Back in May, Auburn University President Jay Gogue
said one of his expectations of the Athletic Department was the,“enhancing of the game-day experience, on and off the field.” Well today Auburn AD, Jay Jacobs announced the addition of more than 2,000 free parking spaces along with the opening of new tailgate areas for the 2013 football season.
In an open letter to the Auburn Family, Jacobs said the action was taken as a result of fan response to a survey which, “Made it clear that tailgating, parking and the accessibility of campus rank high on (fans) list,” to improve game days on campus.
Those that read my column, know that I have voiced concern of the direction the school has been trending toward in recent years.
Since the addition of rental tents in front of both the stadium and the basketball arena, it has appeared that the (fundraising) Ole Miss ‘Grove’ type experience is what Auburn has been moving toward; while at the same time closing down traditional tailgaiting and parking areas.
Yet, the average fan already makes a sacrifice to support the Tigers. When you add the cost of the tickets and the athletic contribution, it cost a family of four close to $3,000 a year to sit in the cheap seats. And that doesn’t even cover gas, food, and the possible hotel accommodation.
Adding 2,000 new spaces is a step in the right direction and I commend any effort to make things easier on the fans to attend games and enjoy tailgaiting. However, there’s a lot more that can be done to make people feel more welcomed back on campus.
Jacobs said he is not through though and today’s announcement, “Is the first of several new actions I will take over the summer months to improve the AUAD, and especially the gameday experience for our fans.”
That’s good news because the unique atmosphere of Auburn Saturdays along with free tailgating has always been part of what makes football games on The Plains so special.
We applaud today’s announcement and we look forward to seeing what those, “new actions” will bring.
