They Are Still Our Tigers

6674860- Still Our Tigers

Should Auburn have switched offensive styles in 2012? Should Gene Chizik have tried to get Barrett Trotter to return? Why can’t Scott Loeffler develop a quarterback or more importantly call better plays?

Has a championship coaching staff forgot how to coach? Will Chizik be retained at season’s end? Will there be a top to bottom house cleaning in the athletic offices?

These are just some of the many questions swirling around the Auburn Football program today. Auburn fans are understandably frustrated, hurt, and in some cases down right angry.

I don’t pretend to know the answers to any of the questions. But I do know there is one thing that concerns me greatly. Lost in the maze of what has become Auburn’s titanic losing season, is the players.

Make no mistake, they are the ones that are hurting the most. No one wants to win more than they do.

Playing college football is tough enough. Winning games on Saturday is the only reward that most will ever get for all their hard work. The summer work outs, two a days, time in the weight room, and grinding practices … this is not where they wanted to be.

Its amazing to those outside of this region of the country, just how important College football is to the fabric of the South. Assuredly not every one in Dixie lives and dies with their team’s success.

But enough place serious importance on it that when their team is not doing well, their lives are disproportionably affected.

Yes we all recognize that there is more to life than college football. However, from Labor day to Jan. 1st, our actions belie our words.

Still what we need to keep in mind is, these players didn’t come to football tradition rich Auburn University for this kind of season.  This is not what they signed up for. This is not what they labored through so many hot summer days for.

They came to Auburn to have fun winning games and possibly be a part of something special … maybe even a championship season. Now, at least for this season, those dreams are gone.

But history proves  that Auburn will be back; probably not this year but certainly sooner than most are currently predicting. And a lot of these players will be part of that comeback.

Until that time Auburn fan … stay behind these players. If you are a ticket holder, show up every Saturday early and stay late. Support this team like they were 6-1 and not 1-6.

Do it because no one wants to win more than they do. Do it because they need it now more than ever. And do it because win or lose …

They are still our Tigers.

…..I’ll be there, and thanks so much for this post!

A championship coach didn’t forget how to coach. 2010 was a magical season with a magical team and stud QB.

That being said, I see no hope for a repeat championship, or an SEC championship, or a division championship, or an Iron Bowl victory with the current program, no matter who the coordinators are.

There needs to be a true house cleaning in Auburn, from the AD down. The culture must be changed radically.

I’ll be there early, encourage till I’m horse, and will not leave 1 second early. With many deaths around the team in the last few months the greatest love and encouragement is presence! Come support our Tigers we can make a difference and help them heal and win, and winning cures a lot of ills!

    War Eagle!

    Well said ATM

I’m driving 9+ hours (as I do for every game that I attend) to be there. I’ll stay until the last whistle. I’ve been preaching lately this exact sentiment that we need to stay the course and support our players. I may lose my mind if I hear one Boo Bird in the stands on Saturday. If you’re going to Boo, please do us all a favor and remove yourself from JHS-there is no place for it there. The players, coaches, administration and other fans know that noone is happy, but during a game isn’t the time for bourbon induced booing!
The players will need us on all on Saturday night. Everyone knows that magical things can happen when young men have the confidence of 87k+ behind them-defenses make plays they normally wouldn’t, uncatchable passes are caught, quarterbacks find a way to keep a play alive seconds longer, and backs break tackles and stay on their feet in ways not imagined. If that’s possible, maybe coaches can even learn to run to the wide side, or throw downfield to seldom used receivers, or leave a blocking fullback in the backfield on pass plays (I know this is a cheap shot, but I couldn’t resist).
JHS has been and can be a magical place where the unthinkable happens. I think we’re due for some of the unthinkable to go the right way this year. Let’s show the Aggies that even a down on their luck, beaten down Auburn team is still to be feared more than any Big 12 team they have faced. War Damn Eagle!

We will still be there – Tigers Unlimited donations, season tickets, Auburn Fund, Band, etc. are not being removed from our budget — And I agree with @Autgr91 – if you want to boo, then do it some damn where else. These kids are not to blame and do not deserve that disrespect. WDE!

Great post. In all that is going on in the AU football program, we tend to forget the boys in Orange and Blue. These guys need our support. WAR EAGLE!!

  8. Im4Auburn says:

Thanks for this post. I needed that and our players need to read articles like this. They need to know we are behind them.

I can’t be there Saturday. But I’m still behind the team. Good job ATM. Needed to be said.

I know many of you will remember Rob Pate, one of our former players. He is now an eye doctor (I think) in the birmingham area, but still finds time to write at the following blog http://eyesonauburn.blogspot.com.
While looking at it the other day I found a link where he wrote an article for rivals and I think every fan and player should read it and take it to heart. It really put things in perspective for me and is a little too long to cut and paste here, but very applicable to this story. Seriously, READ IT. Link below…

Hopefully fans attending the games realize that a lot of the difficult on the field is not due to lack of talent, aptitude or effort–it’s coaching. I will be ashamed if I hear BooBears during the game Saturday night! It might be a painful year, but it doesn’t take away my love for Auburn!

    War Eagle!

  15. Randyc37 Randyc37 says:

I will be at the game on Saturday to support the players. I really feel for them after this season. Perhaps I can give Loeffler the only 10 plays that we ran in high school that got us to the State palyoffs. I still remember him with the Detroit Lions. They were 0-16.

    WDE!

The best thing we can do for this team, and future teams, is assemble a competent athletic department and a competent coaching staff for the football team.

This is the best summation of our responsibilities as fans. The players are still out there trying, so they have fulfilled their extremely small responsibility to us. Let’s stay behind OUR Tigers!

  19. KoolBell KoolBell says:

Never ever boo any player, especially AU players. Not at the college level or below. NFL? That may be different, but not at AU!

I will see all of you at the game Saturday, and ATM, better save me some of that BBQ…just kidding, it will be 2
:00 or a little later before we get there.
I am bringing my good friend Gary, who was with me when AU intercepted all those passes against LSU.
One other note, I have never been to an Auburn game that Auburn lost, I do not expect that to change now!

    WAR EAGLE!
