As promised, Gus Malzahn has completed his coaching staff by his self imposed deadline with the hiring of yet another top recruiter and outstanding coach. Tim Horton, former Arkansas Recruiting Coordinator and running backs coach was named by Malzahn today as the tight ends coach at Auburn
Horton was recognized by Rivals.com and ESPN.com as one of the nation’s top recruiters at Arkansas and was one of just two coaches in the nation, to coach four different 1,000-yard rushers from 2007-10.
The All-Conference Split End for Arkansas returned to coach at his alma mater in 2007. During his six years in Fayetteville, he coached two All-SEC backs (Dennis Johnson and Knile Davis) and two All-Americans (Darren McFadden and Felix Jones).
Horton’s first class as Arkansas’ recruiting coordinator (2008) was highlighted by wide receivers Joe Adams, Jarius Wright and Greg Childs, all of whom were chosen in the 2012 NFL Draft. With their selections, Arkansas tied an NFL draft record with three receivers picked in the same draft.
Coach Horton was part of a Razorback offense that was near the top of the SEC almost every year. The 2011 Hogs led the SEC in total offense and had the best scoring offense (37 ppg) the same year.
In his 23 year coaching career, he has coached at Appalachian State, Kansas State, Air Force, and Arkansas. He coached wide receivers and tight ends at Appalachian state and the Mountaineers became the first Division I North Carolina school to go undefeated during his tenure. Prior to coming to Arkansas, Horton was the Offensive Coordinator and Wide Receiver’s Coach at Air Force from 1999-2005.
Horton said he is thrilled to be joining the Auburn family, and added, “It is an honor and privilege to work at Auburn University with Coach Malzahn and the tremendous group of people and coaches that he’s assembled,”
Coach Malzahn said, “Tim is a true professional and an outstanding coach and recruiter, who deserves a lot of credit for Arkansas’ success while he was there. (He) is a man of character who will be a great compliment to our staff and a tremendous representative of the entire Auburn family.”
This has to be one of the best staffs ever assembled by a head coach on The Plains. If this group can gel together, I believe it’s a safe bet that Malzahn and crew will have the Tigers back sooner than anyone expected.
It was evident to everyone at the end of the 2012 season that a change in culture had to be made. By taking the difficult but necessary house cleaning step when he took over and by putting together a staff of experienced coaches who are experts both at recruiting and developing players, Malzahn has already shown that he means to do just that.
While it is naive to expect immediate success over night … for the first time in months, Auburn people have to be filled with hope.
