Auburn Basketball Gets Real

When Auburn Arena was constructed, school officials wanted to get the students closer to the action and more involved in the games. Mission accomplished. Saturday night’s heart breaking loss to Ole Miss has been overshadowed by what happened immediately following the game away from the court.

After a raucous back-and-fourth contest that had the arena rocking all-night, Ole Miss star Marshall Henderson headed to the student section to rub it in following the Rebel’s 63-61 win over Auburn.

What happened next is still up for debate. Many in attendance swear Henderson flipped off the Auburn students, even provoking one Auburn official to say so over Twitter. Video is inclusive, but there’s no question, Auburn students returned the favor.

Provoking them like he did, it’s a wonder Henderson got out of there with all his body parts. The rage in the eyes of the students is great. What’s even better is watching the older gentleman in the video react. Good stuff.

While it’s certainly not good to condone this behavior, it’s comforting to see Auburn students care so much about basketball.

If Auburn ever becomes consistently competitive, Auburn Arena is going to be one fun place to spend Saturday night…

Is there a bigger turd in all of college football than Nebraska’s Bo Pelini? Known for making a complete ass of himself on the sidelines during games, apparently he carries these traits into everyday life.

When Florida prep wide receiver Dominic Walker phoned Pelini Friday to tell him he was switching his commitment to Auburn, the Nebraska coach reacted like a 14 year-old child.

“They were [mad],” Walker told the Orlando Sentinel. “They were very mad. But I thought I had to call them like a real man should,” Walker said. “But yeah, they were mad. Coach Pelini said, ‘Best of luck, you’re going to need it.’”

A class act.

The Nebraska staff is no better. When Walker reached out to Cornhusker wide receivers coach Rich Fisher, the reaction was just as juvenile.

“Coach Fisher said, ‘I can’t believe you,’ ” Walker said. “It was really awkward.”

I wonder what Pelini’s reaction was back in December, when he got Walker to flip from Vanderbilt to Nebraska? Remember when that program used to be the gold standard in college football? Not anymore…

If you are still trying to decide who to pull for in Sunday’s Super Bowl, then may I suggest to you the San Francisco 49’ers. They have the only Auburn starter in the game with Carlos Rogers starting at cornerback.

Baltimore on the other hand, has two Alabama starters in the lineup with Terence Cody and Courtney Upshaw. They also have former Auburn player Josh Bynes as a reserve. Overall, the Ravens have 10 SEC players on its roster and the 49’ers have nine.

Good luck Carlos.

The students being that fired up is good. The older gentleman standing up was classic and I think the jerk knew he better back off or else! I hate to admit it, but I don’t think I would’ve handled it as well as the gentleman did.

  2. Malakai Malakai says:

God I know I wouldn’t have handled that as well as the older gentleman or even the students I’m ashamed to say. Pull that kind of BS in Jordan-Hare while I’m within arm reach and I’ll probably be doing 2-10.

2012 was bad, REALLY bad. I know it’s know excuse, but this AU fan’s nerves are frayed. I haven’t even been to the new arena, not even that much of a basketball fan, but seeing the .gif made my face turn red.

I think we as AU fans need to take a deep breath before saying or doing anything that will bring further shame on our beloved Auburn Tigers.

There’s always been a decent core of student support for basketball at Auburn. With the new arena, though, the administration has done a good job of making it much more of a fun atmosphere. Even though we lost Saturday, we took a stronger team to the wire and easily could have won. Hopefully this game will prove to be a spark and maybe the on-court performance will start to consistently match the support from the students.

We sat in the student section during the holidays when they had $5 seats. I will say it was a LOT OF FUN!! But be prepared to stand the WHOLE game as they don’t rest. ;) You can really get into the game down there much more than higher up. It belongs to the students. It’s a good thing that the cameras are pointed that way as the “old fogey” section (scholarship) is as usually full and rowdy. Don’t know why they don’t give that to the students and put them higher up since they aren’t going to participate! It’s also great to see Mahlzan supporting the bball team! Did Chiz hang out that much?

  5. Bee says:

As a grad, I cringe at the sight of that video. Common guys, we are better than that. Yeah he may have flipped of the students first but, that is not shown. Ugh e

  6. Tiger on the mountain Tiger on the mountain says:

Pelini is a total clown. We see and hear a lot of Pelini and the Cornhuskers in my neck of the woods. For the record, they are not as obnoxious as bammers; however, the Huskers are obnoxious enough to inspire many of us to pull against them…….

