New Auburn running back Cameron Artis-Payne’s singing just took on increased significance tonight.
If there wasn’t enough drama surrounding Auburn’s final weekend before next Wednesday’s National Signing Day … Aaron Brenner of the Colunbus, Ga. Ledger Enquirer is reporting tonight that, “Sophomore running back Mike Blakely is no longer with the Auburn football team and no longer enrolled in school. “ Reportedly Auburn Associate Athletic Director Kirk Sampson made the announcement earlier this evening.
The Tigers were already looking to sign two running backs in the 2013 class. This now means that Auburn has junior (1,000 yd. rusher) Tre Mason, junior Corey Grant, and junior college signee (and No.1 Juco RB in the nation) Cameron Artis-Payne as the only three running backs on the team. Hopefully the development will encourage some of the running backs the Tigers are recruiting to go ahead and pull the trigger.
The most prominent candidates are Johnathan Ford from New Hope, Ala. who visited Auburn last weekend; Tarean Folston of Cocoa, FLa. who visited the previous weekend; and Cornelius Elder from Ensworth High in Nashville who is presently on campus visiting the Tigers today and Thursday.
While the three RB’s that are on the team are outstanding players, it is critical that Auburn add depth to the stable. You never know when injuries can cause you to have to play your fourth string running back as in the 2002 Iron Bowl; when freshman Tre Smith had to step in for the injured Ronnie Brown and Cadilac Williams.
