Auburn Soccer Season Begins Tonight

By on August 17th, 2012 in Other Sports Comments Off

The SEC Champion Auburn Tigers Soccer Team, open their season tonight at home against Georgia State University. The Tigers finished the season last year as the SEC Tournament Champions.

The Tigers scored 50 goals in 24 matches and gave up only 31 scores to finish with a 15-7-2 record. Fourteen year veteran Head Coach Karen Hoppa is hoping to lead Auburn to its 11th overall NCAA Tournament appearance in 2012-2013.

Auburn is fortunate to have goal keeper Amy Howard returning. The senior had eight shutouts in the 2011-2012 season with 1.33 GAA and 64 saves.

Offensively the Tigers will be paced by leading scorer senior, Ana Cate (nine goals, six assists) and last year’s All-SEC Freshman Tatiana Coleman (seven goals, eight assists).

Just like a lot of sports teams at Auburn, the Tigers have several players on the roster from Georgia. Some of the Tigers grew up playing against some of the GSU players. Coach Hoppa said because of that she, “anticipates that it will be exciting and a rivalry game.”

If you’re in the Auburn area, come out to the Auburn Soccer Complex tonight at 7 p.m. to support the Tigers. If you can’t make this match, then you’ll have another chance Sunday as Auburn host High Point in a 2pm. game.

Go Tigers!

EDITOR’s UPDATE: Auburn’s Mary Coffed scored the 12th goal of her career to give the Tigers a season opening win over the Georgia State Eagles 1-0. The  Tigers took 28 shots before the senior forward made the game winner at the 78th minute of the game.