I don’t know what to think about Auburn basketball, except it seems like some passion is seeping in–good. It’s about time!

    War Eagle and Go 49ers!!!

I lived in Omaha for several years recently. A large number of Husker fans don’t care for Pelini and his classless attitude. The fact that he can’t and won’t win like Tom Osborne doesn’t help. Osborne will not air out his differences with the Nebraska staff through the media but the fact that Pelini has seemingly become even more brazen leads me to believe that Osborne has not and will not address the problem.

In other news….Don’t look now but AU is up to #13 in the Rivals recruiting rankings. A top 10 class would be great, especially with an entirely new staff.

    • Third Generation Tiger Third Generation Tiger says:

We need to bring in Carl Lawson and Ruben Foster. Without them our stock drops and our defensive rebuilding effort is set back somewhat. I’m not a big believer in a “win the press conference” mentality, but in the real world we do have to win them occassionally.

  8. KoolBell KoolBell says:

Won’t watch much of the Super Bowl. I just don’t care right now. All my focus is on the recruiting “WE” are doing.
On that note, I am really looking forward to NSD, and the double posts of TET and ATB on the days happenings.

I love to see the enthusiasm for AU basketball, and by today’s standards, the flipping finger is mild. It is still not acceptable in my book, and should never be used. Once it’s captured on film, you will forever be seen as “that” guy.

Never liked Nebraska, never liked Tom Osborne, and could care less what any coaches reaction is to a kid who changes his mind. This shows me Pellini is classless.

    WAR EAGLE!

  9. bornatiger says:

still cautious but excited about recruiting class I used to like palini but l gess the stress is to much he should come to the sec lol I currently live in Oklahoma so it is hard to watch b-ball thou I love it cant waitfor football already wde

  10. Col.Angus Col.Angus says:

I LOVE THAT HENDERSON KID. And before you flame me, just ask yourself this….When is the last time Basketball and more to a point Ole Miss vs Auburn Basketball, got anybodys blood flowing?? Hey, sports are about emotion and intensity and there was a lot of that in that game, especially at the end. What you DON’T heare about in this story is that our boy Shaq blocked a layup on a breakawy moments before and on the ensuing inbound pass pretty much threw Henderson to the floor. INTENSITY….PASSION!! Auburn basketball needs more of that! Henderson may be a jerk but I like that he had the guts to go to the student section and get into it. Stupid? Yes, but funny. Hey, I’m impressed that he REALLY wants to win AT AUBURN! I mean, its not like we’re Kentucky!!
When I was in school my friends and I would go out and heckle the opposing outfielders at Hitchcock Field and the players would actually talk back and we would get into it. After the games most of them would come over and say they had a great time and wished it happened more often. So have a sense of humor and let the kids get excited.

Bo Pelini and Nebraska? What does it say about you and your program when you get bent out of shape over losing a 3-star player? Hurting for talent Bo? Couldn’t be because you act like an ass when a kid dissappoints you, could it? Walker demonstrated way more class and maturity, by calling Pelini and his staff to let them know personally. Gutsy move by the kid, color me impressed.

Super Bowl? Meh. I live up in DC now and my son wants a Ray Lewis jersery for the game. I told him, I know its snowing, BUT IT AINT THAT COLD!

    • sparkey sparkey says:

That kid is not your average three star Colonel. He’s been overlooked because of his teammate in high school that we also got to flip to us.

We need Carl Lawson and Reuben Foster. We need at least two five star top tier talent guys coming to Auburn. We need the momentum in recruiting to carry us to a top three recruiting class every year. I know how you guys feel on the whole stars and recruiting aspect of things, but in reality, you need at least some of those big named recruits to head your way. You will not win a championship without getting at least a few of the top rated players in the country.

      • Col.Angus Col.Angus says:

We DEFINITELY need Foster AND Lawson AND Adams AND Bower AND Mackensie AND Connor AND AND AND. We need a lot talent especially at LB and on the defense, but most importantly we need Johnson to re-instill toughness to the defense. Walker could be a 1Star and I’d like to have him on my team, he shows a lot of maturity and personal responsibility that this team needs. That being said, I can’t imagine acting like an ass to the kid if I was a coach. 3*, 4* or 5*, that kind of behavior doesn’t speak well for you when you are in charge of young men…and that gets around too.

    • audude audude says:

Well put Col. Well put. Don’t know that I would buy my son a R. Lewis jersey though.
