessee’s defense. Jax State has held them to three points. But uh-oh, an ill-advised pick by the Wrambling Wreck!
AH – hadn’t thought about that — Can use generator to power router/modem – Glad you mentioned that!!
I have a neighbor with a son that works for Home Depot – he services my generator every year for free since I keep an eye on his mom. His dad, really good friend of mine, passed away about a month ago.
…..My router/modem will run about 8 hours on battery backup. My desktop computer maybe an hour, and my laptop maybe another 3 hours.
…..I have a propane stove, too. And we have a gas stove and hot water, too. What I’ll hate most will be disconnected from the internet for days…
…..I don’t get to enough games to justify buying a generator. It would sit unused for years, because I know I’d probably not be diligent about maintaining it. (I. E. keeping the oil changed, running it once a month, etc.)
We have the canned goods but I really dislike using those. That’s the reason I love my generator. We bought that sucker for tailgating – which gets used at all home games – but it is nice to have it in case we lose power during storms. I can power the fridges and, if necessary, the microwave, etc. So, we don’t use canned stuff very often. We also have a Coleman camp stove and, of course, there is always the grill that can be used in between the weather bands.
And, remember what Jax State almost did to us…
…..Win or lose, Jax State has impressed me, this half. They don’t have as many great players as Georgia Tech has, but this is a fundamentally sound football team.
…..And on cue, both Kentucky and Ole Miss score late in their halves, and pull closer.
…..As to hurricanes, I have a fridge full of food, which could be a good, or bad thing in a tropical storm. The power usually goes out, and I’d probably be better served with canned goods. Of course, lots of those are probably old. I use only a very few things out of cans, these days.
…..On a lighter note, not only are Kentucky and Ole Miss losing to FCS teams, but both are down by two scores. It’s Eastern Kentucky 13, Kentucky 2 near the half, and it is Tennessee Martin 16, Ole Miss 7, with about 4 minutes left in the half. Ouch…
Acid, it’s difficult not to obsess over the hurricane! We had original plans of staying overnight after the game but, instead, are driving back to ATL tonight just to be home. But, I have the Durango full of gas, the generator is filled up, and I have 5 additional gallons if needed.
Freezers and fridges are both full so I think I have done about all I can. I do need to bring pool and deck umbrellas in and stored.
This thing seemingly continues to trend westward WAY more than originally thought.
…..I discount all the wild weather stuff on Facebook. But the Alabama Weather Blog is now posting tracks of an Apalachicola/Panama City landfall.
…..I need to get a scoreboard page going, and stop obsessing about hurricane coverage.
…..Just from eyeballing, I think Kam Martin is about 10 pounds lighter than KJ, and not quite as developed as a pass blocker. He’s got better top-end speed, though. And last week, he showed a good downhill burst. Kam didn’t mess around in the backfield and get caught for a loss because of it.
…..Jax State is up 7-3 on Georgia Tech, too. 2nd quarter, 11 minutes left in the half.
My opinion, which is worth absolutely nothing, is that the whole “is he (Pettway) ready to go” is based on him not yet playing this season. I was at practice on Wednesday for a few minutes and he looked fine to me. KJ didn’t practice at all this past week and he won’t play tonight.
…..I’ve been out in the yard some this morning, but I’m back in, now. I saw a teaser on Auburn Undercover’s RSS feed to the tune of “is Pettway really ready to go?” Actually accessing the article reveals NOTHING about any injury, of course.
Stuff going around everywhere. I’ve heard that the whole rumor started on a bama message board and spread, I’ve heard that students have seen him on campus in a walking boot, I’ve heard he’s fine and 100%. Brandon Marcello said he has heard nothing other than him being ready to go. Jay G. Tate said that he is dealing with some “issue” but shouldn’t slow him much and that he will play. ESPN said he was listed as questionable for tonight, but those goobers were probably meaning KJ. Who knows.
I’ve heard nothing at all about Pettway and an ankle injury
Does anybody know what is going on with Pettway and this ankle injury?
Through the first qtr in both games KY losing to Eastern KY and Ole Miss losing to UT Martin. Yeehaw. Glamorous start to the day for the SEC.
@MyAuburn – Totally agree!
I had no idea Eddie Gran was UKs offensive coordinator. Have fun with that, Wildcats…
We haven’t really upset anyone is some time. Since almost all the pundits give us little or no chance this would be the time for the good tigers to kick the bad tigers butts.
I’m not Acid, but yes IMO, I think Kam could handle that.
Acid, do you think Martin can handle a KJish roll as a compliment to Pettway?
In Clemson — Will try to post what I can during the day. Atmosphere here is electric already.
…..And we are live! I’ll be checking in from time to time today, with some updates and scores. This evening, we’ll have our usual play by play of this titanic matchup. War Eagle, and good morning!
About Acid Reign:.....Still making noise after all these years! Lifetime slacker, dreamer, and miscreant with a knack for calculation. I was born in the United State of Texas, but have spent the majority of my years here amongst the shaded hills of the Tragic City, enjoying glorious smog-enhanced sunsets. In a troubled county, I live in a little slice of paradise between the ridges of Red and Shades Mountains. I've been an obsessive Auburn football follower since the Punt-Bama-Punt days, and have seen a lot of great football on the Plains. This lazy shirker finally learned the value of hard work and persistence from the fine folks in Auburn, and enjoys his return visits immensely! Hobbies include guitar-playing (or really just making loud and weird noise on any sort of instrument or object), cooking, computers, tennis, and old-school pen and paper RPGs. I love getting together with a good drink, great family, and friends..... (Acid Reign is Track ’Em Tigers’ Senior Editor). View Profile →
