A 16 Year Drought Ends for Men’s Basketball
A huge shot in the arm for the men’s basketball team came tonight as, for the first time since January of 2000, the Tigers were victors over the mighty Kentucky Wildcats. Kareem Canty and Tyler Harris plowed the way as Auburn beat the Wildcats 75-70 in a raucous Auburn arena atmosphere.
Few listened to Cinmeon Bowers on Friday when he told reporters “They’re (Kentucky) not really a good shooting team like that…” And with even more confidence he quickly said, “I believe our guards are better than their guards.”
Tyler Harris knew what most were thinking. “Nobody believed we could win this game.” When it was all over, there was no doubt about the things Bowers and Harris knew. Toomer’s Corner is rolled with paper even at this very moment to show everyone who doubted that a victory can come at any time.
The Tigers played harder and fought tougher than their opponents to snap an 18-game losing streak against Kentucky as a staple win for the Bruce Pearl era came into focus. “When you beat Kentucky, North Carolina, or Kansas or Duke in college basketball, it’s significant,” Coach Pearl said at the end of the game.
As for Cinmeon Bowers comments at the end of this game, “What I tell you?”
Case shut. War Eagle!
