Its time for all loyal Auburn fans to put their game faces on. The South’s Oldest Rivalry, will be renewed this Saturday on The Plains when the Auburn Tigers take on the Georgia Bulldogs.
The last time Georgia visited Jordan-Hare, Auburn was undefeated and appeared to be headed to the SEC Championship game. Mark Richt was on the hot seat, the Dawgs were on a five game losing streak, and were headed toward a losing season.
Oh what a difference two years can make, as the two old foes have reversed roles for their 116th meeting. Auburn is experiencing their worst season in years while Georgia is looking for a win to propel them into the SEC Championship game.
However, nothing is a gimee in this game. While the series has a history of a championship being on the line for at least one of the participants, it also has a history of the underdog scoring upsets.
Take for example the 1999 contest when the underdog Auburn Tigers came into the game having lost five of their previous six games, yet led 31-0 at halftime and went on to take a 38-21 victory.
Then there was the 100th meeting of the two foes in 1996. The two played in the first Southeastern Conference football game to go into overtime. A 5-6 Georgia team was down 28-7 at halftime, but came back to tie it up at 28-28 and then went on to win 56-49 in four overtimes.
Of course it seems like it will be an impossible task for this lowly Auburn Team to upset the number five Bulldogs. The Dawgs are riding high and only need to beat Auburn to win the SEC East Division Title.
Mean while the Tigers are living in the lowest ebb they have been through in more than 50 years. So can they pull off the upset? Sure they can.
Admittedly a victory may be improbable but its not impossible. After all this team battled Clemson and LSU down to the wire. I submit the Tigers have a lot to play for as well. No one wants to lose a game but when its a close rival, the desire to fight is even greater.
For most Auburn fans, nothing beats a victory over the Crimson Tide. But as I wrote in this space last November, the Auburn– Georgia game is the most important game of the year for me. Ever since my first game when I was nine years old, Auburn – Georgia has been the most important game on the schedule.
I had rather beat Georgia than Alabama. I appreciate the Iron Bowl Rivalry but I also appreciate the 120 year rivalry with our border cousins. And I have always respected Georgia for being the first SEC school to go home and home with Auburn. However, even though I respect them … I sure want to beat them Saturday.
If the Tigers can keep the mistakes to a minimum and connect on a few passes, I think Auburn has a chance to pull off the upset. Anyway, that’s the way I’m looking at it. I’ve got my game face on. How about you Tiger fan? If you haven’t yet, its time to, because …
Its Georgia week in Auburn!
