Can embattled Gene Chizik pull off the win today?
War Eagle, everybody! It’s gameday once again, and today I’m confident that we’ll cheer the Tigers to a win! In Week Ten, Auburn takes on the New Mexico State Aggies, and it’s an 11:30 AM Central time kickoff. For those who have Charter or Comcast cable TV, the game’s on CSS. For those elsewhere, try ESPN-3.
This game should be played on a dry field with a partly cloudy sky in Auburn, with temps holding throughout the game in the mid 70s. In other words, outstanding football weather! Look for a waning moon near the western horizon at kickoff.
Today marks the first start of true freshman quarterback Jonathan Wallace for the Tigers. In the past 50 years, Auburn’s had only two other true freshmen starters at that position, Gabe Gross in 1998, and Kodi Burns in 2007. It’s a tough gig, but we’re confident that Mr. Wallace will do well.
We’ll have our usual play by play up, and as always, feel free to join in. Regardless of the situation, it’s Auburn football, and we’ll be here cheering the team on! War Eagle! Beat the Aggies!

Personal Observations:
Auburn D is playing some soft schemes. Maybe we are far too worried about getting beat deep, that we’ll gamble on the short game not panning out for NMSU. NMSU, as with every other team we’ve faced can hit routes underneath coverage All Day Long. I also notice NMSU’s defense playing a bit more tight in coverage than ours. I’ve seen their secondary play very close to the linebackers and challenge Wallace to throw deep.
Wallace took some time but he’s settled in a bit more. His passing game hasn’t been an ‘on target’ go at it. His greatest success, as with most of our Offensive success seems to come from running the ball between the tackles. Emory Blake has double coverage and it’s rare a receiver has been given the opportunity for YAC yards due to errant throws or man coverage.
Lastly – The Odds makers must love watching the ‘dumpster fire’ that is Auburn Football right now. 22.5 point spread!? Really? The only time this year we’ve even scored more than 22.5 in a game was once, in overtime. That would also peg us to keep the other team from scoring if we were to even hit 22.5 points – which hasn’t happened all year. It just makes us look that much worse to those who don’t watch our games week in and week out. Surely our talent level is at a premium compared to what NMSU pulls in. Why are we this bad?
I sure do hope we can hold on and pull this one out. We don’t need another week of hitting new lows.
We’ve been playing soft schemes for 4 years. Ever since Chizik showed up.
Chizik would rather the secondary play way off and try to make a play on the ball. It is STUPID. That defense works in the NFL when you have experienced corners and safeties that know how to do that. We don’t.

It seems talent won out. I was worried about that at halftime and voiced it. The 7-0 lead at the half was disturbing, all things considered. Amazingly something sparked in the locker room at the half and we just wore them down as noted.
We have a tough one ahead next weekend. There was some talk on ESPN about us carrying this win momentum into the game vs. UGA and a possible upset bid. I’m not sold on that notion by any stretch, but we could very well pull an Ole Miss and keep UGA honest for a half. UGA is looking ahead and we ‘could’ show up with the team we fielded vs. LSU. Anything is possible.
