The unofficial start to the college football season gets underway this week in Birmingham with the start of SEC Media Days. There’s always drama somewhere during these outings. Whether it’s Phillip Fulmer avoiding a subpoena from a crazed Alabama fan or Steve Spurrier not voting Tim Tebow as first-team SEC quarterback, craziness always ensues.
This year’s circus will likely revolve around Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel who’s again making news after allegedly getting the boot this weekend from the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
A report on Deadspin.com says the Texas A&M quarterback had too much fun last Friday night.
“Johnny Manziel was sent home from the Manning Passing Academy on Saturday afternoon by Archie Manning himself,” reports the site.
“…Manziel showed up tardy Saturday afternoon after being out on the town Friday night. The Texas A&M star reportedly enjoyed himself a little too much Friday night and rolled back into the camp at Nicholls State University some time around noon Saturday before getting the boot.”
Manziel was photographed earlier in the evening with Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron, who’s also participating in the camp.
Clearly the sophomore is collapsing under the weight of the Heisman Trophy. Earlier this year, in a late night tweet, he posted, “Tonight is a reason I can’t wait to leave College Station..whenever that may be.”
I guess being idolized by an entire fan base is more than some can handle. Outside of Miss Utah, Manziel may be the biggest screw up of the year.
How it translates on the field remains to be seen. I’ll be the most shocked person in the world, if he comes close to matching last year’s performance.
Oh, and let’s not count on him making the trip to Birmingham on Wednesday. Call it a hunch…
While the Manziel circus plays out this week, Gus Malzahn will be quietly making his first Media Days appearance. On Wednesday, he’ll be joined by cornerback Chris Davis, defensive end Dee Ford and fullback Jay Prosch.
While those three names are not getting a lot of publicity now, they will be key to Auburn’s success this year. I can’t think of three better players to be chosen to speak on Auburn’s behalf…
Finally, the video above is from former Auburn student and country music singer Donica Knight. The self described Auburn fanatic, debuted the song, ‘Great to Be’, a couple of months back and it has been steadily gaining traction with the Auburn faithful. Check it out.
