If AU thinks that OSU strength of schedule is the reason OSU should not be in the title game consider this……. FSU strength of schedule is WORSE than OSU’s
The difference? FSU took care of business every week. Without question. But yeah, it’s totally easy to dominate when your schedule is s**t.
I don’t know who this author is, or for whom they are a fan. But when lowly Michigan fights you to a draw, and then loses by one point due to a questionable play call, I fail to see how Ohio State is a juggernaught.
I hate the whole BCS fashion show anyway. I don’t like the fact that preseason polls determine who gets to remain in the top echelon by mere inertia. If they don’t lose, they remain highly ranked, strength of schedule be damned. Meanwhile, a team like us or Mizzou, who were unranked before the season began, have to fight our way into the top 25 before we get any visibility.
As far as I’m concerned, a team should have to win its conference to be eligible for the National Championship Game. There should be a playoff bracket that includes each of the conference champs. Then, if the public demands it, those teams who did not win their conference but are still considered worthy might fill in some wildcard slots.
That’s the only way to make the National Championship Game mean anything.
Although I REALLY hope we go to the BCS game I think it is correct for OSU to go if they win this weekend. As we all know, its REALLY difficult to win all your games. Strength of schedule IS factored into the BCS standings. The big difference is that we lost a game….albeit at Death Valley, where many seasons go to die….by 14 points. Thats a big one to overcome.
I know we all want to point and jeer at OSU’s wins but lets be honest, we have 4 wins that could easily have been losses. MSU we win in the last minute. ATM was driving for the winning score when time expired. UGA and UA, well, you know.
BUT WE WON!!! WE BEAT THOSE TEAMS!!
So did OSU. It aint easy, and you should be rewarded for that accomplishment. Just ask Jason Campbell or Tubby.
Do we deserve to go? Sure, but what about Mizzou? OK state? Even Bama has a fairly reasonable argument. And if you’ve heard the talking national boneheads, they STILL think Bama is the best team in the country despite the fact they don’t have a placekicker that isn’t living under an alias in the witness protection program.
Now THATS crazy.
Wins and losses count. Personally, I’d rather have Sparty (or God help me, Duke!) assist us than weather the inevitable storm of protest of yet another snub of an undefeated team, even if it is an Urban Meyer coached Ohio State. It would be just as unfair for a 13-0 team as it was for 2004 Auburn under Tuberville.
We either get it by right as the best one loss team or we go to the Sugar Bowl as the conference champion. It wouldn’t be worth it as a gimme, especially if Ohio State were to then win the Rose Bowl and finishes undefeated the week prior IN THE SAME STADIUM.
We would lose more than we would gain in such a situation. There would always be an asterisk associated with our championship if we won, we’d lose every bit of any goodwill gained by beating UGA and Bama if we lost.
Agree with the Col… One loss (any conference) shouldn’t trump an undefeated AQ conference team no matter how weak the schedule. Let’s hope that Sparty helps us out.
On a side note, I head the talking heads talk about how the SEC is down this year because of Auburn and Mizzou’s turnarounds from last year. They say, “how can the SEC be that good this year if they let two teams who had abysmal 2012 seasons end up in the CG?” They went on to talk about Mizzou getting into the CG in just its second year.
I have to disagree with you. AU not going in 2004 due to three teams being undefeated from AQ conferences proves that the “undefeateds should always go” model is fundamentally flawed in that it allows for more than two teams to fit it’s criteria. It should be that the teams that have proven they are the best go (I would also add that being conference champ is a requirement for the current two team style, maybe not for a four team playoff though).
Again, the undefeated thing is complete crap, the 04 Auburn team did everything right and still got screwed by this system. OSU would have lost at at least 2-3 games on AU’s schedule, and AU would have been undefeated with theirs.
But first things first, beat Mizzou!
Concentrate on Mizzou.
Stay the course.
A thousand points of light………..
…..Yes, yes. Let’s work on Mizzou and the chips will fall where they may if we win. None of that can we control. We’re in the SEC Title Game! Let’s celebrate it!
We’re going to tell a group of young men, who just went 12-1 in a most difficult schedule against six ranked opponents, that they don’t have a chance to play for a national championship? I’m going to need help with that one.”
Being redundant, I know, but let’s concentrate on Mizzou and let this work out however it will. I will say that, shoukd tOSU lose, the SECCG winner should play in the BCSNCG. I dare speak for anyone else but I certainly had no thoughts back in August that this would be a discussion topic involving our Tigers.
