Rodney Garner

Sources close to the Auburn coaching search are saying that former Auburn great Rodney Garner may be coming back home to coach at his alma mater.

Known as one of the best recruiters in college football, he is also one of the most widely respected Assistant coaches in the SEC. He presently is the Assistant Head Coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Georgia where he has worked for the past 15 years primarily responsible for the defensive line.

Several times in the past decade various schools have tried unsuccessfully to lure him away from Athens. It is appearing tonight that he may be on his way back to The Plains. If in fact, Garner does get on board with Gus Malzahn’s new staff, it will be a major hire for the new Auburn Head Coach. Stay tuned …

UPDATE: It has been confirmed that Coach Garner has been hired as the fifth coach to join Gus Malzahn’s staff at Auburn.

Unbelievable. This staff has a hellacious ability to recruit. I mean, basically we cashed in Trooper Taylor… and got Johnson, Harbinson, and Garner. And that is just on the Defense.

Q: How in the hell did we lure him away from UGA?

Regardless, I want to see the talent start rolling in.

Hey – Reuben Foster…. you better come home now. Quit BS’ing yourself… you know where you want to be. And it ain’t with Trooper Taylor.

Bottom line in recruiting is gobbling up all the local talent you can. I’ll admit I was taken in with Chizik and Troopers attempt to expand nationwide, but in the end most of those guys don’t seem to want to apply themselves. It may be in part, they don’t know or understand the history of Auburn and its rivalries. It doesn’t mean anything to them. With local talent, from Alabama, Ga, Fla, Miss, and Fla, those kids understand what SEC football and the rivalries mean. They know the kids at the other schools, they get to play for/against their home state team(s)….in other words, passion, motivation….PRIDE!! That was something that was GROSSLY lacking last year…F’ng PRIDE!
You also always have to question a kids motivation to going to a school so far from home. At a certain point it gets a little fishy. If there isn’t a connection, why are you there?
That Garner is an Alum, a former coach, knows the South, has ALLL the connections you would ever want and the reputation of getting kids to the League, is a 10 Fold improvement over Trooper who’s shenanigans were always courting the attention of the NCAA. I couldn’t be happier that Rodney is coming home. My ONLY reservation is that over the last 10 years UGA has arguably had the best talent in the country on a year-in-year-out basis. Monster linemen, killer LB’s and amazing DB’s…..and they routinely underperformed. Most of their talent shone at the next level….not at UGA. They were never as poor as our defense has been the past 4 years but it has driven my UGA friends nuts at times. I know I’m painting with a broad brush but it is a concern.

Bottom line though, MEGALITHIC improvement over Pelton and Trooper. YEA!!!

I too am thrilled to pick up Garner. As far as linemen go, I’d say UGA’s linemen have looked pretty solid this season. I also am not sure that Garner has had a capable defensive coordinator alongside of him very much like Ellis Johnson. I have a feeling that Garner may have been given a suggestion he’ll be a top candidate for DC when Ellis Johnson retires. This is indeed an excellent group of recruiters on defense.

…..Garner had Van Gorder early on at UGA for his coordinator, then Martinez, and finally Grantham. Grantham and VanGorder did pretty well. Martinez did not.

I am interested to see how the Gus Bus plans to fit Garner and Rocker together as Acid Reign mentioned in yesterday’s Early Morning Rambling Rumbles post. I’d love to see it happen though.

    From oanow.com –

“I was talking to a good friend of mine, and I said, ‘You know what, I pull for Auburn 364 days a year. It’s just that one day that we play them, that’s the only time I don’t pull for Auburn,’” Garner said. “He’s like, ‘No, Coach G, to be honest about this you pull for Auburn 364 days and 20 hours. It’s just the four hours you’re playing them that you’re not.’ And I think you’re right. That’s true.

“That’s one thing that I will say -– I’m an Auburn man.”

    Welcome home, Coach G.

It is not going to happen. Rocker is going to stay in the NFL. I’d love to see Rocker come home to Auburn too believe me. Unfortunately, he just does not like the recruiting aspect of college.
