Today’s Nostalgia Friday looks at the 1987 Auburn-Georgia Tech game which produced one of the most famous Auburn calls of all time. Jim Fyffe’s “Tillman! Tillman! Tillman! at the baseline of the end zone….” can still be heard around Auburn tailgates today.

Auburn was trailing Tech with about 24 ticks on the clock when quarterback Jeff Burger found Lawyer Tillman in the back of the end zone. Future NFL number one overall pick Aundray Bruce picked off two passes that day in leading fifth-ranked Auburn to a 20-10 win at Grant Field.

Darn, it looks like the YouTube videos were pulled.

I miss playing Tech frequently. Thankfully I was in school when we played them the last two times, so at least I was able to participate in the “Wreck Tech” parade. Too bad the on-field results stunk.

I think I remember a AU-GaTech series being scheduled for the late 20-teens. Does anyone know if that’s still going to happen?

I wasn’t able to travel to this game. My mother and I listened to it on the radio. I think she yelled louder, and jumped higher than I did when we heard Jim’s call.

I was driving back to Auburn from seeing Florida play Temple in Gainesville in my 1981 Dodge Colt listening to this game. I was somewhere just east of Columbus when we scored. Funny how you remember stuff like that…..

This was the last game in the mostly continuous series dating to 1892. Auburn had won the previous seven games, but Tech wanted badly to notch this last win. They played great defense all day, with Auburn’s only score coming on an early fumble recovery in the endzone by the late Kurt Crain.

Auburn’s defense was tough as well, and it was 10-7 Tech when Duke Donaldson fair caught the last Jacket punt at the Auburn 9 with 2:51 to play. Then Jeff Burger and Co.drove to the Tech 4, where Burger found Tillman for the gamewinner. Tech didn’t give up at that. A quarterback scramble got them almost to midfield, but the next pass was batted into the air, and Aundray Bruce snared it and rambled into the endzone as the clock expired for the final tally.

Great recap of that game Whiskey. You should write some stories here about some of your favorite games of the past. This one is definitely one of mine.

Sorry about the link issue. It was working fine when I posted it. I apologize. I’ve been away from the computer all weekend. I’ll do better next time.
