Random Thoughts on the Auburn Tigers

Who said scheduling Buffalo was a bad idea? It looks pretty good right now… Auburn is one banged up team. Make sure you bring a copy of the depth chart Saturday to Jordan-Hare Stadium. Some clean uniforms will be getting dirty… Don’t be surprised to see quarterback Brandon Cox and tailback Kenny Irons scratched from Saturday’s game with Buffalo. Both are in need of rest. If they do play it will be brief…

Is it me or does it just seem easier to go to work when Auburn’s winning?…

Have you been keeping up with the Mike Shula saga? In case you missed it, Shula suspended linebacker Juwan Simpson for last Saturday’s cupcake game with Louisiana-Monroe. Simpson, who was arrested in May on charges of receiving stolen property, possessing marijuana and carrying a pistol, played in Alabama’s first two games of the year. Imagine Tommy Tuberville suspending Kevin Sears and Tray Blackmon for the Buffalo game only. Simpson commits three felonies (one later reduced) and he gets a one game suspension for the Louisiana-Monroe game. Even Alabama alumni that I speak with are sick of Shula’s antics. What has happened to that program? Did they really win a national championship in 1992?…

Don’t be surprised to see true freshman wide receiver Tim Hawthorne play this year. He continues to practice in the offensive rotation and I get the feeling that Tommy Tuberville is about ready to put him on the field… For my money, Kody Bliss is the best punter to ever wear orange and blue. And that’s saying a lot…

It concerns me when Auburn fans start worrying about the BCS. With Florida, Georgia and Alabama still on the schedule, that should be the least of our worries. And we’ll probably play either Florida or Georgia twice. That’s a tall task for any team. Let’s hope the players stay grounded. It can all go away in a week…

What has happened to Ed Orgeron at Ole Miss? That top 10 recruiting class may never have time to gel if he doesn’t start winning soon… This may be the most boring week of college football in years. When ESPN picks up Florida-Kentucky for its Saturday night broadcast, you know things are bad. Go ahead and cut the grass one last time…

I’m glad to see SEC commissioner Mike Slive talking tough about contract negotiations with CBS. It’s ridiculous that the network waits until the third week of the season before it broadcasts its first game. Does anyone really watch the U.S. Open?… I’m looking forward to the SEC starting its own television network. Mixed in with a lot of women’s volleyball will be some good football coverage – you take the good with the bad…

And finally, isn’t it great that no one ever talks about Terry Bowden anymore?…
