Gus went on his first recruiting visit today to current AU recruit in Huntsville, Alabama. Malzahn visited linebacker commit Cameron Toney. Needless to say the young man is stoked! So am I!

He talked to the young man about what his plans will be while at AU, here is what he had to say:

Malzahn had the opportunity to talk to Toney about the hire of Ellis Johnson and what to expect on the defensive side of the ball.

“He said he doesn’t want to stay 4-3, he wants multiple fronts and wants to change it up depending on who we’re playing and what we’re playing against,” said Toney. “Coach said we’re playing with a team that’s going to score points every game. Coach talked about Coach Johnson and how experienced he is.”

An important question Toney inquired about was the fate of the assistant coaches that he grew to love during the recruiting process.

“He’s still thinking about the offensive coordinator, that should happen the next two days, and then allow that coordinator to bring in their assistants. He wants great guys and really disciplined coaches,” said Toney.

Read this, it’s free, for an interesting perspective on what we are likely to see on defense this year. The guy is a coach who seems to know his stuff.

I was lukewarm on Ellis Johnson until I read this. Now I feel like he can be as innovative on defense as Gus is on offense.

Read that… and your right KFP… that is awesome.

Honestly… I was sick of Tampa 2…. and zone. Everytime I saw it I got to where I wanted to throw up.

As I stated in yesterday’s post. Johnson is a no nonsense disciplinarian. Here is what Gene Stallings said yesterday when interviewed about the Johnson hire at Auburn.
“Ellis is a very disciplined person,” Stallings said. “He won’t put up with anything that isn’t in the best interest of the university.”

Homerun for Malzahn, I guarantee it!

KB… I think you are right.

I think as long as we get the right people – AU will be markedly improved.
