C. J. Uzomah has been named to the Mackey Award Watch List. The award recognizes the nation’s top tight end. The Mackey Award Committee made the announcement today.

He was named as one of 37 tight ends on the preseason watch list. The announcement may have surprised some since Uzomah saw only limited playing time last year. However, former Tiger great Phillip Lutzenkirchen said he expected C.J. to really open some eyes in 2013. Apparently that has already begun to happen before the first snap.

Uzomah got his chance last year when he had to replace a injured Lutzenkirchen. He caught seven passes for 136 yards and a touchdown, showing some of the moves that his mentor Lutz had displayed over the previous three years.

The Mackey Award committee will narrow the list to eight semifinalists on Nov. 18 and announce three finalists on Nov. 25. The ultimate winner will be announced on the Home Depot College Football Awards show on Dec. 12.

Congrats to C.J. and War Eagle!

I really don’t see what he has done to put himself on the list. I like the kid and think he’s got a load of potential. Still, all potential means is that he hasn’t lived up to it yet. I’ll wait and see, but I’m not sure I agree with this kid being on the list.

……Uzomah was pretty dangerous last year, when they’d actually throw it to him. He averaged 19 yards per catch on the nation’s worst passing team. Of course, if he caught a big ball, you could count on Scot Loeffler to sit him down for the next 10 snaps or so.

I’m not saying he was useless and I agree at times he could be really dangerous. Still, that offense really doesn’t deserve anybody to be on any kind of watch list in my view. It was the most inept college offense I’ve ever seen and I just can’t justify Uzomah being on the nation’s top tight end watch list. I do think he’ll have a good season I just don’t think he’s earned it if that makes any sense.

Uzomah will have the chance to show just how good he can be. In Malzahn’s scheme he has the chance to really shine.
