Will Auburn keep Carl Lawson in the fold?
After playing catch up since being hired on December 4, Auburn Coach Gus Malzahn and his staff are driving toward closing strong in the final weekend of the 2013 recruiting season.
Not long after the coaching changes were announced, the Tigers fell out of the top 20. But due to week’s of hard work, the current class is ranked at No.18. by 247 Sports, No.15 by ESPN, and No.13 by Rivals. And now Auburn has an excellent chance of finishing in the top 10.
Where the Tigers wind up will depend on this final weekend. Make no mistake the next seven days will be huge as Auburn will be hosting some of the most highly rated recruits in the country.
The Tigers currently have 19 players committed for their 2013 class. But some are on shaky ground as Auburn’s competitors pushed hard after the coaching change to flip them. The first priority is to shore up those who are a little unsettled and then get new ones to commit.
The final weekend for hosting recruits actually starts a couple days early on The Plains as the Tigers host 5-star running back …
Cornelius Elder from Nashville, Tenn., today and tomorrow before he finishes up at Ga. Tech Saturday and Sunday. A big thing for Elder will be the opportunity to play both football and basketball. If he commits to Auburn, its believed he will be given the opportunity to play both.
Following Elder’s visit will be a list of some of the top players in the country. As many as 12 recruits may be on hand during the final weekend before recruits sign their National Letter of Intent a week from today.
Headlining the visitors will be the nation’s No. 1 weak side defensive end, Carl Lawson from Alpharetta, Ga., the No. 1 inside linebacker, Reuben Foster from Auburn High, the nation’s No. 2 Defensive Tackle, Montravius Adams from Dooly County, Ga., 24/7 Sports No. 3 strong side defensive end, Elijah Daniel from Avon, Ind., and five star Tashawn Bower from Somerville, NJ who is ranked by Rivals as the No.14 strong side Defensive End.
Bower has already taken his official to Auburn and will have to pay for his trip out of his pocket – a move which has to make you feel good about his commitment.
Lawson and Foster have been under tremendous pressure from rivals to switch commitments. While Lawson has been committed to the Tigers since March, 2012, he has been heavily recruited by Clemson and Tennessee. Georgia and Alabama are in hot pursuit of Foster who decommitted from the Tigers after Gene Chizik was fired.
Some analylist expect Foster to be a Tiger while others feel like he is leaning toward Tuscaloosa. As for Carl Lawson, JC Shurbett of 24/7 Sports tweeted yesterday that he believes. “Lawson is moving from Clemson to Auburn.”
Elijah Daniel committed to Ole Miss on Jan. 20. However, new Auburn Recruiting Coordinator Rodney Garner has had a relationship with Daniel and his family for several years and may have a chance to flip the five star Defensive End.
No one can seem to get a handle where Montravius Adams maybe leaning as he is being pursued by Auburn, Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and LSU. At least the Tigers are in a position to have the final visit by the coveted player.
Some of the other possible visitors include: Pratville’s Austin Golson, a four star recruit and the No.10 OT in the country. Golson grew up a Tiger fan but is currently leaning toward Ole Miss.
Also visiting will be four star Fla. commit WR Marqui Hawkins from Carver of Columbus, GA.; FSU commit Ro’Derick Hoskins a four star OLB from Orlando; Toby Johnson, a four star Juco DT from Hutchinson, Kansas; and four star OT Devondre Seymour from Suwanee, GA.
The weekend is definitely going to be huge for the Orange and Blue. While we don’t know how the final Auburn class will be ranked, Tiger fans have to feel good this morning about Auburn’s chances.
One things for certain … when Gus Malzahn was announced as the Tigers new Head Coach back in December, no one expected him to be able to play catch up and have this kind of impact in such a short period of time. The next seven days will be interesting.
