Fans have speculated for weeks that Auburn’s football team has quit on the coaching staff. Now it appears the University and its media partner have also thrown in the towel.
IMG Sports, the producer of the Auburn Football Review, notified affiliates this morning that it intends to cancel the program scheduled for the day following the Iron Bowl on Nov. 24.
In an email to WRBL Television in Columbus, Georgia, IMG executive producer Drew Walker writes, “We have decided not to run a 13th Auburn Football: Every Day show which would be the post Alabama episode. We felt it best to inform everyone now to give folks time to find a way to fill in that time slot. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Thanks.”
What the hell?
Granted, no one expects a pleasant outcome in Tuscaloosa over Thanksgiving Weekend, but what kind of message does this send to the players? This is as close to a surrender by an athletic department as you’ll likely ever see.
Asked to react to the cancellation at today’s press conference, Auburn coach Gene Chizik declined. “I don’t really have a reaction to it. I appreciate all they’ve done.” He confirmed that he was not involved in the decision to cancel the program.
The move will force Auburn Network affiliates to refund advertising dollars to those who’ve purchased ads for the program based on 13 shows.
Can things get any worse?
