“(Nick Marshall) can throw a football farther than anyone I’ve ever seen in my life. He’s an unbelievable football player. I’d like to see how much better he’s gotten over the past couple of years.” Those words were spoken this summer by Aaron Murray, All-SEC quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Today we learned that Murray may get his wish as Auburn Coach Gus Malzahn announced Marshall will be the starter in Auburn’s opener in two weeks. As all Auburn fans know, Marshall has been locked in a battle with the 2012 ‘Mr Alabama Football,” Jeremy Johnson since the beginning of fall practice.
Many expected Malzahn and Offensive Coordinator Rhett Lashlee to pick Nick all along. But if that were the case they would have gone with Marshall last week and given the Juco transfer all the reps this week in preparation for the Tigers’ August 31 date with Washington State.
It has been evident that Malzahn was giving Johnson every chance to get the nod. For his part, Jeremy showed a lot of class after the announcement when he tweeted, “Nick Marshall deserves (it) and will do a lot for the Tigers this year!!! War Eagle!”
Marshall comes to the job as the Georgia State High School record holder for career touchdown passes. In addition, he put up big numbers at Garden City (Kansas) Community College last season, throwing for 19 total touchdowns and 3,142 yards while rushing for 1,095 yards and 18 TD’s in 11 games.
Gus Malzahn said, “We wanted to go with the guy that gives us the best opportunity to win football games and Nick is the guy.”
With the new QB having been given the keys to the offense and placed in the driver’s seat – the Tigers can now focus on getting ready for the Cougars.
